Good Special Teams Strategies for coach mode

I know this is probably pointless but does anyone have any idea how to get better special teams production in coach mode? I love the mode but this is the one area I struggle with. As far as I can tell, there's no way to call for a fair catch or get the punter to punt toward the corner on a short field.
On a lesser note, it would be nice to find a way to get better returns on punts. For some reason I seem to get better production when I line up for a punt block than set up for a return, which makes no sense. Just wondering if anyone knew a workaround for any of these issues.
