Re: Back in Blackshirts - Nebraska Cornhuskers Dynasty (NCAA 13)

2012-13 Nebraska Football Preview

Bo Pelini has a good job as the Nebraska Cornhuskers head coach. Taking over a 5-7 team Pelini has won at least 9 games four straight years. What remains to be see is if the Husker fans will be happy with just being good.

It's an interesting time for Husker fans. The team is in a new conference and the southeast has dominated the landscape in recent years. Can the Nebraska faithful reconcile memories of recent elite play with the reality of the present.

The mid-1990s Nebraska Cornhuskers were efficient and brutal, predictable and unstoppable, dazzling you with the option and taking your head off with the Blackshirts.

The early-2010s Cornhuskers, meanwhile, are solid. Good, even. But good is not elite.
Aside from the devastating 2007 season that got the Bill Callahan era labeled as an undebatable, miserable failure even though he had delivered a Big 12 North title the year before. Nebraska has never felt further away from the game's true elite.

The Cornhuskers have won either nine or 10 games in each of the last four seasons, they have a strong, fun offensive backfield, and they should once again have a deep, interesting defensive backfield.

Nebraska will absolutely be good in 2012 … but in Lincoln, there is little difference between good and terrible. It appears that only greatness matters.

Re: Back in Blackshirts - Nebraska Cornhuskers Dynasty (NCAA 13)

Nebraska CB Mohammed Seisay puts a big hit on Eagles QB Cole Weeks

Huskers put hurt on Southern Miss.

LINCOLN, Neb. -- The Nebraska Cornhuskers defense made an early statement in the first half of Saturday's season opener. By halftime the Southern Miss. was down to their third string quarterback thanks to the Blackshirts.

The Eagles offense was clearly crippled and the Huskers took advantage, winning easily 34-10.

Taylor Martinez showed what many Nebraska fans had been waiting to see, accurate passing. Martinez hit 14 of 17 pass attempts for 191 yards and 2 touchdowns, he also carried the ball 10 times for 35 yards. It appeared Martinez made a concerted effort to stay with play to the second or third read, and it payed dividends in the Huskers pass game.

The offense as a whole got off to a slow start and first quarter ended with the teams at 3-3.

Nebraska dominated the 2nd quarter from the start scoring an early touchdown when Martinez hit Kyler Reed running down the seam from 29 yards out.

On the Eagles next possession second string QB Cole Weeks scrambled to his left and gained around 10 yards before taking a big hit and coughing the ball up. The ball squirted free from the pile where it was scooped up by Andrew Green who shook off a tackler and steamed 35 yards for the score.

Martinez closed out the half by hitting Quincy Enunwa for a 21 yard TD giving Nebraska a 24-3 lead at the break.

Mauro Bondi scored the only points of the third quarter on a 33 yard FG to make the score 27-3 entering the final quarter.

Brion Carnes came into relieve Martinez late in the game and hooked up with Jamal Turner on a third down slant the Turner turned into a 75 yard touchdown.

Southern Miss. did get a touchdown late when 3rd string QB Chris Campbell found Dominque Sullivan wide open on a blown coverage by Huskers 2nd team defense for a 42 yard score making the final score 34-10.

Rex Burkhead led the Huskers in rushing with 91 yards on 22 carries. Ameer Abdullah had 9 carries for just 21 yards.

Turner led the receivers with 4 catches for 97 yards and the one score. Tight end Ben Cotton caught 3 passes for 69 yards.

Next up for the Huskers is a trip to Los Angeles to face UCLA. The Bruins defeated the Rice Owls 30-10 in their opener.
