Internet service?

Will Internet service ever be free? If everything goes digital wouldn't it need to be free or dirt cheap?

Re: Internet service?

I think it would be quite the opposite.

But, first, what do you mean by everything going digital? Isn't everything already digital?

No, it will never be free. Hell water isn't free. Surprised we don't have an air bill yet.

I don't want to make this political or anything but, isn't there some talk about the government providing internet to lower income families (similar to welfare, food stamps, etc.)? If that ever happens then, I most definitely believe that internet service will be on the rise.

No......the bill was to allow high speed access to the rural areas of the USA. But they weren't going to lower the price, just have broadband available in rural areas.

Because in the past, if you didn't live in a major city or any place with a population higher then 40,000 people, chances was Comcast, Verizon and other broadband providers wouldn't even OFFER it to your area.

So you were stuck with either dial up or satellite. Heck it was just 4 years ago did Comcast come into Vermont and have broadband lines everywhere here.

Before then, you only had dial up or satellite internet.

Re: Internet service?

maybe in some fantasy star trek world where there's no money, but internet will only get more expensive as they introduce more tiers for increasing usage.

The giant ISP's are even lobbying hard to prevent municipal broadband and wifi that's cheaper and faster than what they provide from popping up in various states. Free market wins...

Re: Internet service?

In the short term it will get more expensive as the big companies try to squeeze us dry but once the dam breaks it will be a lot cheaper than were paying now. Other more impoverishment nations have much faster internet at much cheaper prices.
