Re: a few question before buying it....
You are in for a treat.
The ranking system, I don't know. I've never really paid attention to it.
I've played ten games online so far, and I've not yet had someone even attempt a spin layup or spin dunk on me. I've pulled off a couple spin layups, but it's actually somewhat difficult; you really need to be in the right place at the right time to pull it off.
For the most part, people have tended to play man, although there has the occasional zone. Fortunately, the zone is much less effective this year, and it's pretty easy to shred them with wide open 3's, especially against the 1-3-1 zone.
So far, the cheese hasn't been too bad, especially in comparison to 2k13. This is due in large part the last two paragraphs, as well as the live ball physics and the massively reduced number of dunks. It also helps that most foolish shots in the paint will be blocked with impunity, and defenders seem to do a much better job defending passes into the paint.
All in all, I've found the game extremely enjoyable and a huge step up from 2k13, especially if you're more of a defensive guy. For example, of my 10 games, I've held my opponents to under 60 points 6 times, and this is on 6 minute quarters. The game is, in my opinion, definitely worth a pickup.
