Underrated and Underappreciated players in the NBA

One player that fits both bill to me is Al Horford.

I believe he is one of the most complete big man in the NBA. First of all his offensive game is not flashy but he knows what shot he wants and he knows how to execute them hence his consistently high shooting percentage. Also a decent passer out of the post and he has good natural instincts playing down low. Defensively, he plays with heart. Al is gonna be around the ball challenging passing lanes, contesting shots and going after rebounds. When I see Al play he always seems to make sound decision and always in control. He shows a good sign of a leader and a winner. To me, the only team holding him down is the team he plays for.

Horford? Decent player, good shooter, very active. Overwhelmed by the biggest bigs since he is only about 6-8 and 240. Has trouble when he is doubled on the move. Also tends to wait too long before initiating his post up moves. Good 3 space rebounder. Susceptible to face and go players in man to man situations. And I've always been disappointed in his baseline rotations.

Kirk Hinrich, Reggie Evans, Nick Collison, Joakim Noah, Chuck Hayes, and Matt Barnes are my current favorites in this category.

I don't think you can call Noah underrated nowadays. He was an all-star.

If you think about work put in with no reward for it, just look at Shawn Marion. Some how he's never made it on to one of the All-Defense teams.

DeShawn Stevenson fits in here I think.

Despite that size difference he can still hold his own for most of the time and with the extinction of the true big man in the NBA that benefits Al skills even more. Those tendencies you mentioned I haven't seen that much to really stick out but I'll agree he does wait a bit too long at times to make his post move but thats very fixable as a player at least he doesn't try to his force shots.

Sticking with the Al theme, Al Jefferson.

How are we defining "underrated" and "underappreciated"?

Players when you talk about a certain position or his overall game never gets the credit/praise he deserves.
