Varisty Sim Team Adjusted Sliders (360)

Opponent adjusted sliders are a concept I have used for 4 years now. The concept is pretty self-explanatory;I adjust the sliders based on the level of competition I face. My goal is to produce as simulation like results as possible. At this point I would never goback to any other slider concept again. I tend to start with a low end BCS team;examples in previous years were Colorado, Kansas, Virginia, and this year Indiana. It’s common for me to never break thru and win a conference championship, although I have, just as its common in real life for the samething to happen to these teams. I place a lot of rules on how I play within the game, recruiting, all of it. Clearly these sliders and the way I play are not meant for everybody, but if a 6-6 record is ok to you if you should be a 6-6 team then I suggest you read further.

I’ve found the best mode to be Varsity and it’s always been Varsity. With so many moving parts to the sliders I’ve always found it best to keep the HUMAN sliders the same (outside of Special Teams)

QB ACC 0
Pass Block 0
WR Catch 25
Run Ability 100
Run Blocking 0
Pass Coverage 0
Pass Rush 0
INT 25
Rush Defense 0
Tackle 0

At this point I check the match up screen and the grades for my teams Offense and Defense compared to the CPU grades for Offense and Defense. The point scale ranges from negative 4 to positive 4. To explain how it works. Let’s say I have a C+Offense and I face a B+ Defense. That is a difference of 3 points, C+ to B+. So the CPU defense would have a +3 rating. To which I would input the corresponding +3 rating defense for the CPU. Here is the varied CPU Sliders, I put them into an Excel sheet to make it easy to use.

CPU OFF

QB ACC +4 100, +3 100, +2 100, +1 100, 0 100, -1 95,-2 95, -3 90, -4 90
Pass Block +4100, +3 95, +2 85, +1 80, 0 75, -1 70, -2 65, -3 60, -4 55
WR Catch +4100, +3 100, +2 90, +1 85, 0 80, -1 75, -2 75, -3 70, -4 70
Run Ability+4 100, +3 100, +2 100, +1 100, 0 100, -1 95, -2 95, -3 90, -4 90
Run Blocking+4 100, +3 100, +2 100, +1 95, 0 95, -1 95, -2 95, -3 95, -4 90

CPU DEF

Pass Coverage+4 100, +3 100, +2 95, +1 90, 0 85, -1 80, -2 75, -3 65, -4 60
Pass Rush +495, +3 85, +2 75, +1 65, 0 60, -1 55, -2 50, -3 40, -4 35
INT +4 100,+3 90, +2 85, +1 75, 0 70, -1 65, -2 65, -3 60, -4 55
Rush Defense +485, +3 75, +2 70, +1 60, 0 55, -1 50, -2 50, -3 45, -4 45
Tackle +4 80,+3 75, +2 65, +1 60, 0 55, -1 55, -2 50, -3 50, -4 45

ST USER/CPU- I use the rating system based on the individual K/P attributes. I won’t go above 60 POW and 45 ACC on the high end and I won’t go lower than 50 POW and 35 ACC on the low end.

Rules I use in play

I always use one of the 3 suggested plays by Corso, no audible, if it’s no huddle I scroll the play real quick without looking and that’s my new set of 3 plays to choose from. No audible unless it’s to remove PA pass.

I don’t run any go routes from the slot and rarely if ever throw a go route of any kind unless my man beats the corner off the line to the outside. Most my passing game is In routes, hitches, slants, posts, fades, swings. I use a run oriented W. Virginia playbook.

I only control one defender on defense during the course of the entire play. I will shift and slant lines, press cover or back off, only one defender is allowed to be audibled. I won’t shift any defender prior to the play closer than any LB inany play. I won’t jump indicators pre play that a play is going one way bycheating my user defender over.

I also use recruiting rules, I will discuss those if you wish.

So far on the year I’m 5-4, I won 4 of those games against teams that were worse or the same then me. I could have lost two of the 4 but was able to prevail. I lost 4 games, all 4 teams were better than me. I had a chance at Northwestern and Illinois but couldn’t pull out the win. Got crushed by Michigan State and Ohio State, my last win was a 21 point 4th quarter comeback against Iowa. Which thus far was the only team I was able to beat that was better than me although I had my chances against NU and IL.

With these sliders expect everything to be very hard against good teams. Teams that are much better then you will INT every mistake, shut down your run game, and the pressure will be relentless. The CPU offense can be hit or miss. The run game is steady enough to always threaten. We really don’t have much room to make it any better. It can go for 150+ certainly. User run game is not easy, lower ranked teams with a user committed to the run can produce 175 to 200, but rare. Higher rated teams it’s not uncommon to go for under 40 yards on 20 carries. Again, against better defenses, especially +3 and +4’s every mistake will count against you. What I like about it, is the mistakes are on you. I don't see freak show picks. I see myself making bad decisions and paying for it compared to not paying for it aginst weaker teams. I was able to beat Iowa by just staying in the game and getting a flurry of points late. Actually taking advantage of a rare pick 6 for me. It is possible to run against good defenses. Illinois was a +2 but I managed production I was used to seeing out of a -1.

If you likethe concept but not these exact sliders these are the elements we can control the most.

User Run Game– You could really adjust this to your liking, just modify CPU RD or TKL

User PassRush/CPU Pass Rush- This is the best way to lower USER or CPU passing success. A good rush will slow down the passing game and these sliders work.
CPU PassCoverage and USER/CPU INT- In conjunction with high CPU coverage, rush, and INT I’m clearly trying to make it hard to pass. All these sliders are responsive to your liking. I'm sure many here will find my CPU pass rush ability to be intolerable. I make quick decisions and don't want margin for error.

