Re: NHL 14 BAGM: The Story of Mario Lemieux and the Seattle Snipers

Today is a major day in the National Hockey League. A day that is rare in sports, and is excellent entertainment for all of those who are not involved. Today one expansion team, the Seattle Snipers, will have its choice of a set of players that have been made available by each team throughout the league. Some major names are on this list, however limitations exist for Seattle. They are not able to pick up the best 23 players they can, they will need to be strategic, while teams like Colorado, Winnipeg and Minnesota hope not to lose their best prospect.

Let’s have a look at the rules in place today.

Rules:

13 forwards will be chosen (4 centre, 4 left wing, 4 right wing, 1 extra)

7 defensemen will be chosen (3 RD, 3 LD, 1 extra)

3 goaltenders will be chosen

Inherent farm team of coyotes

Players on coyote’s roster will be dropped into free agency, However I am not allowed to sign these players.

MARIO LEMIEUX is first pick in the expansion draft

WAYNE GRETZKY will also be added to this dynasty. He will be placed on a team drawn at random.

MAX one player chosen from each team

THREE 4 ½ - 5 star players allowed

TWO 4 star players allowed

A GOALIE may not be chosen unless his overall is 77 or LESS

1 PROSPECT (Player not currently on NHL Roster) may be chosen at any
position, as long as the player falls under previously stated rules.

Using current roster update:

FOUR forwards with the lowest overall will be available from each team

ONE defensemen with the lowest overall will be available from each team

ONE goalie with the lowest overall will be available from each team

ALL Prospects are available. (As you can imagine, I have someone in mind)

PLAYERS AVAILABLE:

Note: will only indicate stars if 4 or higher

As we all know the player considered to be the next big thing, Mario Lemieux will be the first player chosen by the Seattle Snipers. Let’s have a look at all the players available today.

Re: NHL 14 BAGM: The Story of Mario Lemieux and the Seattle Snipers

Expansion Draft Results

There are many players available to Seattle from that list. Luckily for seven teams, they will not lose one single player in this draft. Also there are several teams that do not have any high value players at risk. But as you can see there is some major talent out there. It’s up to the Seattle Sniper’s first time GM to put this team together. He owns the stage today until all 23 players have been chosen, here he comes now to make the first selection.

1: Centre Mario Lemieux 97 overall 5 stars
2: Centre Nathan Mackinnon 79 overall 4 ½ stars
3: Left Wing Chris Kreider 77 overall 4 stars
4: Right Wing Valeri Nichushkin 77 overall 4 stars
5: Goaltender John Gibson (Prospect) 75 overall 4 ½ stars
6: Defensemen Nikita Zadorov 63 overall 3 ½ stars
7: Left Wing Frazer Mclaren 73 overall 3 stars
8. Right Wing Tom Wilson 70 overall 3 ½ stars
9. Defensemen Jake Muzzin 80 overall 3 ½ stars
10. Goaltender Marek Mazanec 67 overall 2 ½ stars
11. Defensemen Adam Pardy 75 overall 3 ½ stars
12. Defensemen Justin Braun 81 overall 3 ½ stars
13. Right Wing Eric Condra 79 overall 3 ½ stars
14. Left Wing Mattias Tedenby 74 overall 3 ½ stars
15. Centre Zenon Konopka 73 overall 3 stars
16. Right Wing Jimmy Hayes 75 overall 3 ½ stars
17. Defensemen Anton Belov 78 overall 3 stars
18. Defensemen Sheldon Brookbank 74 overall 2 ½ stars
19. Centre Greg Campbell 78 overall 3 stars
20. Left Wing Tom Sestito 73 overall 3 stars
21. Goaltender Jonas Gustavsson 75 overall 3 ½ stars
22. Right Wing George Parros 73 overall 3 stars
23. Defensemen Robert Bortuzzo 73 overall 3 stars

And there you have it, the Seattle Snipers are formed. Some interesting choices made by Patrick White today. As the talent level is low outside of the first few selections, it seems Seattle will go with a big team that can hit and fight. Lemieux and Mackinnon will be expected to lead the way offensively for this new team.

On D, there are no big stand outs, White has previously mention his desired to land a top defensemen through trade as he was aware of the lack of talent that would be available in this draft. With not a whole lot of players with significant value, let’s see how he goes about acquiring a major asset in the coming weeks and months.

In net, Seattle chose to use their one prospect pick on John Gibson. An excellent choice for the future. However Gibson will need some time, possibly years to develop. When asked about Gibson, White had this to say; "We were restricted to the level of talent we could draft for goaltenders, I believe with Gibson we have potentially the best goalie prospect in the game today. This whole team will have growing pains, Gibson will have plenty of his own, but he will be given every opportunity to play.

