Here's the story of the 2017 Packers. This is the kind of season I want from this game. Some highs, some lows, a chance to make clever moves and suffer from stupid mistakes. That feeling that if you can just get he play calling right you might win! Enjoy!
First off, I fired the GM to meet the team goal and fired the LB Coach as the owners wished. I left the hiring to the owners and GM. The new GM, Warren Flanagan, was about like the old one but the LB Coach, Ronde Barber, was a step up. I was a bit surprised that Barber was a LBC vs. a DBC!
Now to get ready for the FA musical chairs. I really didn't have any expensive extensions coming up. I figured all the players I wanted to keep would sign for something similar to their current deals. What's more, as a result of spending my first two years in Green Bay getting bad contracts off the books, I had $38M to work with! I set aside $7M for my draft class and another $3M just to be safe and then set out to see if I could find a way to spend $28M wisely!
I had a pretty good kicker (Mason Crosby) who was being unreasonable about his extension during the season. He wanted $1.8M/year and the tops in the league for kickers was $1.6M. So I decided to wait and franchise him. The Franchise tag was $2.2M!!! And the tops in the league was still $1.6M! I franchised him anyway.
Then I went shopping. First player I had interest in was RE Corwin Cobb. He was an RFA but they only had him tendered at a 2nd. He was an 89 OVL and I knew he had higher potential because I drafted him when I was coaching the Redskins! I got him for $41M/5 yrs. with an $8M bonus but no incentives! I was tickled that they didn't match. Huge improvement and it met a team goal!
Then came MLB Martin McPeek, 92 OVL. I didn't feel MLB was a problem. Othello Dent, a 2015 draftee was progressing nicely and DJ Williams was holding up well. I was reluctant to preempt the plans I already had in place and he was older than I like (33). BUT... he only wanted a 2 year deal and he was in excellent health and there was that 92 OVL! I got him for $10.5M for 2 years including a $3.5M bonus and 2 $250K incentives I didn't expect him to meet.
I missed out on the Kicker I wanted, the bidding was just silly.
My third acquisition was Dorin McKinnley, WR 84 OVL. I wasn't happy with either of my first 2 WR and had let their contracts expire. Now I didn't find anyone much better. At least Dorin was younger (26). I got him for $20M for 5 years including a $5,5M bonus and no incentives.
That was it predraft. I got three starters and spent about $17M against this year's cap. I was also active in the trading market!
I picked up Marcus Vess, HB 84 OVL for a 4th. He had two years on his deal and was only $2M per year.
Then someone offered me a 2nd for Krabbenholt!!!
I asked them to increase their offer and they threw in a 7th. Happy Days
I traded off Mason Crosby for peanuts 'cause I let my money get mad. I regretted it!
I went into the draft with picks in 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 5, 5, 6, 6, 7, 7.
I got what I hoped was a star SS in the first and a solid center in the 2nd. I missed on a WR in the 3rd and traded out of the 4th. I missed three times in the 5th but found a starter at LE in the 6th along with a good QB and a project WR. In the 7th I found a useful backup LT.
I ended up with 11 picks and I think they all signed for minimum contracts before the first preseason game!
I simmed the preseason games and after the last cut I found a jewel:
So after the final cuts a primo DT is cut by the Texans. It so happened I was having trouble finding suitable players to spend my money on, so I was READY! (house rule, pay starters a fair price). I grabbed him, dropped him and waited for the bidding to start. No dice. I could see him by going to Roster and the FA but I couldn't resign him. So I simmed forward to the next week to see what was happening. He never came up and he wasn't in the pool or on any team!
So I got in my time machine and went back. I waited until the next week to drop him and he immediately came up for bids. I got him for $6.2M for one year rather than the silly $2.0M I would have had to pay to just sign him.
I picked up a better #3 HB (J Sosa 80) and a much improved backup FS (T Henderson 84) as well. During training camp I had added a #4 RB (66 C Aldridge) and a #4 CB (79 D Cromartie) for kick returns. My Key 28 to start 2017 looked like this:
QB 89/92 24 K Warfield
HB1 84/86 26 M Shakur
HB2 84/84 28 M Vess (trade)

DT2 88/90 26 A Greenwood (FA after final cuts)
LOLB 80/86 24 D Edwards (soon replaced by DJ Williams moving from MLB)

K 84/89 24 R Watson (FA)
P 86/91 33 J Ryan
I felt good about this team. According to the GM we were 10th in overall talent but my coaching staff was only average (by observation of the coaching advantage bar during play). Still, I've won Super Bowls with less talent. But I am coming off an 8-8 season.
The season started with a very unusual schedule. Five of my first six games were on the road! Luckily, I don't think that makes any difference in this game! Here we go!
Full season records given for opponents.
W 1-0 Atl (8-8)
45-17 Vess ran for 74, Marshall caught 6 and Lewis had a pick 6. I was considering whether I could afford the roster spot for Aldridge and then he ran back a KO for a TD!
W 2-0 Bal (6-10)
48-21 Shakur 189 yards with TDs of 2, 52 & 74. M Sledge had 2 Pick 6s. They were both chosen Player of the Week.
W 3-0 Min (6-10)
43-14 two Int & TD for T Lewis. Shakur out after 2nd carry.
W 4-0 Pitt (4-12)
38-24 K Warfield had 5 TD passes! He was PoWeek.
