NBA 2k12 help

Hi, i just picked up nba 2k12 today and i can't connect online. i hear you need a my2k account. and it never popped up for me. whenever i try to connect to online it says "The 2kSports server is not available at this time. Please try again later." is the server actually down? because i have not heard anyone say anything. because of this problem, i cannot go to my2k in features to create my account. please help!
