Tips for my first ever NBA2k game?

I just started getting into basketball and the NBA. I know the basic positions are but don't really know what their role is. Screens? Post up? Post low?

this is my first ever basketball video game ever.

Any tips for an absolute newbie would be great

Re: Tips for my first ever NBA2k game?

Hey man, happy to help. These are just suggestions, so everyone take it easy, but general ideas here:

PG-This is the quarterback, since I see you're a football fan. Usually his role is to set players on his team up for baskets, but lately PGs have taken on a more all-around role with guys like Rose, Westbrook, and Rondo in the league.

SG-Score, shoot, and defend. Michael Jordan did this.

SF-Probably the most all-around player on most teams. Lebron James, Scottie Pippen, Kevin Durant, Andre Iguodala are all players that do a little bit of everything and are usually pretty athletic as well. Score, rebound, defend, and pass.

PF-These are the flexible ones. Traditionally, these are post-up guys that get rebounds, block shots, and protect the area near the basket. However, there are some "stretch 4's" that shoot three pointers and force the opposing power forward to come out of their comfort zone near the basket to guard them.

C-These are your bruisers, they post up, stay near the basket on offense and defense, and are responsible for rebounding, scoring, setting picks, and blocking shots.

That's about the mos basic I can get. I have tips on playing the 2k games on my channel (link in sig). If you're not sure about where to start, my channel or many others on YouTube are good starting points to just watch and learn. Good luck to you!

Re: Tips for my first ever NBA2k game?

Well, it's tough to give you tips when you put the question that way.
Do you want to play with the whole team or are you going to play My Player?

Assuming that you're going to be controlling the full team, here are some tips:
-play through Training Camp, this helps you get familiar with the game and the controls
-stick to one team that you like, because you'll be able to learn it really well
-Get the difficulty in either Rookie or Pro, All-Star will frustrate you at the beginning
-Learn right-stick defense, or you'll be fouling a lot on the pump fakes
-Learn some basic plays to run on offense
-Pass with the icons (press R1 to bring them up, then choose who you want to pass to, X is the PG, O is the SG, square is the SF, Triangle is the PF and L2 is the center

When your PG brings the ball up the court (or other player on some teams, James and Wade will often do this for the Heat for example), you can press L1 to bring up an icon over each players head. From there you can choose a player, which opens a menu and lets you run plays for him. For now, I'd recommend you press right on the D-Pad and press L2, running the best play available, instead of you choosing what to run, seeing as how you're not familiar with Basketball in general.

The right D-Pad button allows you to set quick post ups, quick pick&rolls, quick Isolations and Cuts to the basket. These are fairly simple plays that you can use, they're not complex, and I don't have the patience to explain them, but really you run them a couple of time and you understand what they do.

You can also hold down the L1 button and some other player will set a screen for you. From there you can branch out, if you press L1 button again, the screener will go to the rim, if you hold it until he sets the screen, he'll get set for the Pick & pop (this is useful with a big man that can knock down jumpers, if the guy you're controlling gets doubled, the big man will usually be open, if the defense is fast to rotate, you can usually find someone open at the 3-Point line. The defense of course, will try to leave your worst shooters open, meaning that doing this effectively comes with practice, just like everything else in the game.

This is just scratching the surface on how to setup the offense. 2K has endless options, and it's impossible to list them all. You can do give and goes, you can send specific teammates on cut, you can even control the guy that is going to receive a pass. You should read the manual for all these controls. Also, learn Isomotion, as you can abuse slower players with it.

Defense is a lot tougher, I'd recommend setting your Defensive Assist Strenght (?) to 100, this can be found in the controller settings. You should focus on learning post defense, as well as right stick defense. Staying in front of your man is also very tough but you'll do it with practice

I also recommend you to test different camera angles, I use 2k, but you should use whichever you feel most confortable with.

Be patient on offense, always wait for the open shot. Don't force it, take what the defense gives you.

Learn the shot-stick controls, those are really really really useful (try not to use the shot button)

There are so many other things to 2K, but these are just some off the top of my head. You'll feel a bit lost at first, so just take it slowly and be patient, 2K is a VERY complex game, just keep trying to improve and don't get frustrated after a loss or after you feel the CPU cheated you (the CPU sometimes hits questionable shots, especially at the end of the shot clock, but they usually play fair, and you can stop them with good defense). Also if they hit 3 or 4 shots in a row, without you scoring, call timeout (select button) Momentum is very important

I know I left some important things out, such as what to do, such as coaching setting, playbooks and some advanced controls, but this should help you starting (mastering this will take forever)

Sorry for bad english, and I hope I helped

Re: Tips for my first ever NBA2k game?

Few simple things...

1) Don't get too frustrated if you're losing a lot in the beginning. Like any game, the more you play it the better you'll become at it.

2) Before you worry about basketball lingo/running plays/etc. try to get a feel for the game first. Build up some (videogame) muscle memory.

3) Have fun!

Awesome tips guys these really helped!

Im messing around with my player and play now modes just to get a feel for the game.

Another question though.

What's a good team to start a franchise with? I don't want to pick an easy team like Miami or the Lakers. I want a team I can rebuild and compete with. But im not asking for an undertaking.- Thanks!
