Association Mode Story Line Idea: The Dwightmare: Orlando Magic

THE DWIGHTMARE

Intro: After almost a month of deciding and searching through new GM’s, you have been selected to take over the Magic organization as our new GM. The job description is very simple: help return our organization to a championship level and win it all. Our team was contending for a title back during the 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 seasons. This team is very capable of making championship runs, but bad decisions have slowly but surely hurt our chances to getting back to that level. Our main concern going forward is the future of our franchise center Dwight Howard. He has become very frustrated with the organization. He has stated numerous times that he wants to be traded; he will not sign long term with us, and will test the free agent market once his contract is up. At the same time he has also stated that he wishes to only stay in Orlando. These indecisions and what most of the media has labeled this “The Dwightmare” have put our organization in a state of uncertainty. It will be up to you to handle this situation the best way possible and return our team to a championship level. Our current roster is full of players with horrible contracts and we are really looking to get rid of a lot of them. With some of these contracts we as a staff need to sit down and discuss each player and where they stand as members of the Orlando Magic. Also we are looking to acquire players that are very athletic, versatile, and can create their own shots, this way we don’t always have to rely on the three ball. We have seen that relying on jump shots can win games but it will not take us to the top. As far as Dwight Howard, whether you want to keep him or trade him, I am on board with whatever your decision is. If you do decide to trade him, I will fully support your ideas of going through a rebuilding process and working from the draft. Orlando is a beautiful city and I’m confident that we will have no problem bringing in quality draft picks and attracting free agents. But before we get to that I will need to ask you a few questions so that we can get a good feel for what type of team you want to assemble. We as an organization believe in being on the same page at all times and communication is key to that success.

Questions: Answer the following for us…
First off you have to decide on how you plan on moving forward with this team. As I stated before the Dwight Howard situation has our organization by the neck and before you can do anything you have to decide on how you wish to handle that. One thing is for certain though, WE REFUSE TO LET HIM WALK AS A FREE AGENT AND GET NOTHING IN RETURN. Regardless of what you decide to do to, getting rid of bad contracts is a MUST. In the past our team has been known for its ability to shoot the three ball. Give the ball to Dwight, let the opponents double, pass it back out to one your shooters and have them knock down the shot. As other teams and players become smarter, this strategy is no longer that effective. With that being said we think it would be good to look into trying to find more versatile players that can attack the rim and create their own shot at any moment. As stated before none of this can be done until the Dwight Howard situation is resolved. How would you like to move forward with our organization?

1) Keeping Dwight Howard and forming a balanced offensive team around him.

2) Keeping Dwight Howard and forming a better defensive minded team, and returning this team to one of the top defensive teams in the league.

3) Trade Dwight Howard.

*IF YOU HAVE CHOOSEN TO KEEP HOWARD AND CREATING A BALANCED OFFENSIVE TEAM THEN CONTINUE READING TO 1). IF YOU CHOOSE TO KEEP HOWARD AND BECOME A DEFENSIVE MINDED TEAM, SKIP DOWN TO PARAGRAPH STARTING AT 2). IF YOU CHOOSE TO TRADE HOWARD SKIP DOWN TO PARAGRAPH STARTING AT 3).

(1) I’m really interested and I like the direction you will be going with the Dwight Howard Situation. Although this decision is very risky, I have confidence that you will do what it takes to put some good offensive talents around our franchise center and changing his mind to making him want to sign with us long term. I think it’s very impressive that you want to balance out our offense and have a more balanced attack. This way we will have multiple threats to aid our superstar and we will also not have to focus on shooting the three ball so heavily. Most teams in the NBA today think that the only way to win in this league now is to stack superstars on one team. However I am not completely sold on that idea just yet. Back during our 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 finals run’s we had our only superstar and the rest of the team was composed of top of the line role players. This is something I would love to see our team get back too. Are you sure that you want to keep Dwight and go with a more balanced offensive approach?

(1-1) Yes I am sure. I feel keeping Dwight and adding multiple threats to help him is definitely something that will help him want to sign a long term contract extension with us, and ultimately return us to the Eastern Conference elite and win the championship.

(1-2) No you are right, on second thought I think we should shake it up a bit and go after superstar players. We will need to somehow copy the blueprint of teams like the Thunder and Heat. Let’s get form our own BIG THREE here in Orlando.

