NHL 10 for beginner

I just got my copy from gamefly and the game is totally amazing even I have never watched/played a hockey game before but man I am hooked!!

I just played a few matches and I was having trouble skating smoothly(my players are slow). Does the game have an acceleration button (like fifa)?

Also, the goal gate is incredibly small but the goalie is huge, how do you guys score?

I googled all the rules and couldn't really find any useful info on how to play the game, can somebody help?

I know you can adjust the speed of the games with one of the sliders in the settings. But, that would adjust all the players and overall speed of the game. Try it until it feels right!

Net
It ain't Soccer/Euro Football, that's for sure! Just remember that the puck moves at light speed and it's terribly small (compared to a soccer ball) and even the very best goalie might have trouble reacting to a perfectly placed shot in his weakest area (high glove, blocker/stick side - low glove or stick side - five hole/between the legs). Just keep firing them at him!
There's a slider for manually or auto aiming of shots.
There are also some goalie sliders I believe.

If you mean actual "hockey" rules...maybe try the NHL site.
If you truly haven't seen hockey played before, there should be real highlight packages all over the place. Please look for some, it's the best game in the world IMHO!!!

If you mean EA NHL rules (or how to play), as a bit of a newbie myself, I suggest just to keep playing!
Try to focus on a couple of controls each time!
- Stop and start skating, don't do a circle chasing the puck
- Try wrist shots from anywhere and everywhere inside the blueline
- Try to make a few passes (I still launch them in the wrong direction from time to time, but it's getting better)
- Learn to hit with the right stick on defense (without a penalty)
- Test out the blocking of shots
- Try to poke check
- Try some board play

AND, maybe search the "sliders" forum to see if there are any "rook" specific sliders that might help your game???

BUT just keep playing!
In fact, aside from BEAGM mode, I have taken up BEAPRO mode, where you start as a raw rookie, play, get drafted, hopefully advance to an NHL team after games in the minors and all the while you can upgrade specific skills (player progression) as you get better and better.
In fact, I'm just completing my first season (late to NHL10).
A little tense at the trading deadline...but even getting traded would be kinda cool!
And the next season, of course, you can see if you can outperform your previous one.
All Very cool!

Have fun!

No acceleration button like FIFA, but there is a button that will allow you to get a really short burst of speed when you have the puck, you need to click the LT(on 360) or L2(on PS3). But, you probably shouldn't bother with that yet, get the basics down first.

In basic terms, the 3 primary ways to score goals in NHL10 are:
  • 1- Fake the goalie out when you have an open shot chance with a deke (when you move your stick side-to-side) to try to fool them into moving out of position and then shoot wherever you see an open area.
  • 2- In your offensive zone, shoot whenever you get an open lane to the net (when a defender is not standing between you and the goal to block the shot). Most times the goalie will make the save but there will be a rebound. Get your players to the net and try to shoot the puck in while it's bouncing around in front of the net before the defense is able to gain possession.
  • 3- When you get close to the net, you should be aware of any open players on your team that are on the opposite side of the net and look to pass to them and have them quickly shoot right as they receive the pass. (These shots are known as "one-timers"). They are the most common type of goals in NHL10.

I found these two links that might help you understand the game better.

The best and funnest way to learn the game is to watch actual NHL game footage, as most play-by-play commentators usually do a good job of explaining the game as it goes along. Below is a link to the NHL Video Youtube channel, you can watch full games and highlights there:

Hope this helps, ENJOY!

One timer is good, I won some games with it. A lot of times the puck is blocked by the goalie with his body instead of bouncing back(even with vision control), is there any technique to that?

And defense is hard, I always got computer 1-0 rush...

I know the difference b/w body check and poke check, but what is "stick lift" for?

Once you get comfortable with the game, you start to see opportunities unfold where your players are in good position to crash the net, you should make sure to shoot low from the outside to force the goalie into giving up a rebound. It doesn't work everytime, but most of the time it does and it's a good way to score. High shots are using saved using the glove which you rarely see rebounds from.

And defense is hard, I always got computer 1-0 rush...

