The Detroit Lions are one the NFL's most storied franchises. Unfortunately, most of that story revolves around losing.

The Lions have never won a Super Bowl in franchise history (46 years and counting). They won the 1957 NFL Championship Game over the Cleveland Browns by a final of 59-14. That was 54 years ago.

Prior to 2011, they had not made a Playoff appearance since the 1999 season when they were beaten 27-13 by Washington in the Wild Card. It has been 20 years since they won a Playoff game, second only to the Cincinnati Bengals' 21-year drought. During those 20 years, they have lost in each of their 6 appearances, all in the Wild Card round. The Lions have not won a division title in 18 years. They have zero conference titles to their credit.

In 2009, Jim Schwartz took over the reigns. In his first season, the team went 2-14. In year 2, they improved four games to 6-10. Last season, the team improved by another 4 games, finishing 10-6 and ending a streak of 11 consecutive seasons without making the Playoffs. Schwartz has led the team to a regular season record of 18-30 during his three seasons and continues to improve each year.

With the emergence of players like Stafford, Suh and Avril combined with the consistency of Megatron and Tulloch, the team finally appears to be heading in the right direction. There is now some cushion between Schwartz and the hot seat, but in Detroit, you never know what could happen.

Leshoure Faces Two Game Suspension

The NFL has reached a decision regarding Lions running back Mikel Leshoure. Leshoure missed his entire rookie season with a torn Achilles tendon and it appears we will have to wait a little bit longer to see him in action. He will be suspended for the first two regular season games for violating the league's substance abuse policy and will be eligible to return in Week 3 against the Tennessee Titans. In addition to receiving the two game suspension, he will be docked four weeks of pay. He will be eligible to play in the preseason.

Head Coach Jim Schwartz addressed the media soon after the announcement was made. "Even though Leshoure is serving his suspension, he can participate in most team activities. He can goto meetings, he can lift, he can get treatments, but he cannot practice with the team", says Schwartz. "During this time, we expect him to continue working hard and to be ready when his number is called, whenever that may be."

Leshoure did speak briefly with the media, saying, "I'm just going to continue doing the things I've been doing like I'm going to play. I'm going to have to get away from my routine, stay active, and act like I'm playing."

Leshoure was expected to be the starting running back out of camp with the injury concerns surrounding Jahvid Best's concussion. At this point, it is unclear if we will ever see Best on the field again. He failed his neurological test and the team has given no timetable for his return. There is speculation that Best will not be cleared and that the team wants him to accrue another NFL season in order to access the NFL's pension plan. This setback could potentially open the door for Kevin Smith or Jerome Harrison to become the starter in Week 1.

Re: The Lions Den | JHB's Detroit Lions

Disciplinary Actions for Fairley Still Unknown

Commissioner Goodell has stated that a decision regarding a potential suspension to Lions defensive tackle Nick Fairley has not been made. When asked about the course of action, Goodell replied, "I met with Nick earlier this Spring and we talked about where he is. We don't have to wait for the legal system to play out by policy, particularly if there is a pattern of behavior. We want to be respectful of the legal process for now." Goodell did confirm popular belief, however, saying "Discipline will come at some point."

Fairley has been arrested twice this offseason - once for possession and once for DUI and evading police.

Head Coach Jim Schwartz spoke briefly with the media about Fairley. Schwartz said, "Everybody makes mistakes - not everybody makes two mistakes in a row."

The team (Detroit Lions) released this statement: "We are aware of the reports about Nick and are in the process of gathering more information."

It is unknown how the team plans to handle the situation, but all signs point to him being on the field come Week 1.

When reached for comment, Fairley said "I'm glad to be out there on the (practice) field. I'm just coming in every day, working hard and not really thinking about it."
