Here are some things that I feel need to be fine-tuned to improve the gameplay:
- The ball needs to be more tangible - simple and plain. Many passes go directly through defenders body parts and trying to steal is rather useless unless you are anticipating a pass. I feel like 2k11 doesn't reward the user for timing a swipe at the opposing player's unprotected dribble or having enough sense to bat the ball away when an opposing big man is posting up or in the paint with the ball low.
- The out-of-bounds area needs to have its imaginary forcefield removed. It's really unfortunate that players can continually drive the baseline with little risk of stepping out of bounds. Defensively forcing a ball-handler to that boundary has little reward.
- This game should better emphasize space and body collision. Sure, the developers added some collision animations when going for an inside shot, and the Y-button spin is often met with a traveling violation call. However, the hop-step for example is often met with success when there is little room to make such move. Also, gaining position down low needs to be harder by perhaps increasing player physicality. Passing to the interior must be balanced.
- The foul system should be revamped so that the calls are a bit more consistent. Drawing the foul is a huge part of the NBA game, and aggressively attacking the rim is advocated. Often times, dramatic collision animations are met with no call. While I think contact does not always warrant a foul call, players seem to be getting legitimately hacked on many of these animations.
- The blocking system needs to be reworked some as well. Often times, animations play too much of a factor in blocks occuring. Players don't intend on making a certain move, but because the game just feels like rewarding the defense with a block, the offensive players' movements sometimes get changed in mid-air.
- The close-out speed on shooters may need to be lowered some so that ball movement is better promoted. Certain shot animations are a little slow compared to others so decreasing the close-out speed may help compensate for the time difference.
2k11 was a step up from 2k10, and I don't want to undermine the developers' work, but I do think significant changes can still be made. Any comments are welcome.
