Baserunner interference...

Why is it not called? The have been several instances I've seen when it should have been called. I hit a ball fairly deep to right and the RF stumbles and falls as he fielding the ball, I took this opportunity to advance to 2nd about halfway there I have to juke the 1B slowing me down just enought for the RF to hit the relay man and assist in throwing me out. Another one happened when I was rounding 3rd on my way home I have to dodge the 3B and lose just enough speed to turn what should have been an easy run into a bang bang play at home.

Re: Baserunner interference...

I've got you one better.

I hit a ground ball to the shortstop the other day with Starlin Castro. The ball sailed over the first baseman's head and into the outfield. To my surprise I was thrown out at second as I advanced. I went into the instant replay to figure out what happened.

I had to juke the second baseman and then the umpire! Had that not happened I would have been safe easily.

I've actually never seen this a single time. The gist I'm getting from your posts, though, is that the phenomenon can only be seen in the replays, and I very rarely watch replays.

I noticed both of them immediately as they happened, in RTTS the camera focuses on you.

I've only seen one occurrence that ever bothered me in about 3 years of playing.

It's just one of those parts of the sport that is kinda freakish and arbitrary when it happens and programming it into the game would probably hurt the game more than help it...no to mention be difficult to do properly.

I think what you really want to ask is "Why don't the fielders avoid the basepaths?" or "Why don't the runners avoid the fielders?"

Which just goes back to the programming or collision awareness.

I saw it a couple times last year. Both were in RTTS too... and both were between 1B and 2B. I have yet to see it this year, but I do agree that the runner is the one who is always trying to avoid the fielder.

Re: Baserunner interference...

I actually do this all the time...

As a pitcher I run to back up either the 3rd or 1st base and sometimes I get in the runners way and he has to run around me. The first time it happened I thought for sure I would be called on it, but it never happened.

However I do believe it has ever resulted in an out though. The game probably just compensates for it by speeding the runner up or slowing the thrown ball down.
