WR Screens

Can anyone get these to work? I'm talking about the WR screens, not the mid screens. Mid screens work well, but the WR screen never works for me. It's like the O-linemen totally miss the CB, S, and OLB on that side of the play and by the time I throw the ball, one of those 3 guys is on my Wr for a pick or a quick tackle for a loss. From what I can tell, it looks like the O-linemen don't come out far enough into the flats to block which leaves one of those 3 guys unblocked. I spent the better part of an hour in practice mode and only got this to work a few times and that was only because my WR broke the first tackle. Does this play ever work for anyone? If so, how do you do it?

Re: WR Screens

Re: WR Screens

Check for zone, if not dump it or run, it is a one second read, just drop back one step and throw or run.
Bubble screen are awesome if you get zone coverage too.
I never get negative yards/less than 3 on screens, unless they user the corner.

Re: WR Screens

Maybe I'm holding the ball too long or something then because the defense is playing zone a lot. I watch the CB drop back into zone, then he realizes what's happening and comes in hard towards my WR. He always comes in free because the Olinemen aren't far enough into the flat to block him.

Re: WR Screens

Run a WR screen and throw it to someone on the other side, usually picks up a 1st down

Huh? The only other route on the play I'm trying to do has the WR on the other side running a streak and he's ALWAYS covered lol.

I tried doing what you other guys suggested and started throwing the ball right after the snap and that just results in an incomplete pass or an int to the CB that' jumping the route. There were some rare occasions that the WR actually acted like he wanted to catch the ball and actually went and got the ball and had a minimal gain. I think I'm just gonna have to give up on this play. I'm just not seeing how this is supposed to work.

Exactly what he said. I get this work very well when it is a zone coverage.

Just do this. Once you see the DB drop back into a zone throw the ball. If you see the DB jump on the WR thow it to the receiver on the other side. I usually hot route him to do a slant.
