Rating Formulas

This is a compilation of all found formulas that work for ratings.
Please fill free to submit more as you find them or better ones. Also if there is more than one formula listed for a category understand that there are many different ways you can get realistic ratings and numbers.

Note: Players with no attempts at all wont have the base, as well as players with close to none. Also if there % is high with hardly any attempts give them anywhere from a 25-45 depending on their position. Last but not least, always round down unless it's >.8

Rating Formulas:

3PT= Base 40 + (3pt)% + Attempted(per game) - submitted by ffaacc03

Medium= Base 35 + (16-23 Ft)% + Attempted(per game) - submitted by KingDain

Re: Rating Formulas

Mine is 3PM/3PA*215

I have found it has worked well for sim stats.

Re: Rating Formulas

Anyone in real life shooting 40% or better from 3 should have an 80 rating , people shooting in the 30s should have around a 70 rating

Thats what i go by

That is basically what my formula equates to. 80+ is about 38% and above.

Thanks for sharing Game.
I'll be sure to test that out.

Any other rating formulas?

Re: Rating Formulas

I think that any good formula for these ratings requires standardizing the numbers. For anyone who has studied statistics, you'll know what I'm talking about. For example, you would convert every player's 3pt fg% into something called a z-score, which takes into account the mean and standard deviation of the sample. You then can easily convert that z-score into a rating by defining your own mean and standard deviation for the ratings.

Unrelated to that, for the shot ratings, I like to incorporate both fg% and field goals made per minute (from each range). I think that adding in made shots better represents the true nature of the rating.

Matt Bonner(top qualified 3pt% this season) should have a 106 rating, and then you'd have to subtract 7 to get 99. So shouldn't the formula be 3PM/3PA*215-7?

No. And don't look at it just for this season. I take the last four seasons, multiply this season by 3 and last season by 2 (so there is emphasis on the last two seasons), and then get a rating. It has worked VERY well. If you subtract is by 7, guys are going to be shooting WAY too low of a percentage. Using my formula, he'd be about a 94 3pt shooter.
