Judge rules against the BCS enforces rule change
February 23rd, 2011

The judge overseeing the case of Shurtleff v. The BCS has ruled in favor of Shurtleff. However the sentence will not be ushering in a new playoff system for the Bowl Subdivision of Division One, rather it will feature a new relegation system that will provide one of two things in order to allow for a more fluid experience. The first of which is basis for which a team will remain in an Automatic Qualifying conference and the basis by which a conference will retain it's Automatic Qualifier status. While certain conferences can consider themselves safe, some see themselves on the fringe.

The safe conferences which will retain any form of evaluation for the upcoming ten seasons will be the Big Ten (12), the Pacific Twelve and the Southeastern Conference. The three Automatic conferences have sported solid performances without much decay in overall presence. The three fringe Automatic Qualifying conferences will see themselves evaluated every five years, starting after this upcoming season. The fringe conferences of course being the Atlantic Coast Conference, the Big East and oddly the Big Twelve. The Big Twelve is on the verge of implosion after losing both Nebraska and Colorado their membership dwindled well below the needed for a conference championship.

The Big Twelve is also rumored to being at risk of losing the Texas Longhorns and the Oklahoma Sooners may find themselves jumping ship if Texas decides to leave. The Big Twelve is the best of the fringe conferences with Texas and Oklahoma staying put and several other contenders starting to rise, unless they see more movement they should be alright and retain their status soundly enough to retain automatic qualifier status.

In order to gain or maintain the 'AQ' status the conference has to stay in the top six (averaged) of the following categories.

W-L Percentage:
Out of Conference W-L Percentage:
Bowl Game Winning Percentage:

Other factors that can become a true factor is the highest ranked member and quality wins versus other conferences. Another statement was that if the extremely rare and odd situation that a team plays an opponent in a bowl game from the same conference (which should never happen) than the game will not come to apply in the Bowl game winning percentage.

A factor that should affect the more current outlook of the college landscape will be the new system of relegation and gains. It will provide a more fluid conference landscape while maintaining some of the old rivalries and faces. One bad year will not knock out a team as the mediation session between conference commissioners, the BCS committee and the judge overseeing the case have reached that if over a given span a team shows skill on the field and on the recruiting front a team will be promoted, either at the loss of another team or adding a new member.

The first slated moves of Texas Christian to the Big East and a few other select moves, will still carry through. The judge has not put any interest of preventing any teams from establishing themselves in the NCAA. First round of evaluations will be looming after this initial season and some of it may spell disaster for members of certain conferences. The Big Twelve is highly at risk of implosion and falling to anonymity. The Big East seems to be on the seat of Automatic Qualifiers and the Atlantic Coast conference is by no means safe.

This upcoming season has a lot looming and as the face of the NCAA looks to be leaning towards four super conferences the only general consensus among heads of conferences is that the 'elite' conferences should all have a Championship game, which means more teams getting a shot with the Big East greatly needing expansion.

After poor showing, offensive coordinator is fired at Wake Forest

Memories of the Atlantic Conference Championship season of 2006 when the Wake Forest Demon Deacons went off to a 11-3 season that ended in the schools first and only BCS appearance a tough loss to the Louisville Cardinals. The fall off seemed slow at first but quickly became radical. Leading to the last seasons fall apart. The terrible showing included a terrible bottom ten performance in the pass attack finishing with only 143.8 passing yards per game on average. Good for sixth worst in the NCAA and averaging only 22.8 points per game in the bottom fourth of the NCAA. The whole team needs a new look but the head coach Jim Grobe had done enough to hold onto the job even though he remains on the hot seat.

The offense at Wake Forest is still projected to be one of the worst offenses in the Atlantic Coast even worst than what the Duke Blue Devils are expected to field. Something that is not easily done. After a last place finish last season the Demon Deacons have everywhere to go from here but it will start with the new offensive coordinator. A relative unknown, Tyler Starks a twenty seven year old head coach from Belvidere, Illinois will be taking over the offense.

