Rusty Bird: Escape from Portland

The Rose City looks so inviting in the sunset. Run while you still can.

Rusty Bird: I was made a lot of promises about Portland, Oregon. They were lies. The people here are insane.

Spoiler

I was told I was moving to one of the jewels of the Northwest. That it's like a totally different part of America. I guess that wasn't wrong.

I was also told I would get to coach basketball. I'm not sure how well we succeeded last year. We won a few games. We lost heaps more. They kept me on. The AD shrugged and said, "Go get 'em Tiger." Some pep talk.

Our squad is going nowhere fast. We're short. We can't shoot. We don't run. I already had to kick three players off the team for completely failing to show up. Something about spacing out.

I was told Portland was a basketball town. It is -- for the NBA. I wanted to bring the college game back, and people just shrug. Lots of strugging. I don't know if it's all the sweaters or what.

We've got a few guys who are committed and a bunch who are happy to be here. They say they want to win -- but they don't show it in practice. It's going to be a long year.

I need to get the hell out of Portland.

Re: OS "All-Star" Legacy (CH2K8)

YOU GET 2 YEARS. THAT'S IT.

[left]4/13/11 - Martin, TN: After the firing of Jason Jones two weeks ago, UT-Martin has found their new head basketball coach, David Walls. Walls was an assistant coach under Kevin Stallings at Vanderbilt for 6 years before he got the call from the Skyhawks AD. After a few interviews, UT-Martin decided to give him a chance.

"I am extremely thankful for everyone who was involved in this decision. I am grateful that I get to stay in my home state too which is a nice bonus" said Walls, "We will be looking to make big things happen here, now rather than later."

In an up and coming Ohio Valley Conference with the likes of Murray State, Austin Peay, and Morehead State; Walls will have to prove a lot in order for big things to happen now. And the Murray State's of the OVC aren't the only pressures he has to be successful early, Walls will be scrutinized by his boss on everything he does.

"He has two years to show us that he can make this team a very competitive one in the OVC" said the Skyhawks AD, "And when we mean competitive, we mean championships."

Re: OS "All-Star" Legacy (CH2K8)

Martinez to lead Seahawks

Logan Martinez, age 30, was introduced today as the next basketball coach at UNC Wilmington. The Seahawks are a program that has little basketball history as they are mired beneath superior schools in the CAA.

Martinez has been a successful coach at the high school level and in recent years has served as an assistant to Roy Williams and his athletic staff at UNC. Martinez has never held a head coaching gig in the college ranks however, so many alumni within the program have already questioned whether or not he has the experience to deal with the expectations of the position.

Nonetheless, Martinez is excited about his new team.

"I am excited to begin my career as a Seahawk. I knew several friends back in high school who attended UNCW, and they always bragged to me about how awesome the beach was while I was attending UNC. Well, now I get to boast how I'm the men's head basketball coach at this fine institution! Beach trips are on me when we big games! And no, NCAA, that's not a violation, so I don't wanna hear a peep from you guys after you hear about the beach parties I'm gonna throw when we win the CAA!"

The Seahawks will field one of the youngest teams in the nation as 7 of their 11 players who are projected to get extended playing time will be freshmen. UNCW's roster is certainly talented, but this group will certainly endure their share of growing pains.

JR SG Keith Rendleman looks to be a "Dark Horse" NBA Talent and will be the leader of this young squad. He is a multi-faceted player that will see time at the 2, 3 and 4 spots. In fact, he is a much better player in the post than out on the perimeter (80 Low post O). He also is an excellent rebounder for his position (88 OREB, 92 DREB).

Martinez has a lot to work with, but it will take time for this Seahawk squad to find their groove as these players become accustomed to playing with one another.

Re: OS "All-Star" Legacy (CH2K8)

A New Era Dawns in Greensboro

UNCG's Mike Dement resigned from his post as head coach of the UNC Greensboro Spartans last Thursday and the Spartans already have a replaement.

James Frizzell, who hails from nearby High Point, NC has been chosen to take over the head coaching position. Frizzell, a 25-year old economics major that graduated from UNCG several years back, has no experience playing organized basketball higher than recreational league, which makes many question his coaching credentials.

"Hey, I'm not going to lie to you, I'm a pretty lousy basketball player," remarked Frizzell jokingly in his opening press conference. "I can't shoot. I can't pass. I can't dribble. The only things I kind of have going for me is that I'm pretty fast and can jump pretty high.

"But who says you need to be able to play basketball well to coach it?

"I saw the job opening on Craigslist and decided to apply for it, mostly out of fun. It was all the more shocking when I received a call the next day calling for me to come into an interview, and even more shocking when I got the job!

"More than anything, I'm thankful for this opportunity. I just hope this isn't some cruel joke."

Frizzell will take a UNCG team that is expected to finish 10th (out of 11 teams) in the the Southern Conference this season. Only Wofford is expected to do worse.

Since you posted your filler I'd say it's safe to ask how would you handle when you guys play each other? I've been wondering that for a bit now

I don't want to speak for them, but I'm almost positive that if they are scheduled to play against each other the game would have to be simulated. With an online legacy like this, there is one save file that gets passed back and forth between the guys, so never once will two people be playing at the same time.

Yeah, you are correct. That's why we arent scheduling any regular season games against each other and hopefully, we won't get matched up in the NCAA tournament as well.