*IF YOU HAVE CHOSEN TO CONTINUE TO BUILD A BALANCED OFFENSIVE TEAM DESPITE THE PRESSURE PUT ON BY YOUR OWNER THEN CONTINUE READING AT THE (1-1) PARAGRAPH, BUT IF YOU ARE WANTING TO FORM A BIG THREE OF YOUR OWN THEN SKIP DOWN ON TO THE PARAGRAPH STARING WITH (1-2).

(1-1) I fully support your decision to not follow what seems to be a trend in the NBA in creating a Big Three here in Orlando, and instead just having a balanced attack. Since you want to put a more balanced team on the floor, there are a few guidelines and rules that we will need to lay out that are specific to this build of a team.

ROSTER RULES FOR (1-1) BALANCED OFFENSIVE TEAM: PRE-SEASON 1
• In recent years, building through the draft has not been our team’s strong point and our organization is not willing to continue to try this approach. Our draft picks really do not mean anything to us, so you may trade them if you wish.
• You can make as many trades as needed before our first game but I feel it’s important to build team chemistry after, so we will not be making any trades after our first game of the year, until the month of February.
• We want to get rid of a lot of bad contracts, but there are certain players we don’t want to get rid of, so let’s sit down and discuss which players are expendable and which are off-limits.

ROSTER TASKS FOR (1-1) BALANCED OFFENSIVE TEAM: PRE-SEASON 1
• As I said getting rid of bad contracts is a MUST. Jason Richardson, Quentin Richardson, and Chris Duhon are players whose contracts we really want to get rid of. The only way to get anything in return for these guys is to trade them and receive expiring contracts of players in return. I am thinking that we should find multiple quality players, with low salaries, sign them to one year deals, and make sure they add up to the enormous salaries to one of our players. I’ll let you choose, but before our first game two of these three players need to be traded. In return we need to bring in at least 3 quality players. One player needs to be a 75 overall or above and the other two needs to have a rating of 70 overall or better.
• Hedo Turkoglu has a massive contract for no reason. He hasn’t lived up to his comeback in Orlando; therefore we feel this is a waste of money. Although he does show spurts at times of the old Hedo that took us to the Finals, it is never consistent. This is not mandatory, but we suggest that you put him on the market and see what you can get for him. If you do decide to trade him, I will expect to see two players with expiring contracts with a 70 overall rating or above.
• Jameer Nelson is absolutely off limits. Once his deal is over, sign him to either a two or three year deal. Nothing more.
• As for the rest of our players on the roster you can do as you please with them but any trade we need to be getting the better player out of each deal. So any time you trade any of our players you will need to trade for some one of a higher rating.
• All of our starters need to have ratings of 74 or above, and filling in solid backups will help you in the long haul tremendously.
• Also each player that you received must have a rating of a B or higher in Inside Scoring and Athleticism.

*IF YOU CHOOSE TO GO WITH (1-1) A BALANCED OFFENSIVE TEAM THEN YOU WILL NEED TO SKIP DOWN TO OUR TEAM GOALS AT THE BOTTOM. IF YOU DECIDED TO GO WITH (1-2) FORMING A BIG THREE OF OUR OWN THEN READ BELOW OUR RULES AND TASKS FOR THE ROSTER.

(1-3) Although I am very skeptical about this idea, I am willing to give it a try and see where this goes. With this formula I have seen other teams reach their championship aspirations by forming a Big Three. Since you want to build a Big Three here in Orlando take a look at some of our roster rules and tasks below. The roster rules will be the same for any style of team you create but our tasks for what type of players to bring in will obviously change.

