Movement on a 4-seam Fastball

I've always wondered if the movement stat on a 4-seam baseball actually helped. It doesn't ever show the pitch moving in a game but obviously some pitchers will have a straight 4-seam and others will have a rising, sinking, or tailing 4-seamer.

Anyone heard definitively whether it helps to raise the 4-seamer's movement?

Re: Movement on a 4-seam Fastball

This is my observations.

From messing around with RTTS, and from my Braves Chise.

The more movement stat you have the more it moves.

What I mean by this is:

When a 4 seamer in game is pitched up in the zone it rises, down in the zone it dives down, and in the middle of the zone, it tends to be flat.

If the 4 seamer stat is higher, it rises and drops more. Which causes you to get on top of it for a grounder, or under it for a pop up. While if it's flat like in the middle of the zone someone can get good wood on it.

If the stat is too low, the 4 seamer will be flat like in the middle of the zone both high and low also, which means its just a fancy faster meatball.

Once again my observations and opinions, not saying I'm right or wrong.

(And I'm sorry my grammar is so bad right now. I just pulled an all nighter cramming 6 chapters of chemistry and just took the test... now to write a ten page paper... least i have the show to play, [a inning here and there between my paper])

LOL @ rising fastballs

They have moving 4-seam fastballs in the game and they are called RFB (running fast ball)

4-seamers do not sink or cut

Re: Movement on a 4-seam Fastball

The 4 seamers don't move at all. The movement stat is just how hard/easy it is to hit the that pitcher's 4 seamer solidly. So essentially for the 4 Seamer, think of the "movement" stat as effectiveness.

Re: Movement on a 4-seam Fastball

I think movement has to do with the frequency that the pitch is swung on and missed. The greater the movement the more of a chance that a player will swing and miss. I've noticed this not only with the fastball but with other pitches too....thats why it's secondary effect is the k/9. Just my thought.

Re: Movement on a 4-seam Fastball

Honestly they simply need a "deceptiveness" rating. The more challenging a pitch is to pick up, the tougher the pitcher will be to hit.
