Just needing to score

I've been tweaking sliders that have excellent gameplay, the right amount of shots, the right amount of CPU goals.
But one thing is missing-I cannot score a lick. In my 35 or so average of shots, I score 0-1 goals a game(probably due to me being the Islanders), and I wanted to test this against a CHL team with a 58 overall goalie and won 4-0, but in the NHL, there aren't 58 overall goalies, with largely inexperienced d-men.
I've been toying with both user accuracy and goalie reaction, but still it doesn't seem to be making a dent.
Does anybody have any suggestions on how to keep my gameplay the same, but have 1 or 2 of my 35 shots go in instead of me being shut out almost every game?

Try increasing the CPU Screen effect...increase your pass accuracy a notch or two. And definitely increase your shot power, but not too much. Maybe a click or so above your shot accuracy.

Also, just be patient when shooting. The NHL goalies are tougher and react better. Pass, pass, pass. Just takes time, and you'll get used to it. Another way to practice, is to either play the practice mode, or play position lock. This way you can work on your skills, and let the CPU take control of the other players.

Re: Just needing to score

I've had the same problem in this game. Last year, I played on All-Star regularly, with attribute effect turned all the way up; it was realistic and I was still able to score enough.

This year, the attribute effect bar has a giant bearing on scoring I think. I had to turn it down because players with 70-79 shot accuracy will pretty much never score on NHL goalies, which isn't very fun.

While that may be considered even more realistic, I don't think it translates well to a video game when you're looking to have some fun and win a few games.

And if you're like me and play AHL games a lot, having the attribute effect all the way up makes the game incredibly sluggish since every player in that league is 60-79.

So I'd toy with the attribute effect bar, and like the guy above me said, mess with goalie screen effect, shot accuracy/power.

You can also trying messing with the Game Speed bar. I usually keep it on 2 clicks; I think the default was only 1 click, which was too slow for me.

When trying to find the right sliders, I suggest staying in one league and picking the same two teams that way you have a constant in the experiment. Hope that helped.

Re: Just needing to score

I found the defense to be smothering so I turned down pass intercepetions to 0, stick lift at 1 & poke check 0 to loosen up play more. Also moving up screen effect and turning down goalie reaction helps for more goals. I also have hitting and power down as well. I am still tinkering with the sliders and adjusting as I go along but I think the smothering defense limits scoring chances too much not just for me but the cpu as well.

Re: Just needing to score

Thank you guys for the replies!
I spent LOTS of time in practice mode, then came up with an idea to possibly change the camera, and in the camera usage thread, someone posted their custom camera numbers, which I tried, and I think now they made a difference. With the Islanders the last few years, I loved running my offense through the point-man at any time I could to create deflections/screens, but I wanted to try Action camera, and while that was a cool close-up, it restricted my playmaking, which could explain the lack of scoring.
First game with the custom cam, I lost to the Flyers 3-2, one goal was a beautiful rush by Tavares, then when Streit crossed into the zone, passed back to Streit, slapshot top-shelf, then a rebound by Okposo later in the game, which I liked seeing being able to score in 2 different ways. Maybe it was just a matter of not having the ability to see a play develop. If anyone's having any trouble, I urge you to play around with the camera, seeing the whole ice really does make a difference.

If you're like me the farther away camera angles work best.
I can see more of the ice, see the plays develop and most important see where my players are on the ice.

"Smothering Defense" .......That's one thing I'm struggling with against the CPU and online against another human in versus mode. In both cases my opponents defense is smothering and relentless the whole game.........something I am unable to replicate on my defense!! I have tried different defensive strategies, etc... but to no avail.

When I say smothering defense against my human opponents, it's their AI team mates (not the player being human controlled) that sticks to my puck carrier like glue as soon as I receive the puck and then I'm being harassed (almost raped.......LOL) all the way up the ice. That makes for a great deal of frustration let me tell you!!

Like I said before, I can not get my team mates to apply the same kind of relentless pressure, in fact once my opponent takes possession of the puck, my team mates will skate away from the puck carrier, almost avoiding him. This happens even on my opponents half of the ice and with my defense set to the highest level of defensive pressure. All I can do is sit back and watch in utter disgust as my opponent makes passes across ice to wide open guys as my defense is sight seeing *sighs*

I know I'm probably just missing something in my defensive strategy settings. Can someone pleas help a fellow OS bro out with some advice on how to get more pressure from my AI team mates??? I really want to represent OS well when I'm playing random cheesers online (LOL) but at this point I've pretty much been canon fodder without some defensive help from my AI cohorts.........UGGGH!!

I am having the same exact problem almost. It seems like I cant even move once I get the puck. I am messing with some sliders a bit and seeing if that helps. I can feel myself slowly getting better though. I didnt play NHL 10 much, but I can see myself playing 11 for a long time.