ROSTER RULES FOR (1-2) FORMING A BIG THREE: PRE-SEASON 1
• In recent years, building through the draft has not been our team’s strong point and our organization is not willing to continue to try this approach. Our draft picks really do not mean anything to us, so you may trade them if you wish.
• You can make as many trades as needed before our first game but I feel it’s important to build team chemistry after, so we will not be making any trades after our first game of the year, until the month of February.
• We want to get rid of a lot of bad contracts, but there are certain players we don’t want to get rid of, so let’s sit down and discuss which players are expendable and which are off-limits.
ROSTER TASKS FOR (1-2) FORMING A BIG THREE: PRE-SEASON 1
• Keeping Dwight in this situation is a must. We will need to pair him up with two other all star talent players. I will leave that decision up to you as to who those players will be.
• Jameer Nelson has been good to the city of Orlando, AND WILL NOT BE GOING ANYWHERE. Even if you decide to get an all star caliber point guard, we can always slide Jameer into the backup point guard.
• Creating cap space and getting rid of bad contracts is a MUST. With that being said, all players except Dwight and Jameer are eligible to be traded in an effort to get two star players in Orlando.
• The two players we bring in to create the Big Three must have a rating of 83 overall or higher.
• The two players we bring in MUST be the position of Small Forward, and or Point Guard, or Shooting Guard.
• Because we are still one of the best three point shooting teams in the league, keep at least two three point specialist that can spread the floor. They MUST have an A rating on Outside Scoring.

*IF YOU CHOSE TO GO WITH (1-2) THEN YOU WILL NEED TO SKIP DOWN TO OUR TEAM GOALS AT THE GOOTOM AS THEY REMAIN THE SAME FOR ANY STYLE OF PLAY. IF YOU DECIDED TO GO WITH (2) KEEPING DWIGHT AND FORMING A BALANCED DEFENSIVE TEAM THEN READ BELOW OUR RULES AND TASKS FOR THE ROSTER.

(2) Ah now that’s a smart man, you must know that even though offense sells tickets defense wins championships and that is definitely what we are looking for. We need you to assemble a team that is going to out hustle the rest of the league and play tough defense night in and night out. We weren’t the best team in our finals run, but we hustled and played excellent defense, and that’s something I would definitely like to see our team get back too. We want to get a team on the floor with plenty of height and length. Also a team that always thinks defense first, and able to score by using their defense. We have made a list of different rules and task that we expect to see you implement in our roster. Take a look below and let’s get this team shaped up and back to playing that Orlando Magic defense that got us to the finals.

ROSTER RULES FOR (2) KEEPING DWIGHT AND FORMING A BALANCED DEFENSIVE TEAM: PRE-SEASON 1

ROSTER TASKS FOR (2) KEEPING DWIGHT AND FORMING A BALANCED DEFENSIVE TEAM: PRE-SEASON 1
• Keep Dwight, as without adding defensive minded players, he makes our team one of the top defensive teams in the league.
• Glen Davis is off limits to being traded.
• We need to make sure that all of our starters have at least a B rating in either the category Perimeter Defense or Post Defense.
• Clear cap space and get rid of two of our bad contracts. (Out of Jason Richardson, Hedo Turkoglu, Quentin Richardson, and Chris Duhon).
• Outside of Dwight, we need to have two players on our team that has an A rating in Perimeter Defense and two players with an A rating in Post Defense. These must be bench players.

(3) So I see that you have decided the best way for our organization to move forward is to trade Dwight Howard. We both know that he is very unhappy hear and has requested plenty of times. I think we should just go ahead and trade him and get our franchise back on track. There’s plenty of ways we can go about this. We can trade Dwight and get back a bunch of draft picks and young players in return. I feel that by taking this route and trading Dwight, we should start to model our franchise after the Oklahoma City Thunder’s team, by building through the draft. We could also trade Dwight for almost equal talent. This would definitely mean an all star player in return. How do you wish to handle Dwight’s trade situation?

(3-1) I feel the best way for our franchise to move forward is to let Dwight go and acquire young talent and draft picks in return. I have seen how successful the Thunder have been by building through the draft and with their core of young players, and that is the route I feel is best to take. I understand that our team will go through some type of slump, but I feel with patience and developing our newly acquired players, we will return right back to being one of the elite teams in the east. I will accept nothing but young talent and a bunch of early first round draft picks in exchange for Dwight’s services.

(3-2) The best way to handle this situation is to trade Dwight for a player with almost equal talent. It doesn’t matter which position, but I would require someone of the same all star talent. Please understand though, what I will be looking for a player of the same position or close to it, but if push comes to shove I will definitely take whatever all star talent I can find. By using this approach, we will be able to continue building towards a championship, and will not have to worry about a serious fall off.

*IF YOU HAVE CHOSEN TO TRADE DWIGHT AND ACQUIRE YOUNG PLAYERS IN RETURN THE CONTINUE READING AT THE (3-1) PARAGRAPH, BUT IF YOU WANT TO TRADE DWIGHT AND RECEIVE A PLAYER OF ALL STAR TALENT THEN SKIP ON DOWN TO THE PARAGRAPH STARTING WITH (3-2).

