The 30-Team Control Guide

30-Team Control Guide (OSFM roster v2 version)
I’ve seen a lot of people asking somekind of walkthough (me included) so I thought this information should be assembled in one thread. I mostly did this for myself, as a guideline, but thought it could also be useful to others. A huge thanks to Knight, Ripner and everyone associated with OSFM roster, as this would have pretty much no purpose without their work.

Edit: I just realized, I took the liberty of doing that without the OSFM staff consent. So if any of you guys have a problem with it, just let me know, I'll take it down.

Alright folks, here we go.

Step 1: Prior to starting your Franchise
First, you’ll need OSFM v2. Download it from the Vault, it should be near the first page, under Knight’s name (file is called O.S.F.M.-v2O.D.)

Then, you’ll need to create separate profiles. In the third menu, go to "User Settings", and create the following profiles.
  • Human
Set everything the way you like it, as this is the profile you’ll assign to your team. But make sure you put the injuries to "Manual" in the "General" section of "Gameplay". Also, you might want to turn "OFF" the Post-Game Auto-Save to avoid any problem later on (more on that later, in Step 5). In "Mode Specific", put everything you want complete control of to manual (this includes Line-Ups / Rotations, 40-Man Roster, Roster Moves, Scouting, Drafting, Waivers, Injury Management, Management, Trades, Free Agency and Contracts).

Go back to the main menu, applying changes.

  • CPU Manual
(Optional...if you chose not to create, use "Human" instead for the rest of this walkthrough)

Go back to "User Settings" and, while on the "Human" profile, click create and save your second profile under "CPU Manual". This profile will give you control over specific areas of the CPU Controlled teams in your franchise.

Make sure you are now on "CPU Manual" (the base should be exactly how you set it for your "Human" profile), and change the following settings to "Auto" in "Mode Specific": Scouting, Drafting, Injury Management, Management and Contracts. This should leave Line-Ups / Rotations, 40-Man Roster, Roster Moves, Waivers, Trades and Free Agency to "Manual".

Note that you could also keep/change "Contracts" to "Manual" if you want to make these type of decisions for all the 30 teams during the offseason, without the CPU getting in the way.

This profile will be used for the 29 CPU teams in your franchise, but mostly only at the beginning of your franchise (during Training Camp) to make sure you get to Opening Day with the same roster these teams had in real-life.

Before going back to the main menu, click "Use as Default" on that profile. Then go back to the main menu, applying changes.

  • CPU Auto
Go back to "User Settings" and, while on the "CPU Manual" profile, click create and save your third profile under "CPU Auto". This profile will give the CPU pretty much full control over the team management, so that you don’t have to take care of every daily little thing during the season.

Make sure you are now on "CPU Auto" (the base should be exactly how you set it for your "CPU Manual" profile), and change everything to "Auto" in "Mode Specific".

If you care about having a correct line-up and rotation, even in CPU vs CPU games during the regular season, keep "Line-Ups / Rotations" to manual, so that the CPU won’t change everything. But be aware that leaving this to "manual" means you’ll get a pop-up screen every time a starter gets injured, not only for the 30 MLB teams, but their affiliates as well. So if you don’t care about correct line-ups and rotations for CPU vs CPU games, I strongly suggest you put it to "Auto" like the rest, as you'll still be able to correct the line-ups for a CPU team when your team is facing them during the regular season (more on that later, in step 6).

This profile will be used for the 29 CPU teams in your franchise, pretty much all year long, after Training Camp.

Go back to the main menu, applying changes.

Step 2: Create your Franchise
Create a new franchise, using the OSFM v2 Roster you previously downloaded from the Vault. In the "Franchise Team Select" screen, hit the square button (select all). If you did the first step right, chosing the "CPU Manual" as the default profile, every team should now have it next to their name.

Go to the team you want to use, and change the profile to "Human" with the right stick and press start.

In the "Options" screen, leave everything intact. Note that "Forced Trades" doesn't have to be ON in a 30-team controlled franchise, as you pretty much have the last say over any offer that you make with any of the 30 MLB teams. You can of course use your own judgement there or, as a reference, use the Official Trade Discussion Thread where users can give you some good insight if you want. The OS Arbitration Panel Thread is another place worth a look at.