The Wake Forest school officials will have a separate press conference fully introducing the new coach and will have a long way to go from here. He will have to put in a new system and work on the recruiting duties. "We have full confidence that he will help lead this team into a new direction, a great one. We may have a championship in our future. He has a terrific work ethic and will only expect the best out of our recruits. We will have a release later on, closer to the start of the season where he will address the fans. We went out on a limb here but we will not disappoint, we have full faith in Starks." Spoke head coach Jim Grobe in a very short press conference that announced the deal. Keep an eye out for more news of this young coordinator. He could end up making waves in the NCAA

Wake Forest 2011 Preview: A look at the backfield

QB:
Tanner Price (SO): 137-241 (56.8) : 1349 Passing Yards: 7 TD - 8 INT
Skylar Jones (SR): 13-27 (48.1) : 119 Passing Yards: 0 TD - 1 INT : 12 Rushes - 41 Yards
Ted Statchitas (JR): 12-23 (52.2) : 131 Passing Yards : 0 TD - 1 INT : 35 Rushing Yards - 171 Rushing Yards - 2 TD
Brandon Cross (SO): 2-7 (28.6) : 5 Passing Yards : 9 Rushes - 31 Rushing Yards

It was a disappointing season to say the least for the Wake Forest Demon Deacons aerial attack. The team finished ranked 114th in the NCAA or simply put, the sixth worst in the NCAA. It was an embarrassment and with the starting quarterback being a freshman, it does give it four full years with an opportunity to pull out and right his career. Yet as of now he has not done much to showcase his talents. Tanner Price hailing from Texas came to Wake Forest with hopes of bringing the team together. The team didn't respond to the freshman who played to his potential. Price needs to work on his passing mechanics and his top end speed. Price has shown the ability to hit top speed fairly quickly. Yet his top speed is far from impressive. Rather than being similar to other top quarterbacks, it is closer to a pocket passer. His passes lack the polished zip that top end quarterbacks possess and needs. He can't send the ball too far downfield either. He may not be the answer for the position. Yet he is a viable source of production. The Demon Deacons have nothing better. Skylar Jones isn't a mid major starter let alone an automatic qualifier starter. Out of the few passes he has thrown he managed to toss a pick and his stats on the ground aren't impressive either. This group has a lot of work to do and it's yet to be seen how Starks plans to use Price or Jones in the upcoming season.

HB:
Josh Harris (SO) : 125 Rushes - 720 Yards - 7 TD : 8 Rec - 69 Receiving Yards
Brandon Pendergrass (SR) : 257 Rushes - 1042 Yards - 8 TD: 29 Rec - 192 Yards
Ben Emert (SO) : N/A
Tyler Jackson (FR) : N/A
Orville Reynolds (FR) : N/A

Only two running backs on the roster have any college experience, Pendergrass is in his senior year and continues to only fall further as each year progresses. Pendergrass has seen his overall numbers fall huge as each year continues. Last year his carries hit as low as the twenties. Where as, Josh Harris has had a solid freshman year, he needs to work on getting free from tackles. His moves are lackluster but his speed his phenomenal. As well his hands leave a lot to be desired. He missed any production in terms of receptions when he had seven games without registering a single receptions and ontop of that there was another game where he totaled negative yardage in the games. Aside from that he is the best of this offense. Starks will have no trouble coaching up Josh who has all the talent in the world, being only a sophomore he has a great career ahead of him and Pendergrass offers a nice backup to mix things up and allow him to catch a breath. This will be where the clear majority of where the offense will come from. Expect him to become a fan favorite, he may be all worth cheering for on this side of the ball.