Play SpeedThreshold is set at 0, I use 8 MIN QT but 9 also works.

I can provide Auto SUB, Special Team, and Penalty info if people find this approach interesting.

The bottom line with these sliders, everything feels incredibly rewarding. My win against Iowa still has me in a good mood. It's hard as hell, but it's possible. When I'm loving a sports game of any kind it's usually a result of me finding a slider set that gives me this feeling.

Re: Varisty Sim Team Adjusted Sliders (360)

Well man I really thought I had gotten the setup I was gonna use for the rest of my tiime with 13, But what the hell man I've tried 82,000 other things this year one more couldn't hurt.

Really like the idea of opponent themed sliders tho.

I'll play through a couple of dynasty games with a lower team and post some thoughts and boxscores for ya!!

Appreciate, this will be the rough set I will stick with. I've seen enough variation within the variation over a full season. Back in love. I do play a very specific way, but the general stats I see on an even rated game.

100-150 yards rushing Human/CPU
200-300 yards passing Human/CPU
2-4 Sacks Per game
Comp% around 55% or so

Against higher rated teams I generally rush for under 75 yards, except I was able to run fairly consistent against Illinois and some degree Iowa. Couldn't do anything against MSU and Ohio State. Warning, against higher any defense +3 over your offense they will pick just about every mistake you make. Good thing is that slider is adjustable, also expect pressure no matter what. Even lower rated teams will force quick decisions from your QB or you will be eating dirt. 8-9 min quarters, Slow, Speed Threshold is 0. Let me know if you have questions, curious to see what these do with other people beside myself.

Re: Varisty Sim Team Adjusted Sliders (360)

Fixing to plug these in now as soon as I finish making Mr. Nations conference movements.

Are you also using the 3 Corso plays for defense? How is that working for you?

Re: Varisty Sim Team Adjusted Sliders (360)

Ok so just to make sure this is set-up right:

UAB(me) vs. Troy

OFF C- C (+1)
DEF D D+ (+1)

Human sliders stay the same so cpu sliders:

Acc: 100
PSBLK: 80
WRCTH: 85
RBAB: 100
RNBLK: 95
PSCOV: 90
PSRSH: 65
INT: 75
RSDEF: 60
TCK: 60

Right?

Also what are the recruiting rules you said you were using? If i'm gonna give your way a shot might as well do it all.

I run a 3-3-5, it works pretty well. I have my coaching sliders set to more aggressive on defense. I blitz a lot, as with these CPU RB ability sliders, especially against better teams, you need to get as many defenders to the RB as possible. They will break a good amount of tackles. So I try and slow them up or attack the line as much as I can. I allow myself 3 user pick plays per half, but rarely use them. Only in case of a late game situation that puts me in a horrible call. Like dime on 4 and 1. A few more notes. I suspect I will have to find tune these slightly more, but for the way I play they're just about right. The key to take from it, is if this set isn't right for you don't give up. A lot of room to play with and the adjusted sliders methods has literally brought back this game from the dead for me every year. Without it I would be done. I wish I knew how to post the fancy realistic stat screens others do, but here are my results so far.
Oddly or not oddly enough, very comparable to that in real life.

(H)Kentucky- Basically even teams, won 38-21, wasn't that much of a blow out. I had a defensive TD, Kickoff TD, and 4 INT by my defense. None of which is something I've seen much all year. Week 1 always seems to produce a crap shoot.

@UMASS- I had a pretty good advantage here, won 41-17, the game was never in question

(H) Ball State- Basically even teams, won 24-21, didn't expect to much a battle but Ball State gave me everything I could handle.

@ Northwestern- Northwestern had the edge, they had the better team but not by a landslide. Close game for the duration. I lost 27-21, had a chance on the final drive as Northwestern fumbled in my territory late.

(H) Michigan State- MSU defense was +4 and the offense was good enough to ride that out. I was way to aggressive in this game, lost 48-21, throwing 5 INT's. MSU capitalized on every mistake I made. Was never really in this one.

(H) Ohio State- They rated out slightly below MSU but it didn't matter. Just like MSU I though pass happy points gave me a chance. Not happening. 5 more INT's and OSU dominated 45-17.

(@) Navy- Pretty even teams, slight edge to me. Felt like I controlled the whole game winning 16-10, Navy got a late score. Option was mildly effective. Every time Navy started to muster a drive a holding call would kill them. Surprised my offense was so lackluster, but I'm running my back QB the rest of the year due to injury.

(@) Illinois- Illinois had the edge, especially on D. to my surprise I ran well and controlled this game. I really thought this was mine for the W, but once again mistakes cost me the game. Illinois ran it up late and I lost 31-14

(H) Iowa- Iowa was much better then me, better then Northwestern and Illinois, but worse then MSU and OSU. I battled all game. Ran all game. Focused on not making that mistake that would kill me. I still made one, but a pick 6 my way made it 14-7 middle of the fourth. Quick 3 and out and I was able to hit a 80 yards slant pattern 4 plays later. Then finally getting the ceiling drive with under 30 seconds left. Took 4 quarters to score a point in this game but I got 21 as fast as I had all year and just when I needed it. Great game with me pulling out the 21-14 W.

That is correct on the ratings you did. It will be interesting with such low rated teams.
My recruiting rules are as follows
1. Eligible to recruit any in state player
2. Eligible to recruit any pipeline player 3* or lower
3. Eligible to recruit any player if your school starts week 1 (not preseason) as #1 school.
4. Eligible to recruit any 2 star player
