THIS WILL SAVE ALL STAR SATURDAY, LETS MAKE THIS HAPPEN

We all know how bad the All Star dunk contest has become. Props are not the answers. Teammates throwing lobs is not the answer. Format changes don't help either. We need stars but they wont participate. Sooooo

Its time we put the dunk contest to bed for a while and try to debut this new event....Allstar 1 on 1 Challenge!

Here is what Im thinking. We take the top 8 all star vote getting players, and randomly choose who they get to play 1 on 1 with in the first round. The winner will then move to a semi final round then to the final round.

Its 1 on 1 to 11 pts, by ones and twos and take backs behind the 3pt line

So lets think of who might participate in this in the fictional event if its based on top vote getters:
Lebron, Durant, Chris Paul, Dwight Howard, Carmelo, Love, George...you get the idea, the top 8 vote getters.

They are then randomly matched up for the first round and you could get fantastic matchups like Lebron vs Durant, Carmelo vs George or Kevin Love vs Dwight Howard, or even a wild match up like Chris Paul vs Dwight (speed vs power). It would be awesome to see how these would play out. Just straight up, whos the better baller > ONE ON ONE! <

Who wouldn't want to see this instead of the skills challenge or the shooting starts event. This would put the NBAs brightest stars on stage proving that the are indeed the best baller in the league. I would even order a pay per view to see these guys do this!!

And for the technical part of this setup. I know that the dunk and 3 pt shootout are voluntary, but this 1 on 1 game must be a required event that is agreed to once the players sign their first NBA contract. The should be required to participate for 3 years during all star weekend. After the 3 years has been fulfilled then they are exempt unless they they wanted to defend their title, then it would be totally voluntary on their part. If not, the next highest vote getters would be selected in to play that game

And no, this wouldn't take a lot of energy from the players. Even if the player goes all the way to the finals its still only 3 games to 11 pts. Hell give them an extra day off to recoup before the regular season picks back up

I on 1 will bring out these athletes competitive fire because they don't want to get showed up. They would pull out every move from their arsenal to get it done and not lose pride. I cant think of an event that would have this much star power, letting them do what they do best, mano y mano!!

I really want to see this happen in my lifetime. Anybody else with me? How can we petition to make this happen!!!

As cool as this would be, if the superstars won't even compete in the dunk contest, what makes you think they'd do something like this?

EDIT: Just saw the part where you said it would be mandatory in their contracts. Player's association would never let that fly.

If PG, Wall, and Lillard type guys do the dunk contest, I'd love to see them in a 1v1 contest. It doesn't have to be the top guys in the NBA, just young athletic players who can ball. Do you really wanna see Dwight 1v1 someone? Lol

A noble thought, but respectfully, I believe this to be nothing more than a pipe dream. As mentioned, the player's association would likely never agree to their players being potentially forced into an exhibition all-star event. Beyond that, stars likely find little interest in putting themselves out there in such a situation. And given how hard they push themselves in the skills competition (they don't), I'd have a hard time seeing a 1 on 1 contest turning out any way we envision it.

It used to exist, and it wasn't as incredible, legendary, and definitive as we wished:

That said, I fully support bringing back the duffel bag full of prize money.

Wow I had no idea that it used to be a real event. Man that arena was nearly empty....

And yeah, I want to see Howard play one on one.... and get his butt beat, especially by a smaller player. Id love that

As underwhelming as that video is, its still a treat when two players start going at each other. Todays players are so much more explosive and have such better handles I don't think it would be nearly as boring as it was in that video.

Did nobody else get a little excited when Hardaway jr. and Waiters started going at one on one during Friday nights event?? You rarely get to see players go street ball with their handles during a real nba game. This would give us a chance to see what they can do.

I understand about the players association not going for it, but for the good of the game it should be implemented in some form. It would be sooo cool to see. Even during the allstar game on sunday, by the time the 4th quarter comes the players start actually trying to win. They do have pride. Nobody that good wants to be beat.

I guess dreams like this are what video games are for
