BREAKING NEWS out of Detroit today is that the Lions have fired Coach Jim Schwartz. After a successful 2011 season that seen the Lions finish 10-6 and in the playoffs for the 1st time in forever, It was thought that the Lions under Schwartz would continue to improve on their 2011 season. But a very difficult off-season that seen a few players in trouble with the law and the lack of punishment from the coach towards these players (with the exception of Aaron Berry being released) the Lions owner didn't like the atmosphere being created under Coach Schwartz.
The team has already hired a new coach to take over for Schwartz. The team introduced Alcide Spitz as the new head coach for the team at the same press conference they announced the firing of Schwartz. Coach Spitz was an assitant coach under Schwartz, this will be his 1st time as the head coach.
"There will be changes around here" Coach Spitz said at the press conference. It would all that he said because after that he walked out of the room leaving the media just staring at the microphone, GM Mayhem, Bill Ford (son of the owner) wondering what just happen. No one was able to ask the new coach any questions. After a few seconds of awkwardness, Mayhem and Ford followed their new coach out of the room.
Couple Twitter comments about the news out of Detroit
@SkipBayless: Another bad move in a long series of awful moves by the Lions. J. Schwartz needed more time. Should have given it to him.
@MarkSchlereth: Alcide better be ready to lead the Lions. Not many things harder than being a NFL head coach.