FB:
Tommy Bohanon (JR) - 33 Rushes for 128 Yards : 19 Receptions for 141 yards and 1 TD
Roger Khouri (SO) - N/A

Not too much to say here, Bohanon isn't anything overly spectacular, he is a serivceable fullback, he isn't an impact blocker, he isn't capable of running over linebackers or defensive lineman like other stronger running backs, he also isn't a runner or receiver. He is average in every aspect of the game. He won't wow anyone, but he won't make anyone cringe at his play. Yet he really won't make any huge plays. Average is the best word to describe Bohanon. Not much can be said about Khouri. Khouri has no college playing experience, but he seems to be a lesser version of Bohanon, sub par but well rounded.

Wake Forest 2011 Season Preview: A look at the receiving corp

WR:
Chris Givens (JR) 80 Catches for 1143 Receiving Yards and 12 TD : 31 Rushes for 151 Rushing Yards and 2 TD
Devon Brown (SR) 110 Catches for 1107 Receiving Yards and 8 TD : 59 Rushes for 191 Yards and 3 TD
Danny Dembry (SR) 10 Catches for 118 Yards and 1 TD
Michael Campanaro (SO) 10 Catches for 107 Yards : 29 Rushes for 123 Rushing yards and 1 TD
Terrence Davis (JR) 4 Catches for 20 yards and 1 TD
Sherman Ragland (FR) N/A
Brandon Terry (FR) N/A
Matt James (FR) N/A

The clear leader of this group would be Chris Givens (unrelated to NFL wide receiver, David Givens). As a junior he will be expected to be the leader and help Tanner Price in his second year. Givens has been the goto receiver for the squad and he is the big play maker that they need to help Price. His speed is top end and it may lead into an NFL career, the psychology major is also very capable on the field and of his surroundings. He is somewhat lacking in his hands, but is slightly above average compared to the average collegiate receiver. Devon Brown will take a little pressure off of Givens but he will never amount to anything more than the second wide receiver. There will be no position battle this offseason, it is Chris Given's job to lose and if he wants a career in the NFL he is going to have to shine and make Tanner Price look good. Dembry has been buried on weak Wake Forest receiver corps and will at best be a slot receiver even then he might lose that to Michael Campanero. Campanero had a better season last year on the ground than he did in the aerial attack. Campanero has the speed and ability to hit top speed that Wake Forest absolutely loves and being a sophomore, he could turn into a great receiver for this group. Especially since it has been hinted that new Offensive Coordinator loves speed.

TE:
Cameron Ford (SR) 22 Catches for 248 Receiving Yards
Andrew Parker (SR) 22 Catches for 233 Receiving Yards and 2 Touchdowns
Neil Basford (FR) N/A

The tight end position will be something that will need to be heavily recruited this season. Ford and Parker are both graduating seniors and neither will leave a massive hole to fill but Neil Basford was a barely recruited prospect that is mainly being kept on in order to keep some youth on the roster. Ford is a balanced tight end, he won't stun anyone with his hands or blocking but at least he can do his job somewhat well. Parker is more of a blocker despite having more touchdowns than Ford (2 to 0).

Wake Forest 2011 Season Preview : Offensive Line

LT:
Dennis Godfrey (SR)
Steven Chase (SO)
Devin Bolling (SO)

LG:
Ryan Britt (SR)
Daniel Blitch (FR)

C:
Garrick Williams (JR)
Chase Raines (JR)

RG:
Gabe Irby (JR)
Michael Hoag (JR)
Whit Barnes (SO)

RT:
Doug Weaver (SR)
Colin Summers (SO)
Dylan Intemann (FR)

This unit gave up 25 sacks just a year ago, at only 2 a game that isn't horrible but with Tanner Price being young and the average amount of rushing yards gained the team is looking for a much better performance and Coach Starks has the talent. Center, Garrick Williams is a great player to have anchoring the center of the line and Doug Weaver is an outside pick to be selected in the NFL draft this upcoming season. The positions have a solid group of youth and 'veteran' talent to keep the Deacons stocked. The left side is a little weak and will need to be addressed this season through recruiting but this line is by no means terrible. The Deacons will need maximum production out of ever lineman in order to pull themselves out of the ACC basement. The offensive starts here and it could end here. They need to protect Price and open holes for the running backs to get through.

