Rapid Stats Baseball Greatest Team Ever Tournament

Hi everyone!

I ran a Greatest Team of the Century Tournament at the Rapid Stats Baseball website to compare with the OS Greatest Team Tournament. Hope you enjoy reading about the results.

Brett

TOURNAMENT RULES:

- Took top 10 teams from every year from 1903-2002, played 162-game regular season.
- Top 4 from each season advanced, played another 162-game season against each other to determine each season's champion.
- For each decade (1903-12, 1913-22, etc.) played off the 10 yearly champions against one another in the same format, top 4 advance, decade champ then crowned in 162-game playoff.
- 10 decade champs advance to century championship, played off in same way, top 4 advance, Century Champ then crowned.

Regular Season and Decade Tournaments

1903-12: The 1906 Cubs finished first in the regular season, but were upset by the Pirates in the four-team seasonal playoff. In fact, the Cubs finished 4th behind the Pirates, White Sox and Giants. The 1906 Pirates did not advance to the decade Final 4, which was won by the 1909 Cubs, who beat the 1909 Pirates by 7 games in the 4-team seasonal playoffs.

1913-22: The 1919 Reds finished 4th in the regular season, but prevailed in the seasonal playoffs, beating the Yankees by 5 games. They then advanced to the decade Final 4, where they were nosed out (by 2 games) by the 1917 White Sox for the decade title.
1923-32: The 1927 Yankees finished 3rd in the regular season, but then cruised to victory by 11 games over the Pirates in the seasonal playoffs. They advanced to the decade Final 4, and then outlasted the 1929 A's by two games to win the decade title.

1933-42: The 1939 Yankees finished 1st in the regular season, but were then upset by the Cards in the seasonal playoffs. The Cards did not advance to the decade Final 4, which was won by the 1937 Yankees, by 7 games over the 1942 Yankees.

1943-52: The 1944 Cards finished 1st in the regular season, but were then upset by the Tigers in the seasonal playoffs. The Tigers did not advance to the decade Final 4, which was won narrowly (by 3 games) by the 1948 Indians over the 1946 Red Sox.

1953-62: The 1954 Indians finished 2nd in the regular season, but were beaten by the Yankees in the seasonal playoffs. The Yankees did advance to the decade Final 4, but were beaten by the Cinderella 1957 White Sox.

1963-72: The 1969 Orioles finished 3rd in the regular season, but won the seasonal playoff by 18 games. They advanced to the decade Final 4 along with two other O's clubs - 1964 and 1971 - along with the 1965 Twins. The 1971 Orioles prevailed by a game over the Twins for the decade title.

1973-82: Big upset here, as the 1975 Reds did not even advance to the seasonal playoffs. Neither did the Red Sox. The 1975 Royals nosed out the Orioles by a game in the seasonal playoffs, but didn't advance to the decade Final 4. The decade champ was the 1980 Royals, who finished with the same record as the 1979 Orioles - the computer broke the tie in favor of KC.

1983-92: The 1986 Mets finished third in the regular season, and were then nosed out by 2 games by the mighty Phillies for the seasonal title. The 1986 Phillies then miraculously advanced to the decade Final 4, only to beaten out by the 1991 Pirates for the decade title.

1993-2002: The 2001 Mariners finished 1st in the regular season and won the seasonal playoffs handily. However, they did not advance to the decade Final 4, which was won by the 1996 Braves, who ran down the 2002 A's, who led for most of the playoff.