Re: NHL 14 BAGM: The Story of Mario Lemieux and the Seattle Snipers

So, before I get right into this, I like to explain a few things. First this idea just came to be out of the blue, I was thinking about posting here again, some of you may remember my leafs dynasty from a couple years ago, and seeing how I will have some extra time the next few months, I decided I will. I have already done a leaf’s dynasty on my own, so I was trying to think of a new team to play with. However I find I can never get attached to a new team because there are only a few players I care about. So the idea came to me of picking my own team, and doing it as an “Expansion” team, makes it a challenge. Obviously I had to replace the coyotes to do this, so it’s not really an expansion team, however I hope you guys can still get behind the new idea. Also I chose to include Mario Lemieux in this simply because I have never played with him in a video game before, and I thought it be interesting for him to be the leader of this team, as a rookie in the game. Gretzky is being added because I plan to follow the career of Lemieux and Gretzky as the enter the league at the same time as rookies.

I’m going to try to implement some rules this dynasty to make things challenging for me. Already I don’t have many players with much value, besides the top 6 or so in the draft, and a few prospects in the coyotes system. (Including Laurent Dauphin, Who I’m aware gets very good in this game).

So, a few Rules/Restrictions I have thought of:

MAX 5 deals from draft to draft. Meaning before the 2014 draft I can make 5 deals, once I get to the draft, this number will reset, and I can have another 5 deals I can make until It resets again at the following draft

Not allowed to trade 1st round picks (unless to move up in draft) until I become a contender. Being an expansion team I think this only makes sense.

From the coyotes system, I got 5 very good prospects, Max Domi, Laurent Dauphin, Brandon Gormley, Brendan Burke and Mark Visentin. To make things interesting I must trade TWO of these prospects by the end of the 2014 draft.

Have to avoid “loading up the team” to an extent. Meaning try to have players within their roles. 3 1st liners, 3 2nd liners, ect.

Until I make the playoffs, self-imposed salary cap must remain 10 million below the actual salary cap ceiling.

Anyone with any ideas for more rules or restrictions for my dynasty, let me know! Anything that will up the challenge or make it interesting I would love to include.

Also, a note on salary cap. After I selected my team, the team’s cap was only around 25 million. So I just had the computer automatically fix my team to reach the floor. Meaning everyone has a higher cap hit than originally. Most notable Mackinnon’s cap hit is now 6.070 million. For me this isn’t a big deal, I’m still just at the floor for the cap, and no one is signed for longer than 3 years. However Lemieux will obviously get a major raise this off-season from his current 0.920 million.

A quick note on player editing as well; I haven’t done much editing, there was a few players in the NHL that I wanted to make small changes to (Ben Bishop to 4 gold star instead of red) and I also did some editing within the draft classes. Mostly just editing to make players such as Aaron Ekblad and Connor McDavid around 75 overall or so he could play right out of the draft.

I'm going to try to stay very active with this GM. Obviously with the holidays coming up it will get off to a bit of a slow start, but I hope to maintain a steady flow of updates.

Re: NHL 14 BAGM: The Story of Mario Lemieux and the Seattle Snipers

Gretzky Chooses His Team

The NHL welcomes it's second up and coming superstar as Wayne Gretzky has decided to sign a one year contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Leafs have long awaited a top line centre, and it seems Gretzky is about to become that for them. Interestingly Gretzky chose to sign a one year deal for just under 1 million dollars. Assuming he has the year many expect, Toronto may be in a tough spot when it comes to staying under the cap while meeting Gretzky's demands next off-season.

In other news, the man said to Gretzky's "rival" Mario Lemieux has been named the Captain of the Seattle Snipers. Mario is a true leader on and off the ice, the obvious choice for a the new team in the league with many young players on the roster.

Much is already being made of this said rivalry between Lemieux and Gretzky. While both are friends off the ice, they understand where all the talk is coming from.

"Wayne and I both understand that we are considered top young players in this league, we don't necessary like that the media has pinned us against each other, however speaking for myself it does add a little extra motivation when I go out there each night, it will be interesting when we play Toronto in December"

-Mario Lemieux on his supposed rivalry with Wayne Gretzky.

News from around the league

Flames sign defensemen Michael Stone to a 1 year deal
Avalanche sign defensemen Oliver Ekman-Larsson & Mikkel Boedker to a 1 year deals
Islanders sign Goaltender Mike Smith to a 1 year deal
