The Number 24

Why is it that so many above-average baseball players wear the number 24? Ken Griffey Jr. wore number the 24 in his tenure with the M's, Willie Mays wore number 24 (so did Bonds when he was with the Giants, but that was because of Mays), Mark Texiera while he was with the Braves, Robinson Cano, Ricky Henderson, Pedro Alverez, etc.

I don't know if I'm just subconsciously looking for that number, or if I'm just crazy, or what, but I definitely think it's a pretty common number for such a... random number.

You left out the best active hitter who wears that number...I feel like I should let you figure out who that is, considering you mention Alvarez over this guy. Considering they now play the same position, it's kinda disrespectful to him. hell, it's not ok for me to put the two in the same sentence unless that sentence is "Pedro Alvarez isnt even close to being the player ______ is."

Re: The Number 24

Robinson Cano wears it in honor of Jackie Robinson (whom I believe he was also named after). It's just Jackie's number reversed. Don't know why others do though.
