CH2k8 My Player Mode

CH2k8 My Player Mode

I. Overview
II. Setup
III. Gameplay/Options
IV. Creating your player
V. ABL years
VI. NCAA years
VII. Accomplishments

I. Overview
Take MJ through the UNC years. Take LeBron through March Madness with Ohio State (or the U?). Take your own created legend from a HS Freshmen in the ABL to the Final Four. The idea here is to use the open legacy mode to create a My Player experience comparable to the NBA2k counterpart. Some people have been doing this on their own but I wanted to post how I'm playing it and see what everybody's opinion is. My last post didn't seem to drum up much interest but we'll see. My goal with this is to come up with customized settings and suggestions to make it whatever you guys want to get out of it.

II. Setup

Game Mode: Open Legacy
Half length: Whatever you normally play on
Injuries: Your choice. Your player's durability rating will come in to play here.
Players Leave Early: Your choice. If you leave it on it will be more realistic but you will run the risk of having your player leave for the draft after your first great season.
Transfers: Again your call but chances are your player won't transfer from your team.
Customize Conferences: Turn this on if you want to play with a historic or custom team.
Customize Schedule: Turn on if you want to make sure your player plays against all your rivals.
Team Selection: There are a few different strategies to consider in order to make sure your player is playing on your team:

(1) Choose a team you don't care about. Picking a team from the same region as your player will be more convenient when scheduling ABL games. Play with your player through the ABL and follow your player's recruitment through the HS years to see what teams he is most interested in and what teams have offered scholarships. After he has signed with a team, go to their roster and write down his attributes. Then recreate your player from the main menu and restart your dynasty with your player on any of the teams that offered him a scholarship. Pros: Gives you more choice in what scholarship your player accepts; play with current roster; not much need to recruit for your team during the regular season. Cons: More work; no continuity from HS to NCAA once you've recreated your player.

(2) Pick a team that you know you want to play for. You can either create your player in the main menu and start your Legacy already in the NCAA, or play the ABL and try to recruit your player to your team. Pros: Continuity from ABL to NCAA; recruiting your player from freshmen year gives you a better chance at signing him. Cons: Must take the time to recruit for your team during your player's years in ABL; Chance of losing your player to another team - in which case you'd have to go back to the main menu and recreate your player for your team as in choice (1).

(3) Start with a team you don't care about (preferably in the same region as your player) and increase some of your coach's attributes (you get enough free points in the beginning of an open legacy to make your coach all A+). If your coach is good enough you will be offered some top jobs in years 3 and 4. Follow your recruit's top schools and accept a job at one of your player's top choices, then recruit him. Pros: Better chance at landing your recruit; only have to aggressively recruit for your new team for the 1-2 years before signing your player. Cons: Chance you might not be offered a coaching spot at one of your player's top schools; chance your player might not sign in which case you will have to go back to the main menu as in (1) and (2).

I will probably try option 3 but I do like the idea of playing with the current roster instead of 2k's made up recruits. Jury is still out here. Post your suggestions.

III. Gameplay/Options
When player is on court:

Player Lock: On
Camera: This is up to you. The CH2k8 player lock camera isn't really close to the NBA 2k my player camera. Personally it makes me dizzy. There are a couple of good ones like 2k or High to experiment with and see what you like best. Post your opinions on what you think the best camera is.
Auto-subs: On
Auto-playcall and notify: On; you will still be able to call your own plays
Play Vision (or whatever it's called): Your call, again. I haven't used it much in the past but I think I might to start out for this. Maybe after a couple of games I'll get to the point where I know the plays that the auto-playcall brings up.

When player is off court:
This is where CH2k8 will really differ from the NBA2k My Player modes. You won't be able to super-sim but you will have the option of playing as the rest of the team when your player is out. If you prefer not to play when your player is sitting then you can change the team selection to CPU vs. CPU and watch the game while you're sitting out - if you want to move things along you can crank the game speed up.

IV. Creating your player
This is the trickiest part of this whole setup. Some of us want to be the stud 5-star PG with offers from all the top programs. Some of us want to be the raw 7-footer that turns out to be a dominant force. Some of us want to be the diamond in the rough shooter for a Mid-Major Cinderella story. The idea is to find the right attribute suggestions/limitations that will allow us to work towards these instead of being the #1 recruit and a 95 OVR as a freshmen. I created a couple of different players and tracked how their attributes changed from the time I created them to the their freshmen year of college. I also tracked college player progression over 4 year period of simulation. Here are some of the things I've figured out so far that might help you in creating your recruit:

HS Recruits
- You can grow. I saw an average of about 2-3" increase in height in players from freshmen to senior year.
- You are more likely to go down in rank than go up. As more recruits are added to the pool from freshmen to senior year it only makes sense that there will be more behind you AND more in front of you.
- Your player can progress and regress in attributes and it seems to be tied into your potential but there is also some random variation. The max you can probably expect any single attribute to increase is around 10-12pts. On average its more like 4-5.
- I created PG's because that is what my player is going to be. I gave all players A+ potential to see how much they could progress and those that I made all ratings 75 were in the top 10 recruits. Those who were all 65's were 3-4 stars ranked from 100-120. Those who were all 60's were 3 stars ranked well down into the 400's. This isn't exactly a perfect formula to follow since different positions require different skill sets but this should get you started.

