As a complete guess completely out of left field I'd say that they probably interfered with the dreads and looked bad so they took them out.

Yeah, I miss them too.

If they interfered with the dreads, you'd figure they'd just have the dreads override the neck pad like it does with the neck roll.

Why does it always feel like one step forward, one step back? Sheesh.

Because neck pads are lame and very few college players wear them anymore.
