PYS 2011 - Hitting Tips

Any hitting tips out there? My Carps are 0-4, I'm averaging about 8-10 hits/gm but mostly singles. I usually never use the power sweet zone. What are others theories on that?

Settings:
Normal difficulty
Real batters eye

Well, as in real hitting, timing + sweet spot = hits....timing + sweet spot + player attributes = hits, doubles, triples & HR's...(that depends on players strengths).....timing + sweet spot + power = lots of xtra base hits.

what I'm trying to say is you should try to get to know your hitters and base runners strengths and weaknesses and try to make the most of it. Try to recognize the situation and hit accordingly......ie, if you have a good baserunner on and a good contact hitter at plate.....hit & run....know which players are good hitting opposite field and go the other way......if the player is feeling good (red smiley face) and has some pop....don't be afraid to hit with power....etc.

You have the Carps...right? Soyogi is your leadoff and he's one of the few players that have great speed and some power.....Hingashide I would never hit for power.....Hirose can HIT anything in any direction with and without power.....Kurihara is same as Hirose but with alot more power....Spiderman Akamatsu has speed and some power but not good average hitter. and so forth.

I would recommend sticking with the Carps until you "master" that team and that will help you with getting to know the other teams alot easier. And again, don't be afraid to use power with the hitters that have some....specially if their health "face" is red. and hit to opposite field with hitters that can.

sometimes (VERY RARE) you will hit a HR with a player that has little power because you hit the ball perfectly square on the sweet spot...but other than that you have to get them extra bases on your own.....one last thing .....remember to tap the 4 shoulder buttons when you get a hit, that might help you get an exta base if the player is a good baserunner.......hope that helps.

Well, you're doing awesome getting 8-10 hits with real batting point. But if your difficulty is normal the CPU is probably throwing alot of strikes. There's no shame in using normal batting point, this will allow you to increase pitch speed & difficulty (try middle speed / hard minus difficulty) and you can square up on the ball better.

Training is your friend, learn all the batting practice settings and mess around with power and opp field swing. You can also use it to scout the next pitcher you'll face in a game as well.

And solid contact swings result in line drives & doubles in the gap. If you're lucky enough to hit a home run it will probably be right down the line.

Solid Power swings increase trajectory, so if you want to go after the wall that's what you'll need to use.

Thanks guys will implement a lot of this. Sounds a lot like the show with using training to scout the next pitcher.

It just seemed the CPU hits HR on low and outside pitches sometimes so I figured I need some power swings to start.

Real batter eye isn't so bad once you see the initial movement. From there it's moving the bat to where you anticipate the ball. I imagine with power swings it'll be even tougher.

I also typically let pitches go when they pitcher nails his release spot (ie a very small ball) and wait for the meatball exclamations. Do most do that?

Loving the game. I do mash the buttons after a hit. Baserunning is tricky for me as it seems it doesn't register an advance until the person is near the base, which has cost me some runs.

power swings are tougher....but in time you will get the hang of it.

the very small ball thing....it depends what the count is and the location.....i try to go with my batters ability and timing.......although hitting a perfect pitch is maybe the hardest thing to do in this game....specially if it's located well....it can be done.....

as for base running ....if you're trying to hustle .....just hold down the triangle with thumb as you're tapping all 4 shoulder buttons.....to return to a base switch your thumb from triangle to circle .....have fun

Don't forget how powerful a sac bunt is, especially with weaker offensive teams. If you're playing with a weak lineup, there's a higher chance of hitting that dribbler to an infielder which usually leads to a double play. So why not bunt your teammate to scoring position? It's how I finally won with the Chiba Lotte after a handful of losses!

I'm def a Bill James disciple, sorry no small ball as mathematically it doesn't make sense. Surprised Japan hasn't followed this advice from Mr. James.

Well, in Japan, small ball is THE meal ticket....and that is why their product is so great and they are the 2 time (and reigning) WBC champions....remember the name in front of the jersey is always most important, that's why the name on the back takes a backseat.....

plus, making 35% of your shots in basketball, 35% passer rating in football or 35% of saves as a goalie in hockey and you be out of a job soon....but 35% (.350) hitting avg. in baseball and you are immortal....although "mathematically it doesn't make sense"....