Step 3: Spring Training Camp (Setting the Injuries)
At any point DURING Spring Training, you can manually injure players from any team. Ripner compiled a list of injuries before the season started, which is available here.

...or you can use CBS Sports Injury list.

(Note: I'll share my list once I have it typed out).

To manually injure a player, go to the third menu, and click on "Disable List". From there, press R1 (which should bring up the complete roster of the team you’re on) and click on the player you want to set an injury to. The type of injury affects the minimum and maximum duration, and aren’t always as short/long as the ones on Ripner’s list. So you might have to find something else to get the right duration.

Once you have set their injuries, press L1. You should see the injured players listed under "Bench". Move them to the appropriate "Disabled List" by clicking "X" on their name.

In OSFM v2 Roster, the players injured in real-life are put in Class-A, but are on the team’s 40-man roster. Since every player on the 40-man roster are brought up to MLB for Spring Training, injuring them during Training Camp will make them unavailable for the specified duration, but these players should be brought back to MLB once their injuries is dealt with, provided they are good enough to remain on the 25-man roster.

Step 4: Spring Training Camp (Going back to the Minors)
On the last day of Training Camp (click "March 29" then "Sim Through Date" if you don’t intend to play the Training Camp) is when you send the 15 players that didn’t make the cut to their minor club. By sending them down at that point in time, they should all go back in their correct place in their minor club’s line-ups / rotation (just like it is set in the OSFM v2 default roster).

Note that you can't send down any player that you previously put on DL. They'll remain on their MLB teams, but won't be counted in the 25-man roster. Once healthy and removed from DL, these players should stick with their MLB teams.

In OSFM v2, the following players should be sent down, unless manually injured:

Step 5: It’s Opening Day !
Once you have set all the injuries, sent back to the minors everyone that wasn’t on the team on Opening Day, and looked at all the Training Camp stats you may want to look at, click on "End Spring Training", as you are now ready to play regular season baseball !

...almost !

Before you simulate to your first game, go to the fifth menu, and click on "User Settings". The name of the profile should be written at the top. Click on "Gameplay", then L1, which should bring you to the "General" screen for that profile. Go at the bottom, and change "Injuries" back to "ON". Repeat that for the other two profiles, applying changes on your way out.

This would be a good time to save your franchise, twice more than once. Save it a first time, and never save over that file EVER, so that you won't have to do the whole thing ever again. You can then load that save, and assign your human profile to a different team, should you chose to start a new franchise with another team eventually. Then, save your franchise a second time, and use that second save as your franchise in progress, which you can overwrite over and over again. This is why I personally turn Post-Game Auto-Save off in my Profiles.

Leave the profile association to what they are for the first week of the regular season, so that the players you sent down out can clear waivers without any team claiming them. Once you’ve reached the first Saturday (April 6th), switch the 29 other teams to "CPU Auto".

In order to change the profiles, go in the fifth menu again, then click on "User Settings". From there, click on "Settings File Association", and go through the 29 teams, changing the profile with the right stick ("CPU Auto" should be the next one to the right).

Then go back to the main menu, applying changes on your way out.

Finally, if you don’t want the "mail" icon to flash continuously for the 29 other teams, go to the mail icon by pressing select, and click on "ALL" twice. This should remove all the check marks for the team you’re currently in control of (the logo should be at the top-right of your screen). From there, press R2, and repeat for every team but yours.

Again, at this point, saving your franchise (but remember, do NOT save it over your first save if you want to keep that save as a starting base for other franchises…use the second one you created, or create a new one if you haven't already) might be a good idea, as you are now ready to playball !

Step 6: Enjoy the season !
Now that all the other 29 teams are under "CPU Auto" control, you should be able to run through your schedule easily.

TRADES AND POOR CPU LOGIC
Just remember to check the pending trades on a daily basis if you want to control that part of the game, to make sure the CPU doesn't make any stupid moves. To do so, go to the fourth menu, click on transaction, then Pending. The "Waiver Wire" screen should pop-up. Click on L1 twice (Trade Offers) and go through every team by pressing R2. Since all 30-teams have a profile assigned, you can accept or refuse any deal, by and with any of the 30 teams, giving you complete "commissioner" control over the trading market.