As you might surmise, at this point I was afraid I had somehow overpowered the game again and was headed for a boring season of blowouts. Au contraire.
L 4-1 Car (7-9)
11-41 They had 3 defensive TDs. TO were 0-5! Oh well!
W 5-1 Det (8-7-1)
30-20 I was concerned about this one. We lost two close games to Detroit last year. This was close too, but a 95 yard pick 6 with 1:00 to go saved my bacon!
L 5-2 TB (10-6)
6-28 Warfield threw 6 interceptions. They had 3 Pick 6's.
L 5-3 Cle (12-3)
38-41ot Weird game. The Browns had 2 defensive TDs. We missed 2 FG. They ran the ball once in the 1st half! I missed a shot at a game winning 46 yard FG at the end of regulation. With about 7 seconds left and a TO in my pocket I saw my receiver make the catch and run out of bounds. I thought I could take one more shot to get closer, use my TO and then kick the winning FG. Then my assistant coach starts screaming to take the TO. I looked and the clock was running! I hit the wrong button and we were going to OT!
(Dunce cap)
W 6-3 Min (6-10)
38-13 I own these guys!
W 7-3 SF (9-7)
27-9 On the good side of 6-2 turnovers.
W 8-3 Phil (11-5)
55-14 We had 2 pick 6s and 6 TD passes.
L 8-4 Chi (9-7)
35-38ot Near the end of regulation I got the benefit of a penalty for PI, but it didn't gain as much ground as declining the penalty. I declined hoping the clock would run but it didn't! If I could have run that extra 30 seconds off the clock they would never have tied the game!
L 8-5 NO (11-5)
42-49 They got a KOR TD with 0:44 left! I had two shots from their 18 at the end!
This was getting serious!
W 9-5 Chi (9-7)
23-14 It wasn't as close as the score looked. I out gained them 354-116. Turnovers were 1-2 in their favor but I had that silly stat, time of possession, 44:16-15:44. That translated into 70-47 offensive plays.
At this point there were still 11 teams with playoff hopes. It didn't look good for the Packers to get a first round bye but a win over Detroit in the finale should secure the division championship.
W 10-5 Cin (4-12)
32-27 Watson missed 3 XPs! Warfield was hurt so Watters got the start. I had to drop a DT (Bond 79) to pick up a backup QB, Bobo (77). Watters threw for 298 2-1 and Shakur ran for 153.
W 11-5 Det (8-7-1)
44-10 This was a replay. I had virtually won this game once when the system locked up. I was up 17-14 with a first down and less than 2:00 minutes to play. I anguished over whether to just simulate until I got a win or just replay. I finally decided to replay. I love playing the game so why not replay an interesting game. Besides, I was virtually locked into winning the division but failing to get a bye.
I sat out Warfield QB, Shakur HB1, Barron RT, and Beal TE2. Vess ran for 157 on 20 carries. Needless to say everything else went well.
So we won our division and are set for a rematch with TB.
During the year I extended AJ Hawk. I had a few others that were willing to extend with no bonus. That gives me maximum flexibility!
I tried very hard to extend A Greenwood (DT 87) but ultimately decided his price was too high for the #2 DT in a 3/4 scheme. I'll probably franchise him and try to trade. I have a large chunk of money I don't need until Warfield's extension comes up next fall.
At some point it occurred to me that Henderson (FS 84) who was playing 5th CB at 78 would be a great extension. At FS prices I could sign him long term and then move him to CB. Sigh, too late, I'd already run him off and he didn't want to negotiate with me anymore!
Maybe I should franchise him?
Well, on to the playoffs! TB had beaten us soundly last time. Here's hoping it was something we can overcome!
W 12-5 TB (10-6)
28-25 Down 7-17 at half. Pulled up to 14-17 in 3rd. Up 21-17 with about 1:40 on TB 3. Hope to pound line and run clock but Vess scored on 1st down (wonder if they lay down?). They flew down the field, scored, made their 2 points and I was just an onside kick from my nightmare. Whew, I woke up a 28-25 winner. Shakur had 83 rushing and 57 receiving. Vess had 35 rushing and 3 TDs. Forest caught 7 passes!
Next up, rematch with the Saints. First time around they won a shootout with a KOR TD in the last minute.
L 12-6 NO (11-5)
21-26 Heartbreaking loss!
Down 10-0 we scored with 2:08 in the half to make 7-10. Got the ball back and at 1:18 threw a pick 6!
Third quarter went 0-0. Had 4th and goal from their 2 and went for it. We didn't score and they wiggled out and went to my 30 and made a 47 yd FG! Several unlikely things there!
Now down 7-20 early in the 4th, we put together a drive to bring it to 14-20. On the first play after the KO, I decided to defend against the outside run to the wide side of the field. I called a Stinger, where the ROLB circles right and upfield outside. They ran the play I was defending against for an 80 yard TD!!!
Well, at least it didn't take long! Down 14-26.
Now with the drama of back to back TO exchanged, we drove the field again and pulled up to 21-26 with 3:36 remaining. I resisted the urging to ownside kick. We had them at 3rd and 14 they ran a draw for 15!!!
We stopped them again and then failed on 4 straight passes, these were reliable passes with ten to twenty yard potential.
They took over and ran when they probably should have kneeled. They fumbled and we recovered with over a minute. Sigh, call reversed, they kneeled out the game.
They fumbled twice on sacks and recovered! Marshall dropped 4 passes! It just wasn't my day!!!
