Re: FIFA 12 Producer Video: Vision

Thanks for posting this. I'm honestly really excited by this video. Hopefully it will make midfielders like Xavi and Fabregas feel more individual, as they are great passers in the real game.

EA's new attempt at replicating player vision.

FIFA 12 will introduce a new technology called "Vision Map", where the main element is that all players have a vision attribute that determines their abilities to see and react on opportunities. The technology effects, as far as I know, the players accuracy and the CPU's ability to make plays. That is, if you (human controlled) attempt a pass to a player outside the vision map, then it will reduce the players accuracy and CPU players will never attempt a pass to a player outside their vision, because they don't see the opportunity.

EA Sports just released a short tech blog explaining how it works in FIFA 12.

I think this new technology should be implemented in Madden as fast as possible, as I am one of the few that miss the effect the vision cone had on gameplay. It could be used as a way to better capture awareness, vision and play recognizing into one element and it could be tied to both natural ability, but also experience.

Initially, you could use this technology to make difference between rookie quarterbacks and veteran quarterbacks. That way, veteran QBs could still be very useful as they would see opportunities and be more accurate than if you had a rookie QBs under center. Additionally, it could also prevent QBs from being accurate during deep drop backs or scrambles, where they don't keep their eyes down field. For instance, the Philip Rivers play from e3, where he drops back 20 yards to his own end zone and magically throws a 60 yard bomb to a receiver down the field or the Big Ben play, where he throws an accurate pass to a receiver straight behind him.

Down the line, it could also be implemented for other positions as well. Vision for rookie RBs could mean that they are more likely to hit the first hole because they don't have the vision to see all the linebackers or safeties, while veteran RBs are more patient because they see the safety coming down and know a better hole will open up. Elite and veteran safeties have better vision of the field and can see receivers breaking on their routes and opportunities for interceptions happening much better than inexperienced safeties. Experienced offensive linemen are better at picking up blitzing linebackers or defensive stunts etc. etc.

With FIFA 12 showing the way for this new vision based element, I hope Tiburon will take a closer look and try to implement it in future Maddens.

Re: EA's new attempt at replicating player vision.

Sounds good and is sorely needed.

NM did something very similar with Backbreaker in that they gave every single player on the field a "vision cone" so that they would only react to things that they are actually looking at. It doesn't work flawlessly, as you will still see defenders make plays on passes that they aren't facing, but it does work a good majority of the time, and is much better than Madden with all the psychic stuff running rampant for offense and defense.

If this tech actually works, than this will be huge.

I'd also like to point out for those that keep saying that new tech never gets introduced in Madden, and starts out in titles that people don't care as much about, like NHL, that there have been several innovative experiments in FIFA, which is the real cash cow of EA Sports.

I hope that some day in the very near future we see some of these types of things originate in Madden, so we don't have to spend years praying that they finally find their way into Madden eventually.

Thirded, for the reasons stated above. It's been awhile since I last played FIFA, but this feature makes it much more sim and appealing.
