Ryan Larkey is in his first season as the ECU offensive coordinator. Prior to joining the Pirate staff, Larkey served as an assistant at Texas from 2007-2008. Hailing from Lake Charles, Louisiana, Larkey originally came to Texas to play football as a wide receiver and pitch for the Longhorns baseball team, but due to a car accident during his redshirt freshman year, Larkey was unable to play either sport. Larkey decided to join the staff at Texas as a graduate assistant. During the 2008 season, Larkey realized during the memorable Texas-Texas Tech game that if ran correctly, the Air Raid/spread offense that former Texas Tech head coach Mike Leach ran would prove formidable and began to study the offense himself. After graduating from Texas, Larkey accepted the role of wide receivers coach at Sam Houston State, where he further studied the spread offense. During the 2011 season, his third at SHSU, he became "co-coordinator" and helped lead the Bearkats to the FCS National Title game.

Larkey is currently the youngest coordinator in college football at the age of 27. On his age, Larkey states "I honestly don't think that will matter in the least. I've had great tutelage and I feel I'm well prepared to do my job and make my contribution to the team".

One of his biggest issuses is in the passing game. He can catch the ball, but he seems to turn up field before securing the ball, forcing easy drops. While he also has good agility, his size makes certain moves like the spin move look like it's going in slow motion.