(1-1)I fully support your decision to take our team and completely start over. We understand this will not be an easy process but we are confident we will be fine and come out great from it. Just the fact of Dwight Howard not holding the organization hostage anymore, should make things a little less stress free around here. Since you want to start over and acquire young players, there are a few guidelines and rules that we will need to lay out that are specific to this build of a team.

ROSTER RULES FOR (3-1) BALANCED OFFENSIVE TEAM: PRE-SEASON 1
• In recent years, building through the draft has not been our team’s strong point, but this year we will definitely be taking that approach again. None of our draft picks are to be traded at anytime.
• You can make as many trades as needed before our first game but I feel it’s important to build team chemistry after, so we will not be making any trades after our first game of the year.
• We want to get rid of a lot of bad contracts, but there are certain players we don’t want to get rid of, so let’s sit down and discuss which players are expendable and which are off-limits.

ROSTER TASKS FOR (3-1) TRADING DWIGHT FOR YOUNG TALENT AND STARTING OVER: PRE-SEASON 1
These players cannot and will not be older then the age of 24. Also all players needs to be a 70 overall or.
• Hedo Turkoglu has a massive contract for no reason. He hasn’t lived up to his comeback in Orlando; therefore we feel this is a waste of money. Although he does show spurts at times of the old Hedo that took us to the Finals, it is never consistent. We suggest that you put him on the market and see what you can get for him. I will expect to see two players with expiring contracts with a 70 overall rating or above and no older then the age of 24.
• Jameer Nelson and Glen Davis are absolutely off limits. Since Dwight is leaving town, Jameer will be our new team captain. Once his deal is over, sign him to either a two or three year deal. Nothing more.
• As for the rest of our players on the roster you can do as you please with them but any trade we need to be getting younger and the better player out of each deal. So any time you trade any of our players you will need to trade for some one of a higher rating.
• Remember all new players u receive in trades need to be no older than 24.
• Also each player that you received must have a rating of a B or higher in Inside Scoring, Athleticism, and Basketball I.Q.
• All of our starters need to have ratings of 71 or above, and filling in solid backups will help you in the long haul tremendously.

*IF YOU CHOOSE TO GO WITH (3-1) YOU WILL NEED TO SKIP DOWN TO OUR TEAM GOALS AT THE BOTTOM. IF YOU DECIDED TO GO WITH (3-2) THEN READ BELOW OUR RULES AND TASKS FOR THE ROSTER.

(3-2) This seems like the most logical approach to me. This organization is not use to losing. If we take the starting over approach we will have to accept the fact that we will be a losing team for quite some time. I instead prefer to receive a player with all star talent and continue doing everything we would have done as if we were to keep Dwight. Because you want to receive someone of all star caliber in return, take a look at some of our roster rules and tasks below.

ROSTER RULES FOR (3-2) TRADING DWIGHT FOR ALL STAR TALENT: PRE-SEASON 1
• In recent years, building through the draft has not been our team’s strong point and our organization is not willing to continue to try this approach. Our draft picks really do not mean anything to us, so you may trade them if you wish.
• You can make as many trades as needed before our first game but I feel it’s important to build team chemistry after, so we will not be making any trades after our first game of the year, until the month of February.
• We want to get rid of a lot of bad contracts, but there are certain players we don’t want to get rid of, so let’s sit down and discuss which players are expendable and which are off-limits.
ROSTER TASKS FOR (3-2) FORMING A BIG THREE: PRE-SEASON 1
• Trade Dwight for an all star player with the rating of 85 overall or above. The position of this player can either be Center or Power Forward.
• Continue on with building team as if Dwight were still a part of the time. (USE SAME TASKS FROM 1-1, 1-2, AND 2. WHICHEVER ONE YOU CHOOSE).

*IF YOU CHOSE TO GO WITH (3-2) THEN YOU WILL NEED TO SKIP DOWN TO OUR TEAM GOALS AT THE BOTTOM.

Why should he ask for permission?

I didn't realize only one person was allowed to come up with scenarios for ways to play the game...

What settings?

Scotty doesn't have a claim or a monopoly on Association story line exclusivity.
