I just got NHL 11, should I download the patch?

I plan on only playing BPM. I heard that the patch screws up your XP. Is the gameplay fine if I don't download the patch, or do I have to download it to fix some major bugs?

I'm not much of a BPM player so maybe someone else can comment on this XP issue you mentioned.