LINE-UPS FOR THE OPPOSING TEAM
If you chose to let the "CPU Auto" adjust his line-ups and rotations, but still want authentic line-ups and rotations for your opponents, just switch that team profile back to "CPU Manual" (or "Human" if you didn't create the second profile) and fix/update the line-ups and rotations before the series begin. You can do so by following the path we did in step 5 (User Settings / Settings File Association). Note that you can alter the line-ups and rotations of any team using with any profiles, but doing so while having "CPU Auto" profile on for your opponent will let the CPU counter your changes as soon as you simulate a day.

Of course, with the many injuries and perhaps trades, you’re pretty much gonna have to build their line-ups and rotations on your own, using outside references of choice…but sometimes, it can be worth it as the CPU doesn’t always make the best choices.

Once the series is over, don't forget to give back full control of team to the CPU, by once again assigning that team the "CPU Auto" profile.

IN-GAME SCORE UPDATES
Since you’re using 30-team control, you’ll have to simulate the other games of the day prior to your team's game if you want in-game score update. To do so, click on the appropriate date in your calendar, then "View Today’s Game". Click on the CPU vs CPU games, then simulate. Once you’ve simulate them all, play your game and you should get the updates just like you would in a normal 1-player franchise.

FINAL WORD
That pretty much covers it all…I think. If you spotted any mistake, or would like to provide some additional infos to that walkthrough, feel free to comment. I’ll try to keep this updated so that we can get pretty much all the informations related to 30-team control in one place.

Re: The 30-Team Control Guide

on a side note.....even if you have things set to "auto" on the profile for the other 29 teams (or the human team) You can still go in and make changes. IE if you have roster moves set to auto, you can still make manual roster moves, it just means the CPU will also make those moves. So, that third profile is really not necessary.

The third profile is "CPU Auto"...so I guess you're talking about "CPU Manual". It is necessary however if you don't want the CPU to counter your moves after a day of simulation. Eventough we can make those changes with any profiles, once you simulate a day, the CPU will just change everything back the way he wants it (including line-up and rotations). If you want a specific line-up for, say the Atlanta Braves, when you're facing them in regular season, you need that "CPU Manual" profile to be active for the CPU team for the entire series, so that the changes will stay.

...unless I missed something.

True, but I just use two profiles, and set Lineups/Rotations to Manual, and everything else to auto. That way, the lineups stick, but the CPU does everything else, yet I can step in and override any stupid trades I see.

If an injury happens, I simply click "Auto" on the prompt, and let the CPU handle it, and replace the player in the lineup. That way, If I want to change it I can, but the CPU only changes the lineup in the case of an injury.

Okay, I see what you mean. Yeah, it pretty much gives the same result, as the CPU is making the decisions if you click on AUTO everytime there's a empty spot in one of the line-ups, just like it would with Line-Ups set on auto. The third profile just gets rid of those pop-ups for you. I guess that's pretty much its only pros compared to your technique, at least during the regular season.

And what do you do in the spring training, you just modify the profile itself, so that things like waivers are manual ?

Re: The 30-Team Control Guide

Thank you for creating such a comprehensive list.

I think I have messed up already though. I added all of the injuries on the last day of Spring Training, then placed those players on the DL.

Once I did that however, I was unable to move them down to Class A. Are you supposed to wait until after you send the players down before you put them on 15/60 day DL?

Nope, you did good. Once a player is on the DL, you can't move them, but they don't count in the 25-man roster. Once they'll be remove from DL, the CPU's gonna keep them in the MLB, and send the weakest player down to respect the 25-man limit.

Edit: Oh, unless you injured players in AAA and AA. I personally only put on the DL those that are to be sent down to Class-A, because they are usually the most important ones, and the more likely to retain there spot in the MLB once they come back.

I skip Spring Training the first season (I set each team's 25 man roster before doing so, so the CPU doesn't make changes)

In supsequent springs, I keep all the settings to AUTO, except Lineups/Rotations. Reason being, in real life, teams must use an option on a player to send him to the minors even in Spring Training. Players who are out of options have to pass through waivers as well.

Only thing I might consider doing, is having a second save, just to play/sim the Spring, so I can add my non roster players, and minor league free agents to the 40 man roster to use them in Spring. If any of them make the team, then I can go back to the original save, and add them before I end spring training. If that makes sense (I wish they would add Non-Roster Invites to Spring Training)
