AVG denying access to programs?

I'm not sure what the hell my AVG is trying to do. Whenever I try to open Explorer and Spotify I am getting the alert for a threat detected. It thinks it's a "Trojan horse Dropper.Generic5.KVK"

I figured I see if anyone else has ever had this problem before trying to solve it myself Maybe this will finally be the motivation I need to reinstall Windows 7 on my laptop.

Oh geez I did "go to file" to see what it was and all of my executables came up as a threat.

Can you open any other browser or program without it being blocked?

Something like that happened to my girlfriend's computer. The only way to access programs was to right click on the icon and "run as administrator".
In hindsight probably not the safest thing to do.

I eventually was able to eliminate the virus using the steps in this link:

AVG get false positives some times. On my old external hard drive the autorun option to open the drive folder when its plugged in triggers AVG. Try updating AVG if you havent or just disable it until you need to scan.

I had the same exact thing happen to me. I had to restore my computer back to a previous date to get it running right again.

Re: AVG denying access to programs?

As previously noted it's likely a false positive. The viruses with "generic" in the name typically are. However to be sure I'd recommend uploading the file to this site which then does a scan with about 30 different antivirus programs and report back with your findings.

AVG has gotten worse over the past couple of years, and there are better free AV programs out there now. Though if you still are content with AVG you can manually stop it from scanning certain files, so it doesn't bother you anymore.
