Help with the Spread Option Offense

Hey guys, I'm trying to run a spread option offense this year the resembles Urban Meyer's spread option offense he ran with Tebow and now Mullen's that he runs with Relf.

I having trouble getting the zone read and option plays to work consistently, does anyone have any tips to improve my running with my QB.

I run well my running back but I am trying to have a legit dual threat QB.

What could I do to improve this?

Re: Help with the Spread Option Offense

I run the same thing except I use a very high tempo no huddle with it. My TE or FB is very versitile as is my SB (slot back) so I can move them around as needed. But to answer your question, I set my playbook up like this:

I only have 10 formations in my entire PB (minus goalline). I almost always come out in a formation usually with the HB in the backfield and FB lined up in a lead blocking position or flexed at the line. My play coming to the line 99% of the time is the zone read play.

From the line I establish a few things. 1.) Am I outmatched when it comes to blockers? I have 7 (including the QB who reads the end). 2.) Is there a blitz, if so I audible to something i think will take advantage like a quick pass, screen ect. I usually stay in the same formation though.

Another thing I do that has helped me is put all my audibles into one formation, I use an empty set to move the defense around as I see fit.

I have a deep pass, a QB draw, HB screen, WR bubble screen and an option. I look if its man, and if it is I usually audible to the quick draw from my empty set. So if it is man coverage the backers/ nickelbacks go out aswell. If the middle is wide open, its a draw. If there is still four down and a backer in the middle I run the option (effectivly audibling from an option, to an option). If they stay put, usually meaning zone and I have a number advantage to the outside I run the bubble.

It sounds complicated but in reality its just a numbers game, I can usually get a snap off usually within two or three seconds of the ball being set if I come to the line and see I have the numbers. If I dont, I'll find the best play to take advantage of what I think the defense is doing. There are still the occasion where a play just gets blown up, but thats usually when a d-lineman beats a double team.

I hope that helped a little bit anyways. Like I said, I come to the line with the zone option called right off the bat and go from there. This might sound dumb, but to run an efficient and productive offense you must know defense just as well if not better than your actual offense.
