Balancing hitting sliders

Thought it might be a good idea to get some discussion on the aspect of user hitting in mlb 2k11.

These are the basic struggles of a slidermaker when it comes to hitting:

1. Getting the right number of home runs.
-This means that you let the bigger bats hit their 30-40, but still maintain the possibility of the lesser bats to get their 5-10. So far, I haven't seen a single set that has been able to do that.

2. Get the right amount of hits per game.
-This means, on average, 8-9 per game. However, it doesn't mean 9 hits every game. I haven't been able to get a slider set where it's possible to have a 4 hit game and then a 12 hit game.

3. Get the strikeout numbers right.
-I recently had a set using contact 30, power 70, cpu pitch success 85 where I would get around 9 hits per game, had 7 homers through 9 games, but struck out every 4 ABs.


So, here are what seems to be the relevant sliders for user hitting:

User contact
User Power
CPU pitch success
CPU pitch composure

There HAS to be some balance between these 4 sliders that will give you decent results.

User batting 35/70 and cpu batting 40/65 has yielded this over the past 5 games.

User Hits : 14 - 3 -10 - 11 - 6
User Runs : 7 - 2 - 6 - 5 - 1
User Batting K's : 11 - 5 - 8 - 7 - 7

That's an average of 8.8 hits, 4.2 runs, and 7.6 K's for the user.

CPU Hits : 9 - 11 - 6 - 8 - 11
CPU Runs : 3 - 4 - 0 - 7 - 1
CPU Batting K's : 12 - 6 - 9 - 4 - 3

That's an average of 9 hits, 3 runs, 6.8 k's for the user.

I was 4-1 over that stretch of 5 games. The biggest problem I see is the CPU out hitting me but scoring 1.2 runs per game less. It's due to a lack of power, I'm hitting more HR's and 2B's and the cpu's hits are all singles. I'm hoping that bumping power up by 5 points to 70 will improve the CPU's power hitting. It did so far in the last game they had 11 hits and 5 runs, several doubles and a triple. I just forgot to post that game to my blog.

I'm not sure what the contact slider does. The power slider seems to have a much bigger impact on whether or not the bat makes contact with the ball.

I scrapped my slider set entirely and started over. Right now, I'm looking at the default values that 2k set for Pro, Allstar, and legend....

In all of those sets, the user contact and power sliders are either equal or within ten points of each other.

One of the reasons we weren't seeing the contact outs is because at 35/75 your hits are all power. Line drives, hard ground balls.

I'm thinking about starting with user contact at 20 (the legend setting), user power at 45 (a mix between pro and all-star), and compensating by tuning the pitch success slider to 80.

I'm doing a little test of my own. I've started with all-star sliders, only moving infielder and outfielder speed from 20 to 30 for both human and cpu, and moving cpu base runner speed to 50 so it is equal with human baserunner speed.

I started with default allstar and liked the variety in hits and outs but, there were too many hits for both sides. Moving the fielder speed sliders was my first adjustment.

So far, it's ok. It brought the hitting numbers down, but I need to play more games. My NL stats are a little under, and my AL stats are a little over.

Some notes:
Even with my power set to 40, I've hit my share of homers. I have more homers than the cpu so far. I strongly believe the power swing is a timing thing. That is, you have to go back at the right time and then come through hard as would a real hitter. Pre-loading and waiting, I think is wrong, and is wasting the attempt.

The Cpu is making errors, but some are not counting. Usually when an infielders throw pulls the 1st basemen off the bag, there is no error given, and I receive credit for a hit.

the errors thing is a glitch. Sometimes, the 2nd baseman overthrew first base, allowing my runner to advance to second. The game counts that as a 2 base error.

My current set is 30 contact, 70 power, pitch composure at 0-10, and pitch success at 85.

That pitch success slider is the biggest thing influencing your hitting stats.

I think I've seen the error being counted twice, it just hasn't happened yet in my experiment. That being said, I have seen 2 errors that have not been counted for the cpu so far, yet they have still made other errors.

My combined NL and AL totals so far are: 8.0 for human 9.75 for cpu, that's hits per game.

As far as the pitcher success slider, I don't know yet. I've played with a slider set that had it high and still hit way better than average.

Because of the above 3 runs on 9 hits on average, and after a couple of games at 40/70 cpu batting that yielded 4 runs on 11.5 hits I've decided to up cpu power to 80, so 40/80 cpu batting, which is what Joe is using also. Too few runs scoring on the amount of hits they are getting due to a lack of power.
