What pitching / hitting control do you use ?

Hey all,

I'm pretty new to The Show, and I'm having a lot of difficulties playing the game at all star level with meter pitching and zone + timing hitting.

Would you advise me to go to pulse pitching + timing only hitting and stay at all star level, or keep the meter + zone/timing hitting at veteral level ?

What controls do you use ?

You're going to be aware of your controls a lot more than you'll be aware of the difficulty. Pick the control scheme you enjoy the most, and just adjust the difficulty (so in your example, stay with meter and zone, but on an easier level).

Plus, one control scheme isn't necessarily easier than the other, so you'd probably still have to lower the difficulty anyway.

Exactly.

Use the control scheme the feels the best, or that's the most appealing to your preferences/playing style.

No shame in starting out on an easier difficulty while you master the learning curve, and learn to create a smart approach against the CPU.

Being new to The Show, I'll have to adjust to any control scheme. I'm not quite sure what is the best one to enjoy the game :

- for pitching : do you have control on the pitch velocity by pressing x the first time, or the first white mark is just a control indicator ? I'm wondering if I'm missing something by playing with pulse pitching where I only control pitch location

- in batting, timing is much easier, but at the same time I believe the enjoyment of the game is to be able to adjust timing and zone when the pitch is delivered... not sure what to do there.

What are you guys using for controls, and why did you choose those controls over other ones ?

Re: What pitching / hitting control do you use ?

Your observations about Pulse Pitching are correct, you can't control velocity. I'm not sure whether it's random, or the CPU decides for you, but it's not as big of a deal as it initially seems, as you will still get a fair number of high-velocity pitches when you need them.

I use Zone hitting and Pure Analog pitching.

I am one that enjoys controlling my own destiny. I like to be able to aim my swings where I want them to be. Not only do I control whether I miss or not, but more importantly, I have full control over the type of swing. If I want to hit a fly ball, I can swing below the pitch. I want to just put the ball in play? Keep the PCI in the middle and use Contact swing. I feel more like I'm really at the plate, which is what I'm looking for.

You'll get an equally convincing speech for each control scheme though. They're all great. I've used Analog, and the Zone-Analog combination. I mean it: They're all great. I started the year out using Zone-Analog, but it's definitely quite the challenge, so I wimped out and stayed with Zone. Switching back is on my to-do list though. I used Pure Analog a lot last year. Just like the Analog pitching, I feel like it's the most natural of any control scheme. There isn't really anything else to say about it, other than it just feels right.

For Pitching, I like the simplicity of the analog stick and natural feel, without sacrificing my involvement. Pulse Pitching leaves me staring at the pulses for 3-5 seconds, so while I love Pulse Pitching, I think it would make my games quite a bit longer and more exhausting, as that's 124 times you are going to be expected to time the pulse perfectly. It doesn't necessarily get old, but you do.

Meter Pitching is what I used when I first played The Show January 2011, and I more or less used the meter option in other baseball games, like MVP. It's definitely enjoyable, I just like Analog better, that's really all there is to that.

You'll notice I left out Timing and Classic, hitting and pitching, respectively. Nothing against either, they are just a very different breed of controls, and you can't really group them with the others when it comes to describing them, or even choosing the one you want.

Classic Pitching and Timing hitting are all about staying true to the real-life balances and tendencies of baseball. When you are using something like Zone or Meter, your own ability is going to have a role in your results. C.C. Sabathia might have a 7.00 ERA, just because you messed the meter up a few times in his starts, and got killed.

At the same time, maybe you sign Luis Castillo and he hits .400. For some reason, you are just locating the PCI better with him, and he is putting everything in play.

Timing/Classic takes that stuff away. Luis Castillo hits like Luis Castillo (ie: he doesn't). Albert Pujols does Albert Pujols things. You still have deviation - deviation is what baseball is about. But the deviation isn't in your hands, and a lot of players like it that way. With Timing and Classic, you really get a feel for the pecking order in baseball, and you instantly become aware of which players are better, and whether your team is better than the team in the other dugout. It also forces you to step up your game as a manager, and make the right substitutions and all that other stuff, in attempt to take control of the game.

And that's my (not so good) attempt at an unbiased synopsis of all the controls. I'm not really an unbiased kind of guy, but I hope that helps some.

Regardless of what control scheme you use, this game takes time to be successful at. You just gotta get in your "reps". With that being said, I use Pulse pitching/Zone hitting, All-Star difficulty. It took about 2 weeks for me to really feel comfortable enough to play a game after all of that BP, but practice definitely pays off.

I use Timing/Classic. I want ratings to matter the most. But there's no right or wrong to play.
