Will This Be The Greatest Oregon Team of All Time?

This team on paper is looking better than any other Oregon team that has come before. Including the famed 2001 Ducks, 2005, 1995 Rose Bowl, and all the Chip Kelly teams. The 2010 team is close, but this team has all the talent in the world. We saw how dangerous Oregon was the past several years, and now, the talent level is arguably higher than ever. This may be the team that challenges the SEC supremacy.

Look at this lineup:
QB: Marcus Mariota (watch out he's a year older and a year wiser)
HB/Errything: Deanthony Thomas (fastest man alive, most dynamic player in college football)
HB: Thomas Tyner (5 star recruit)/Byron Marshall/Ayele Forde
WR: Josh Huff (2nd-3rd round NFL prospect)
TE: Colt Lyerla (best TE in the game right now)

The defense has reached new heights. Boseko Lokombo, Ifo Ekpre-Olomu, Terrance Mitchell, etc. all potential All-Pac 12 first teamers/NFL prospects.

Mark Helfrich is going to continue where Chip left off, he learned under him and the transition will be seamless and smooth.

I think this is Oregon's best bet for a national title in years. What do y'all think?

Lets pump the breaks a bit and ask this question once the season has actually been played.

There is no such thing as a "Greatest Team of all Time" on paper.

Nope. Here's a few reasons why...

1. New coach
2. You say Mariota is a year wiser, so are the opponents. They now have a year worth of tape, and an entire offseason to gameplan.
3. Stanford has also improved
4. Nick Saban

I think Usain Bolt would have something to say about your analysis of DAT

Interesting you don't mention the offensive or defensive lines. Oregon has had skill guys in the past, but the difference now could be guys like Grasu. That's the area that Oregon has struggled in big games in the past, and has been their problem with Stanford.

Nevertheless, I'll still be rooting for them. I've been full on the Ducks bandwagon since the Bellotti days, I enjoy their style of play.

Re: Will This Be The Greatest Oregon Team of All Time?

The lines are better than they were to start last year, but still a bit thin on the defensive side. So this is maybe the thing to think about: Remember last year how everyone on Oregon's d-line was injured, and they still somehow played Stanford and several other opponents tough? Well, Michael Clay and Kiko Alonso were insane at LB. I think those losses will hurt a ton. There is nobody close to them presently on the roster. Ducks are as weak at MLB as the days of John Bacon.

On paper it is a very nice team, but I think Stanford is better. Mariota will be improved, but so will Kevin Hogan. The guy just looked unstoppable in that offense.

It is really quite impressive overall how Stanford has sustained itself as an elite program for a number of years now. Hard to believe it's the same program I watched from the stands in Palo Alto with about 1000 others in 2007. Cardinal came back from a 21 point half-time deficit only to still get thrashed by Dixon and co.

Re: Will This Be The Greatest Oregon Team of All Time?

"DAT" isnt even in the top 10 as far as fastest current college player, much less fastest man alive