Hardest but most important part of the game, one tip is on 1-on-1 breakouts, to make sure if it's just you and the defender that you shade him a little towards the inside as you can usually recover to the outside but inside gives them a good shooting opportunity most of the time, oh yeah and use poke check a lot...

Stick lift is another way of stealing the puck from players, in real life it's primary use is last ditch efforts to keep a player from shooting in close, or to prevent a pass receiver from launching an open one-timer. You can use it this way in the game but more than likely you will get called for a penalty (high stick or slashing), it's almost an automatic penalty anytime you try it from behind the puck carrier, make sure they are facing you, anytime you try one.,

In NHL10, the only time you should use the stick lift is for 1 on 1 races to the puck near the corners, if both players get to the puck around the same time, and you stick lift him right before he gets there, he won't be able to gain control of the puck and will also be temporarily stunned enough that you will be able to grab the puck and move it out of there.

Re: NHL 10 for beginner

Here are some things that I believe are not mentioned in the manual...

L2/LT (vision control) - What is it?: If you have the puck in the offensive zone, and hold down L2/LT your man will change his angle to the goal for a better shot.
While pressing it when in possesion of the puck it will also change your deking possibilities (you can do a few new dekes, like the spinorama etc)

If you're in the offensive zone and don't have the puck and hold down L2/LT, your man will will not check/tackle when you push your right stick, instead he will try to shoot (if the puck is near). That's very handy if you're trying to hit in those rebounds and loose pucks and want to avoid getting penalties for interference.

When you're defending and press L2/LT your d-man will keep facing the puck.
That way you can stay in one spot, but always face the puck while your opponents are passing it around.

The same goes for the offence if your playing Be a Pro (= a locked position).
Keep pressing L2/LT while your team mates are passing the puck around and your guy will always be facing the puck, which puts him in a better position of recieving the pass, and more importantly, in a great position to fire off a one timer.

R2: Changing player - The last man.
If you don't have the puck and want to change to your defensman closest to your goal, hold down R2 (half second?) instead of just clicking it. That way instead of changing to a player closest to the puck, you'll become the d-man closest to the goal. Pretty handy if your a bit out of position and need to defend a rush, or generally when defending.

L2: Push puck
What this is useful for is if you have a clear lane forward, perhaps on a breakaway. Tap L2, and you will push the puck slightly infront of you and you will notice that you're able to skate a little faster and hopefully lose anyone chasing you.

Screening
There is a slider for the effect of screening the goalie, but even on default remember that if there is a defender or one of your teammates infront of the goalie, there's a big chance of the player screening the goalie. He's blocking the goalies view of the puck.
When the goalie is screened there's a bigger chance of him losing rebounds, or even not saving the puck at all.
On top of that, if the guy screening the goalie is one of your team mates, it's a pretty good chance that he'll do a deflection (that's automatic), which is really hard to save.

So basically, try some shooting, even some weak wristers when there's a traffic jam in front of the goalie.

Dump-and-chase.
If you have a hard time going into the offensive zone with the puck, try dumping the puck.
There's a few different ways;
* Wrist shot/slap shot - You'll simply shoot the puck into the offensive zone, and start chasing it.
* Hold R1 and push forward on right analogue. This will produce a high dump (the longer you hold R1 before flipping the analogue, the higher it will be).
* Hold R1 and do a slap shot - This will produce a lower, harder slap shot which is great for getting the puck deep.

Remember that all of the above shots are made from outside the offensive zone, and are therefore completely manual, i.e. the shot will go exactly in the direction you're aiming (left analogue).

Can't think of anything else right now, and I need to get back to work.

Good luck mate, and welcome to the world of Hockey.

Re: NHL 10 for beginner

Hey Visualizer, I had no idea about the NHL YouTube site. I have been dying to see whole NHL games and you my friend have provided the cure to my agony! Up till now I have just seen highlights on NHL.com and clips on YouTube.

May I tell the whole world that I love you? Yes, yes I am in love with you and I don't care who knows. I may be giddy with NHL YouTube happiness (watching the Bruins vs Flyers gm 1) but I must simply declare that I am feeling the amore du passion and I have you in my sights....whoa, my wife just walked past and she is wearing those tight pants I like so much. Sorry Vis, we are through.
