Bobby Petrino is a Cheeser

I was watching some of the Arkansas game earlier and, man, I saw all kinds of cheese out there and a few things that we complain about as being broken in the game, namely computer aggression. ULM runs the 3-3-5 and it looked like they blitzed damn near every down.

I can't count the number of times Petrino went for it on 4th down, undoubtly because he knew that he had the superior team... the result, Arkansas goes into halftime with a 7-0 lead. I flip back and forth and suddenly it's Arkansas 24-7 late in the 4th quarter. So, what does Petrino do with his Heisman Candidate quarterback who took some nice shots and tweaked his shoulder earlier? He leaves him in to throw another TD pass. Now I kinda get it, throw the kill shot, steal their will, but I flip back a few minutes ago. There's 43 seconds left, 31-7, and Mallett is STILL in the game throwin' away. They're at like the 30 yard line trying to score again and with under a minute left, 4th and 9, Petrino goes for it again!

I just found it amusing how closely the stuff we see as "cheese" shows up on Saturdays and Sundays. I wonder how many sportsmanship point hits Petrino would have taken if he was playing NCAA 11 online? I know I'd avoid his gamer tag.

Re: Bobby Petrino is a Cheeser

It's not cheese because he is not winning by using a glitch. It's real life so cheese does not apply here. The SEC schools play teams like ULM to work on things and get ready for the SEC. Unless you have ever coached a team then you can't call him out. I'm a high school coach and have often went for it on 4th down when up or facing a lesser team. Maybe he was not happy with his team. It's the other team that has to step up and stop it.
Don't get me wrong, I dislike Petrino. I think he has no class but I also know as a coach you call plays and the other team has to stop it. I agree with keeping your starters out there, even when up, if they didn't play like they should have. In the end ULM has to play the hole game and they have to stop them if they don't like it. You can not cheese in real life only in video games.

Oh... finding exploits and playing like and a*****, I thought it was all bawled up under the "cheese" umbrella. Gotcha.

And I wasn't calling Petrino out, jbrew. It was more of an observation. In fact, I've loved watching his offenses over the years. I totally get why he left the starters in... trying to tack on another TD pass with under a minute left for style points, not so much.

Like I said, I just found it amusing.

Re: Bobby Petrino is a Cheeser

It's Bobby Petrino. It's what he's always done. Believe me, we saw years of it at Louisville.

Bobby Petrino is all about offense. If the offense doesn't do well, it doesn't matter if your defense scored 60 points in a blowout, you better believe you're playing the whole game and doing extra sprints in practice if you're an offensive player. At Louisville, if his practices ended in defensive struggles, he would get absolutely pissed; didn't matter if it was just the defense playing well. His philosophy is that the offense should always play better. Interestingly, I would argue that that's what makes his defenses better as well (they've never been outstanding, but he's had some pretty good guys over the years... Elvis Dumervil, William Gay, etc).

Funnily enough, he's perfectly happy to put backups in if he's happy with the offensive starters. For instance, in the 2005 UK game, the starters played nearly the whole game even though it was a comfortable lead. But the offense wasn't playing well, and in fact, the game ended up being kinda close by the end as UK fought back. In 2006, we came out and dominated and Cantwell ended up playing most of the second half. We also played I think 4 running backs in that game (especially after Michael Bush broke his leg).

So basically, this is nothing new for Petrino. He's just trying to get his offense to play exceptionally, and I would argue it's what makes him one of the better offensive minds in the game today. Is it bad sportsmanship? Maybe. But it wouldn't be an issue if the offense just executed the whole game like they should.

See, this is where people just have NO football knowledge. Yep, Petrino went for it on 4th and 9 in the 4th QTR with 50 seconds left...Did he throw it to the endzone??? No, he ran a draw. He wasn't trying to run the score up, he was trying to end the game..

Well, that's a big piece of the puzzle that shouldn't be left out.
