Re: "Chiefs Will": The Kansas City Chiefs

2010-11 Season Outlook

The Kansas City Chiefs look for a marked improvement over a 4-12 2009 campaign. The Chiefs put together what looks to be one of the best draft classes of 2010, drafting safety Eric Berry, RB/WR Dexter McCluster and TE Tony Moeaki in the early rounds. All three players will likely make an immediate impact.

The Chiefs' offense will continue to rely on the run game. Jamaal Charles had an explosive second half of 2009 after KC parted ways with veteran Larry Johnson. In order to keep Charles' legs fresh throughout the season, GM Scott Pioli brought in Thomas Jones, the tough veteran who will be asked to grind out tough yards. The wildcard McCluster will be used in a variety of ways and should keep defenses guessing.

The Chiefs' defense is extremely young and inexperienced, but the potential is there to have a solid season. KC will be looking for positive growth from their two young highly touted defensive lineman, Glenn Dorsey and Tyson Jackson. The secondary, anchored by rising star Brandon Flowers, got a shot of talent with the additions of Berry and Javier Arenas. These three players will be hoping to make big plays and force turnovers.

Overall, the Chiefs should expect to finish the season at or slightly above the .500 mark. The AFC West is not particularly strong, but the Chargers may have one the most talented team in the AFC. KC will get to test the waters against San Diego right away in their week 1 matchup.

Re: "Chiefs Will": The Kansas City Chiefs

Preseason Results

The Chiefs finished 1-3 in the preseason, but head coach Todd Haley made clear that the wins and losses were not the true measure of progress in the preseason.

"It's always nice to win games in the preseason, but more importantly I look for how we are progressing both individually and as offensive, defensive and special teams units," Haley said. "We have made some nice progress so far."

The Chiefs got through the preseason in good shape from an injury standpoint. The only injury was to RT Ryan O'Callaghan, who suffered a torn hamstring and is expected to be out for the first three weeks of the regular season.

Fans around Kansas City are already starting to wonder if Matt Cassel is the long-term solution at quarterback. Though Cassel did not play poorly in the preseason by any means, backup Brodie Croyle made some spectacular throws that caught the eye of fans and coaches.

"Matt is our #1 quarterback, no question," offensive coordinator Charlie Weis said. "But it is nice to see Brodie step in and do a great job when he was given an opportunity."

The Chiefs young defense struggled, failing to hold an opponent to less than 21 points.

"That's just a lot of inexperience," defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel said. "We've progressed a lot since training camp and will be ready to go against the Chargers."

Saints QB Daniel, Vikings RB Gerhart Impress in Preseason

New Orleans Saints backup QB and former Mizzou Tigers star Chase Daniel has had an outstanding preseason, throwing for 806 yards and seven touchdowns in the four preseason games.

"Drew [Brees] has really helped me out a lot on how to read NFL defenses," Daniel said. "I'm starting to feel very comfortable."

Minnesota Vikings rookie RB Toby Gerhart was also benefited from All-Pro tutelage, running for the second most yards in the preseason, behind Titans superfreak Chris Johnson.

"AP has taken me under his wing and showed me how he prepares both in conditioning and in the film room," Gerhart said.

Re: "Chiefs Will": The Kansas City Chiefs

Week 1 Preview
San Diego Chargers @ Kansas City Chiefs

The citizens of Kansas City are enthusiastic about hosting a season-opening Monday Night Football showdown between the visiting rival San Diego Chargers and their Chiefs.

This first week is crucial for the young Chiefs. A win here would give the team some confidence and energy that could allow them to have a successful year; a bad loss may deflate the team before it has a chance to get going and may lead to the type of season we saw last year from KC.

The Chargers, on the other hand, are notorious for their slow starts. Vincent Jackson will play after signing a contract just before training camp was over, but he will likely be less than sharp. If the Chargers deliver a focused and motivate performance, this is a game they will likely win.

One of the keys for San Diego will be stopping the Chiefs' rushing attack. It is no secret that KC will want to run the ball early and often, protecting Matt Cassel against a good defensive line and an inconsistent, undertalented wide receiver corps. If the Chargers can slow down the tandem of Jamaal Charles and Thomas Jones, it will be tough for the Chiefs to win.

In his first career start, Kansas City safety Eric Berry will be asked to lock up the league's best tight end, Antonio Gates. Philip Rivers will likely look to take advantage of this matchup all night long.

The crowd will be electric, the young Chiefs will be pumped, but ultimately the Chargers are still the team to beat in the AFC West and should expect to win this game.

Re: "Chiefs Will": The Kansas City Chiefs

With less than a minute to go, Kansas City Chiefs kicker Ryan Succop had kicked the go-ahead field goal that had the sidelines celebrating, the fans believing and the sportswriters taking note.

Only problem was, Philip Rivers was on the other sideline, waiting for his chance to crush everything the Chiefs had earned.

Just 39 seconds later, Rivers' work was done and a raucous Arrowhead Stadium fell silent.

27-23, Chargers.

It may be just one game, but a win against the mainstay at the top of the AFC West could have propelled the Chiefs to a fast start.

Now...

"It's just one game," head coach Todd Haley said. "We've got a long way to go."
