Draft Logic Has Issues

I've been messing around creating draft classes whole day.

Something is definitely wrong with the draft logic. It heavily favors big man (Which is kind of NICE), then small forwards and point guards. Shooting guards are too underrated. I had 2 shooting guards being the best players of the draft rated 76/75. Both had decent potentials compared to rest of the draft. They got drafted 10th and 14th. Later I bumped their rating ratings to 79-77, they went down to 8-12 range but no dice. The players picked ahead were rated between 73-67 and had lower potentials.

One of these guys are 6'5 other one is 6'6. I even thought that maybe the game heavily favors size over skill, but no. A 6'8 power forward rated 68 with low potential kept getting drafted as 1st or 2nd.

I did run 5 drafts or so, different scenarios & teams did not matter. It is not about the "need" either. Cavs kept drafting a 70 rated PG despite having Kyrie Irving, where they could have drafted a stud SG with enormous potential and or some other bigs. I remember reading that people were drafting Shabazz Muhammad (he is the highest rated player in all of the 2013 draft classes) at late 10's. Guess that wasn't a fluke. AI officially hates SG's and undervalues them.

I completely agree - i simmed an association season just to check out what 2k's auto-classes were like - and they weren't awful, just that the first pick was a 68 rated ovr guy who rode the bench all year, and there were two guys in the 75-79 ovr range that got pick mid-late 1st round.

That's realistic. Most of the time, SG's aren't the main priorities in the draft. Look at Wade. He was the 5th pick in the 2003 Draft, and Darko was a bust at pick 2. So the draft logic is just as broken as real life. Kobe was the 13th pick of the 96 draft(although his rookie year was very mediocre)

Yea something is wrong with this mode. I have a detailed draft class in where Shabazz, Nerleans Noel, and Cody Zeller are clearly the top rated players in the class. The all got picked after the 10th pick and Cody Zeller got picked at 21st.

The kicker is that I did 3 simulated seasons and the pg's Ryan Harrow and CJ McCoulghin were always the #1 and #2 picks no matter what the teams were. I edited all the team profiles,etc.. and this always happened. This was not the case last year.

I had the exact same problem with Ryan Harrow going #1 as well.. Zeller dropped to 17th!

Yeah I know, at first I thought the same. This might be what they've tried to achieve with the new draft logic. But Wade did not fell to 10s, neither Jordan. Kobe was a high school prospect in a time where hs prospects were re-emerging, so it is not a good comparison. Also, the top 6 picks in Kobe's draft become good pros, all-star caliber guys. J.O'Neal was selected at 17, where 4 years later kwame brown became top pick.

I saw Ryan Harrow and McCallum getting drafted 1-2 as well. In my draft class, I have a pg who has a better overall value then both these guys (top 3 in rating, top 5 in potential). He gets drafted 5th, not 1st or 2nd. I guess that classes become somewhat hardcoded and predetermined once they are randomly created by the game.

Re: Draft Logic Has Issues

I think it's pretty realistic this year. When was the last time a SG wen't #1 in the NBA Draft? Possibly '96, but Iverson was drafted as a PG. I'm currently making a fictional draft class by transferring my College Hoops 2k8 draft class (from my Legacy) into NBA 2k13. The best player transferred so far is a 75 overall SG (4 points higher than the second highest player) and during some of the association and drafts I've tested, he gets NBA comparison's to Kobe Bryant. Sometimes he goes number 1, other times, he falls as far as 5th. It ultimately depends on the team and their needs this year, which is good in my book. Last year, despite scouting, every team picked the player with the highest overall to potential ratio. I like that now teams can overlook or underestimate players. The margin of error that exists is realistic.

Yea I think 2k is on the right track into having the draft unpredicted but when you are playing your season and I have Nerleans Noel, Shabazz, and Cody are projected top 5 picks,

And not one of them is drafted in top 10 but Ryan Harrow is projected late 1st rounder, but continues to be a top 2 pick

Now in the off-season, when we are able to get a "mock" draft, Ryan and CJ becomes the number 1 and 2 picks. And for some reason during the mock draft, the teams are all scattered, meaning that the team that has the 1st pick in the actual draft is not listed as the team that has the 1st pick in the mock draft. This is very weird and I don't see how 2k could not see this during their testing phase. Maybe it is just my season but when another poster stated that Ryan Harrow and CJ are the top picks as well, something is definitely wrong.