Re: Leading the way through the new age of College Football {--

The new leader of the offense

(Winston-Salem, NC) - Fans of the Deacons have been anxiously awaiting what the season would hold for them. After the firing of their offensive coordinator the new one seemed to come out of nowhere to fill the hole. Tyler Starks (27) of Belvidere, Illinois became the newest addition to the coaching staff when the short term high school coach accepted a contract to coach the Wake Forest Demon Deacons. It is needless to say his work will be cut out for him. Inheriting one of the worst offenses in the NCAA is not ideal, he is gaining some youth in players such as Tanner Price, but the offensive line leaves some fear for this year and beyond. The Deacons have very little depth in terms of age. Most of the talented players are graduating this season or next and the difference between starter and reserve is borderline massive.

Why do the staff at Wake Forest believe he has what it takes to turn this program back into a winner? In just four years after receiving his bachelors in Coaching and Psychology, he accepted a job to coach his hometown Belvidere Buccaneers to three consecutive undefeated seasons with one of the best offenses in the state of Illinois. That was the little farm team that was lucky to put together two or three winning games just a few years ago, that run included two deep runs into the state playoffs and one 4A state championship. His run to fame was obscured by his location as a local celebrity of sorts, his players were motivated and he developed their talent.

The Demon Deacons had to look hard to find the Northern Illinois native but when they did, they might've found the diamond in the rough. As a head coach his offense was the best side of the ball, where he instilled a spread style offense. The offense utilized a lot of quarterback movement and a very fast paced game. In a press conference earlier today, Starks quoted on saying "I want to give the Oregon Ducks a run for their money when it comes to speed. I want to turn this team into one of the fastest." His philosophies were simple. If you were fast you were on offense and he developed you there. If you were strong you could be a lineman or on the defense.

The primary formations of his offenses were shotguns that utilized usually three or four receivers on the field with the occasional tight end. A split end formation that allowed for a fullback, the pistol formation which was popularized by the Colin Kapernick offense at Nevada, and a one back formation that was mainly used only early in the game to feel out opposing offenses.

"The offense I will be running at Wake Forest will be similar to that I ran at Belvidere. Fast quarterbacks are a must and Tanner Price will fit into that mold. We have a speedy halfback and a decent group of receivers that will help us keep the ball moving forwards. That's my job, we keep moving forward and I am a happy man. We will keep the ball moving fast at all times, I will have these boys running sprints until they can run the no huddle like it was nothing. This offense is going to be exciting." Spoke Starks during his interview.

Although he will not be having any say on the defensive side of the ball, his defenses were run with mainly 4-2-5 and 3-3-5 style defenses based on the offenses he faced with a 3-4 formation thrown in for the middle of the game when the secondary needed a breather. His defense was solid but no where near as dynamic and deadly as the offense.

"I'm not going to lie, I was surprised when you asked that. My defensive systems seemed odd sense my defensive priorities were always on power, but when you had three or four strong lineman, two or three strong line backers out there it allows your secondary a lot of freedom to throw their bodies around and make some big plays. It worked beautifully, but I have no doubt that our defense will be run to the best of its abilities." Answered Tyler Starks during the interview earlier today when asked on his defensive philosophies.

"It was a hard few days but that was what we needed. We can't sit around and get better. We all need to work hard and get better. It's the only way we can start winning again. I don't want to be known as the quarterback of the 1-11 Demon Deacons, I wanna be remembered for being that guy that won a bowl game, a heisman, a national championship. Anything is better than last year." Spoke a motivated Tanner Price in a post practice interview with a local Winston-Salem news station.

There is definitely an aura around the school that has been missing in recent years. The electricity in the air is there, this team may not be pulling into the top twenty-five this year but they should be exciting. Starks has a lot of work ahead of him, but in this town, on that football field, he has people believing.