College Players
- Progression is linked to your player's potential and your coach (I think teaching ability).
- The max you can expect your recruit to improve over 4 years is a little over +15 OVR.
- Each attribute can go up anywhere from 5-12 points depending on your potential.
- Exceptions: HUSTLE and DUNKST increase slowly (about +1 per year), and AWR increases more quickly (may go as high as +15)

This is what I've seen from simulating with a small sample size of created players. Hopefully this gives you enough information about progression to figure out where you might want your player to be by the end of his senior year, subtract off the max amounts I mentioned above and try to get your player to his full potential or higher. Feel free to post your experience with player progression

V. ABL years
Your player will not have an ABL team the first year you create him (i.e. if you make a HS freshmen they won't have a team until they're a sophomore). After that, you will have 3 ABL season consisting of 8 games each and possibly 3 more games ABL national tournament.

Note: Make sure you add your player to your recruiting target list. Some players can disappear from the recruiting list until senior year which makes them difficult to find what ABL team they are on.

VI. NCAA years
Playing-time: You can make your guy start and play 40 mins or you can auto-set your rotation. Your call depending on how much realism you want.
Training: Set your personal training regimen and complete drills to improve your player from week to week. Found under: Coaches Office>Development>Training/Bonus Drills
Recruiting: You will have to continue to offer scholarships for your team in order to keep your team competitive. If you want to be minimally involved in this you can set your recruiting to "assisted" and just offer scholarships to the most interested recruits. I don't suggest this though. I will be doing all the recruiting for my team. Your player won't be able to win championships by himself.

VII. Accomplishments
Lead ABL in Scoring, Assists, Rebounds, Blocks or Steals
Win your ABL Region
Win ABL Championship
Lead Conference in Scoring, Assists, Rebounds, Blocks or Steals
Win Conference Championship/Tournament
All-Conference 1st-Team, 2nd-Team, Freshmen
Conference Freshmen of the Year
Conference Player of the Year
Lead NCAA in Scoring, Assists, Rebounds, Blocks or Steals
All-American 1st-Team, 2nd-Team, Freshmen
2k Sports Award (Mid-Major Player of the year)
NCAA Player of the Year
Win a National Championship
NCAA Tournament MOP
Draft Status: Dark Horse, Drafted, 1st Round, Top 10, Top Pick

I'm thinking accomplishments should be worth attribute points (i.e. leading in assist give you AST points, winning a championship gives you AWR, CLUTCH, CONSISTENCY). Probably something along the lines of 1 pt for ABL, 2 for conference and 3 for NCAA accomplishments. I'll probably just play and make up my mind on this as it happens.

Re: CH2k8 My Player Mode

Very interesting definitely interested in trying this sometime. If I do this I might even go out and get NBA 2K8 and continue my career there

Re: CH2k8 My Player Mode

Great write up.

I've done this a couple times myself in the past, though I haven't recently because I'm not a fan of how player lock plays at times. It's a lot of fun to create a lower rated player and try to lead a small school to glory.

Re: CH2k8 My Player Mode

first of all i wanna say that this is the thread i been meaning to find lol! im actually doing a closed legacy My Player with Howard because i could have played for them in real life (Im from DC as well).

Bio:
PG #12
5'10" 150 lbs
HS Class '08
Potential: A+

I didn't feel like doing the ABL thing with My Player so i just redshirted him on Howard the first year (which would have been my senior year in hs anyway).

i play on Player Lock camera view (Zoom=6, Height=4). i def kno wut you mean by gettin dizzy lol but i feel like a good combo of zoom/height/gamespeed/playerspeed keeps everything from spinning TOO fast.

my only real question is, how do i make the gameplay as realistic as possible when it comes to being a My Player? i like to play on MOP but i feel like it favors the CPU a lil too much in unrealistic ways. which difficulty/sliderset combo goes well with 20min halves? (btw, i also like to play with 20min halves lol) and which difficulty/sliderset will give me the most realistic competition. i realize that since i been playin this game since it came out, i pretty much have the game broken lol but i wud like to kno that im not gonna blow out a powerhouse team as Howard, or get punished by a fellow MEAC school. but i would like it to be close (playing a powerhouse) if i play smart and create good looks with my team.

Re: CH2k8 My Player Mode

I've thought about doing this numerous of times, but with a random recruit. Make a backstory and make a journal/dairy type thing for it. But I honestly don't think I'd have the attention span for it.

But one thing I've wanted and may do is when I "import" my choops classes into 2k14, or probably even 2k15, do a "myplayer" type season in MyLeague. Like one of those type of stories/shows where they follow a nba rookie for a whole season. And probably choose one rookie each season.
