Help a Soccer Novice out.

I'm American so if I seem a little slow, when it comes to soccer that's why. Anyways, I know the basics of the game in general. But there are a few things I have no idea about, especially in career mode. So, I have three pretty basic questions.

Q:When looking at the standings there are three red teams at the bottom, what does that indecate? Are those the teams on the playoff bubble or something? I'm playing as Chelsey, if any of you were wondering.

Q: Without there being an organized first year player draft, how do you recieve rookies, prospects ect?

Q:Can someone explain the transfer system to me in detail? It seems kind of strange that a team can just pay to take another player from another team, without giving up any form of compensation, other then money. Why can't you just trade players like in any other sport?

I'll do my best to answer these but I don't play too much manager mode on FIFA.

A:The three teams in red at the bottom are teams that are in the "drop zone" If you finish in these spots you will be relegated to the lower leagues. Think of instead of getting the first pick in the draft you are forced to Triple A and the top teams from Triple A or in the case of England the Championship would be brought up to replace them.

A:I'm not sure on this as I've never actually played more then a season in FIFA but in Football Manager there are players created for you and depending on your team prestiege and other factors they will be better on average. This being said not all of your people on Chelsea will be good and somebody generated onto a lower league team may be a "wonderkid" and be the best player created that year.

A:In real life and football manager you can exchange players however it is fairly rare compared to American sports. Players more like assets that can be sold. For you Drogba might fetch you 20 Mil on the market that you then spread out to make your team better as opposed to just trading with one team. This gives you the option to better use your money. Similar things happen in the minor leagues of baseball alot at Babe Ruth was sold from the Red Sox to finance a play, so sometimes the selling is just for the financial benefit of the owner or the club it self.

Relegation is the best idea in sports, I wish the American sports leagues had this so we would be spared the atrocious play of teams that tank their remaining games to get high draft picks - the NBA is a great example of this disgraceful type of play.

Relegation is a great concept indeed. That, coupled with the fight at the top of the table to qualify for tournaments next season makes every game important right up until the last game.

Relegation works in soccer because the countries where these leagues exist have hundreds of professional teams.

I like the idea, but the way sports are structured in the US, relegation would never work.

To answer the OP question about the transfer system. Yes, players are looked at as more like assets to these clubs. A team will offer a certain amount of money to another club for the right to negotiate a contract with the player. If the player agrees to the contract offered, the team pays the other team the agreed upon fee. Player trades do happen in these deals sometimes. For example, before last year's season, there was an exchange between Barcelona and Inter Milan (two of Europe's top clubs) involving Samuel Eto'o and Zlatan Ibarahimovic.

Relegation could work in this country, but there's no owner who would want to put the money into a squad only to have it thrown into a lower league.

Hell, I'd love to see New England get relegated to the USL/NASL. What a horrible ownership.

It really wouldn't work here. Where are you going to demote an NBA team to? The Developmental League? Waste of time.

NFL? Demote them to where? The Arena League? Different rules. UFL? Again, waste of time, the talent gap is astronomical.

NHL and MLB? These sports unlike the other two league have minor leagues, but the problem is...the teams in the premiership don't own the 2nd division teams. You can just send down the Pirates in favor of a AAA team when another MLB team owns the minor league team.

You'd have to create a league for each sport that plays by the same rules and are seperately owned.
