Re: Black Shoes, Basic Blues, No Names, All Game: Penn State Football

The 2010 season for the Penn State Nittany Lions began in a way that hasn't happened since 1910. Robert Bolden became the first true freshman quarterback to start the opening game 100 years since the times of Shorty Miller. Bolden led the team to a 44-14 victory over the Penguins of Youngstown State. The second game of the season saw Penn State battle the #1 Alabama Crimson Tide. Turnovers and an inability to finish off drives led to a 24-3 loss. The Lions delivered the team's first shutout since the 2009 match-up against the Kent State Golden Flashes. The Nittany Lions edged out Temple behind the strong running of Evan Royster who gained 187 yards on 26 carries.
Against the Iowa Hawkeyes the redzone woes continued as they were only able to convert one field goal on three trips as Iowa defeated them 24-3. The Nittany Lions suffered their first defeat ever to Illinois at Beaver Stadium, they gave up 282 rushing yards while allowing the Illini to dominate the time of possession with over 38 minutes in a 33-13 loss. The first victory in Big Ten Conference play came against Minnesota. After Bolden was forced to leave the game with an apparent concussion. Kevin Newsome and Matt McGloin took over at quarterback, with McGloin completing his first two career TD passes to Evan Royster.
Joe Paterno got his 399th win, while Matt McGloin got his first as a starting quarterback against conference foe Michigan. The same game Evan Royster surpassed Curt Warner as the all-time Penn State leading rusher by running for 150 yards and 2 TDs.
After speculation on who would be the starting quarterback, Rob Bolden, was given the nod after recovering from the concussion he sustained. However, after being hit hard in the first quarter was forced to leave the game with McGloin taking over. After trailing the Wildcats by 21 points late in the 2nd quarter, Penn State made a comeback and dominated the rest of the way. Royster and freshman Silas Redd both ran for over 130 yards while McGloin completed 4 TD passes. The win marked Joe Paterno's 400th victory as a head coach, a feat that will probably never be repeated.
After outplaying the Ohio State Buckeyes in the first half of the game and leading by 11 points, the Nittany Lions feel apart in the second half with 2 McGloin interceptions and a failure to stop the Ohio State rushing attack the Lions gave up 35 unanswered points in a 38-14 loss. Penn State scored two touchdowns on their first two drives of the game and led by 14 until the Hoosiers managed to tie the game at 24 in the third quarter. The Lions used an Andrew Dailey blocked punt and James Van Fleet's subsequent return to gain the momentum and carry them to a 17 unanswered point victory. Although Penn State outgained the Michigan State Spartans they still suffered a 6 point loss mostly because they only managed to score 3 points in the first three quarters.
The 2010 season culminated in a defeat in the 2011 Outback Bowl by the hands of the Florida Gators, during Urban Meyer's last game as the Gator's head coach. McGloin threw a school-record 5 interceptions in the game. The 37-24 loss ended the Nittany Lions season at a 7-6 mark, something they hope to improve upon this upcoming year.
