Be a GM Draft

It is extremely hard to find a solid draft pick. I've done 3 years so far, trying to build a team through the draft. So far, the best player I've drafted was a 66. The scouting is absolutely pointless. I do all of the scouting and when it comes time for the draft, I know nothing about the guy I decide to draft. My NHL and AHL rosters consist of a few superstars, some solid pro players, and then about 10 guys that I drafted that are no better than the day i picked them. Maybe there is something I'm missing. I had no problem with NHL 10's Be a GM, so it's really frustrating me that I'm having such a tough time with NHL 11.

Yikes! This concerns me. I just got the game and have not really had a chance to get into it (though I did notice they didn't fix my number one gripe - still only last four years of stats accessable). I also build my team through the draft, so this could be a real problem if the prospects are low level and do not progress. Anybody else get a few years into the future?

Re: Be a GM Draft

all the guys i draft are progressing quite nicely in mine. i don't scout at all i let the cpu do it. I take whoever is projected to be taken higher.

i drafted T Hall first overall and he is now a 87 entering my third year in BAGM, 2nd year in the league. he started as a 75 when i drafted him.

Maybe your problem is that you're drafting guys with low potentials. all the guys i get are B- and higher, unless they are late round picks.

I kept all the guys that had B- or better potentials and they have not panned out. Hopefully they will progress better in the next few years.

Maybe it has something to do with your assistant coach? I know in 10 they train more points and where you want them the better they are. Haven't gotten that far in 11 yet.

I'd recommend testing. Try and upgrade your asst. coach and try different training focuses, positions (first line/pairing minutes, playing in the NHL instead of AHL, etc.) and sim through the season a few times and see if you notice any patterns.

Re: Be a GM Draft

Make sure your scout is at least level 3.

When are you picking though and what is the persons potential?

My best pick was 4th overall and I ended up getting an A potential, 74 overall DMan.

The main reason was cause I utilized the scouting assignments thing and every time the assignment was up, I looked through all the leagues, looked at all the guys and where they're projected to go, then if I see a league with lots of players being picked around where I'm drafting, I'll make my scout go there for 6 weeks.

It takes some time for your players to develop too. An A potential player gets boosted like 7 overall ratings a season or something like that.

Really not an issue mate. I was surfing on the EA forum just a few minutes ago and they were discussing how solid draft picks develop. Adam Larrson wound up with a 90 overall in three years and apparently put up 61 points in his rookie campaign. Something-Hopkin's was less stellar, although still a good point production. Basically the game seems more determined to delay your rookie's success, which is an appealing realism feature in my book.
