Re: Awakening the Sleeping Giant || A Washington Huskies Dynasty (NCAA 12)

Tempering Expectations in 2011

Seattle, WA -- It seems reasonable to think after losing a four year starter and first round draft pick at quarterback a team would not have too high of hopes entering a new season. While fans and the media may be taking the conservative approach, Washington head-coach Steve Sarkisian is not. "We feel like we have plenty of talent on the current roster and, with the right work ethic, and dedication we feel we will be very competitive this season." Said Sarkisian.

A once proud Washington program has entered many seasons over the last decade with little expected of them. Despite entering the 2010 season with high hopes, they were quickly dashed in Husky season opener in which they lost a heart-breaker at Brigham Young. They followed that up two weeks later with a humiliating 56-21 home loss to Nebraska. Washington scrambled to save the season by winning six games, and exacted revenge on Nebraska in a 19-7 Holiday Bowl win over the Huskers. However, a 7-6 season is not what fans or the players expected.

This season there will be a new man under center in 6'1" 195 sophomore dual-threat quarterback Keith Price. With an inexperienced quarterback in his first season a starter it is nice to have a running game to alleviate the pressure and keep defenses honest. Washing has just that in junior running-back Chris Polk. The preseason 1st team All Pac-12 member ran for 1,415 yards last season at a clip of 5.4 yards per carry and scored nine touchdowns.

Chris Polk (left) and Jermaine Kearse (righ) will be the headliners of the Husky offense this season.

Senior wide-receiver Jermaine Kearse will help Polk shoulder the load on offense and will provide Price with a versatile receiving threat. The 6'2" 210 pound senior from Lakewood is coming off a junior season in which he caught 62 passes for 1,005 yards and 12 touchdowns. Kearse joins Polk as a 1st team All Pac-12 selection.

Alameda Ta'Amu will lead a young and inexperienced Washington defense.

The Washington defense is a young one that will be led by 6'3" 337 behemoth defensive-tackle Alameda Ta'Amu. The Huskies newly released depth chart had five freshmen and/or sophomores number one, and four more as a back-up.

Regardless of what the fans think their 2011 Husky football team, the coaches and players believe they can compete and win a Pac-12 North title. At the very least, it should be interesting to see how this young team grows and comes together as the season progresses.

Re: Awakening the Sleeping Giant || A Washington Huskies Dynasty (NCAA 12)

Washington Survive San Diego State Comeback

Seattle, WA -- Ahead 38-7 in the third quarter it appeared Washington was going to cruise to a season opening blowout victory. San Diego State, however, had different ideas. With the ball and a 31 point lead is when things started to fall apart for Washington. First year starting quarterback Keith Price was not greeted with a warm welcoming by Aztec defense. Already with one interception on the day, Price would start a string of three straight possessions ending in an interception, two of which came backed up deep in San Diego State territory.

After putting up 26 unanswered points in just a little over 5:00 of game time, the Aztecs had turned a 38-7 blowout into a 38-33 battle. It was then, Washington went back to what had worked so well to build a 38-7 lead, Chris Polk. Polk's eight yard touchdown run with 3:29 to play, his fifth of the game, gave Washington some breathing room with a 45-33 lead. After a failed fourth down by San Diego State on the ensuing drive, Washington marched down the field and scored again. This time it was the struggling Price who ran the ball in fro three yards out to seal the game for the Huskies as they held a 52-33 lead with just 1:55 to play.

It was a steady diet of Chris Polk, Chris Polk, and some more Chris Polk that led the Huskies to victory. On the second play from scrimmage for Washington Polk broke free for a 95 yard touchdown run and never looked back. Polk finished the game with 31 carries for 357 yards and scored six touchdowns.

"The near collapse was my fault. I got away from what was working and tried to force the issue by involving the passing game. It was unsuccessful, obviously, and it nearly led to a major meltdown. There is zero blame to put on any of my players. The defense did not give up 33 points. I gave up 33 points by continually calling passing plays, which led to interceptions and fumbles, and led to San Diego State being in short field position the entire second half." -Steve Sarkisian
