New Mexico State Introduces New Coach

Las Cruces, New Mexico

[Our shot opens to a dingy looking room set up with 3 rows of hard metal folding chairs and a single ceiling fan turning lightly in circles. Three middle aged men of varying body types sit awaiting one thing or another. Sweat is making its way down the faces of all three and by the looks of this place you would think it was a room that nothing goes down in besides maybe some seedy business. Instead we are live at a New Mexico State Aggies press conference called by Athletic Director McKinley Boston to make an introduction. Mr. Boston has a stack of index cards that he's perusing while sitting at the makeshift stage set up for this conference. A banner hangs up behind him with "Pistol Pete", the NMSU mascot. Finally McKinley stands and makes his way to the microphone, looking at out the non-crowd before speaking.]

MB: I'd like to thank all of you for coming out here today.

[Awkward silence as the three reporters in attendance look at one another and to the empty chairs.]

MB: We've been in a constant trance of losing here at New Mexico State when it comes to our football program. It's been fifty years since we have made our way to a bowl game and it seems like no matter who we hire we cannot get over the hump.

[Boston shifts before speaking again.]

MB: This has to change. The change begins today, I called a press conference to let everyone know that we have cut ties with 2nd year Head Coach DeWayne Walker and have decided to bring in a new face.

[The reporters start to talk amongst themselves as Boston continues.]

MB: I'd like to introduce you to our new head football coach....Gunner "Grizz" Griswold!

[A man steps out from behind the makeshift banner sporting New Mexico State apparel. He appears to be a man in his early 30s with dark hair and a stern look on his face.]

GRIZZ:*shaking Boston's hand* Thank you Mr. Boston.

[Grizz looks out into the crowd with a puzzled look on his face.]

GRIZZ: I guess I shouldn't be surprised by the lack of support our program would get from local newspapers and sites in the region. I would like to thank the few of you that did come out tonight. I understand that we at New Mexico State University have been putting out an inferior product to the football field for God knows how long. Hell, we haven't been to a bowl game in so long there are people that have been born and long dead between the last time we felt the success of a bowl game. I can see by the confused looks on your faces that you don't know who the hell I am and are probably wondering why I got the job.

[The reporters nod amongst themselves.]

GRIZZ: Well I'll tell ya' who I am. The name's Gunner Griswold but you can call me Grizz. I've loved football my whole life and really dreamed for an opportunity like this. I've coached some high school ball but never as a head coach. For most people it probably sounds like I'm not too qualified to be a head coach for a division 1 football team.

[Grizz looks around the room, pausing.]

GRIZZ: To those people I'd say....just watch. We've all seen who's come in here to New Mexico State and failed miserably. This university has had their share of qualified and not so qualified men to take over the helm for this university's football team. Maybe you think I'll be another one in a long line of failures but I can guarantee you that I won't be. I'll open the floor up for a couple of questions if you have any.

[One of the reporters stands and begins asking his question.]

REPORTER 1: Pablo Fernandez from the Las Cruces Sun-News here. What kind of football philosophies are you bringing to the field Mr. Griswold? What is your offensive and defensive gameplan?

GRIZZ: That's a great question. I understand that people think our talent level is lacking and maybe it is but we're going to do our damnedest to improve not only the quality of player here at New Mexico State but also the brand of football we're bringing out on the field. On offense we're going to be running an Air Raid attack, throwing it as much as we can until the defense stops us. I'm not opposed to running the football at all, especially if it works but I'm really looking to spread the ball around and air it out. On Defense, we're going to run a 3-3-5 stack and see what we can do out there.

[Another reporter stands up, raising his hand to ask a question.]

REPORTER 2: Crispy McCrisperson from the Santa Fe New Mexican. Coach Griswold, what is going to be your recruiting strategy to bring that brand of football that you want to New Mexico State?

GRIZZ: Another good question. It looks like at least the reporting here is half worth a damn. We're going to go out and find kids that want to win football games. Obviously you need some talent on your team but I'm more about finding people who want to win and will do everything within their power to improve themselves as football players. I'll take a chance on the kid that maybe a little slow but stays after practice everyday over the star who wants everyone to kiss their feet. I only have time for one more question boys, I need to hit the recruiting trail hard and get our season underway.

[McCrisperson sits down while the final reporter in attendance gets a question in.]

REPORTER 3: Mike Fit from LasCruces.com; Coach Grizz, do you have any predictions for the upcoming season?

[Grizz smiles.]

GRIZZ: I'm not one for predictions Mike but I will say one thing. We're going to try our hardest to present the best brand of football the people of Las Cruces have seen in a long time. We want people to come out to watch our Aggies play, not the other team. I'll see you boys later.

[Grizz walks off the stage as we fade to black.]

Opening Game, Week 2 2010 New Mexico State vs. San Diego State

Fleming leads Aggies to victory with arm and feet.

Las Cruces, NM:
The Aggies opened their season with a win over San Diego State University. In the first game under the new regime of Coach "Grizz" Griswold NMSU used an effective run and pass game behind their Junior QB Jeff Fleming. "Jeff played a great game for us today, really helping the team out and carrying us on his shoulders. We couldn't get much of a ground game going with our backs but Fleming just made plays with his feet to continue drives. He's not the most fleet-footed guy you'll ever see on a football field but he's no slouch." said Grizz after the game.

The Aggies come back next week and travel down the road to El Paso to take on their rival UTEP. "It's going to be a tough football game, anytime you involve a rivalry bad blood is going to exist. We've got to stay focused and execute. It's going to hurt us on defense having lost one of our leaders in Spencer Diaz but if we can continue to work as a team we have a shot." Griswold seems confident and his team definitely built themselves some momentum with their play today.

Week 3, 2010 I-10 Rivalry, New Mexico State Aggies at UTEP Miners

Sloppy play and miscues lead NMSU to defeat

El Paso, Texas:
The I-10 Rivalry was in full swing this year with the UTEP Miners gaining a victory over the New Mexico State University Aggies. The Miners took advantage of 5 turnovers by NMSU to take this year's game. Head Coach of the Aggies Gunner "Grizz" Griswold had this to say after his team's performance. "It was an overall pathetic showing by our team today. I put the blame on myself, my coaching staff, and our players. This was a team loss today in an important game for our institution. We can't go out there and give the ball up as many times as we did today. That isdefinitely a risk we take with putting the ball in the air as much as we do but we have to make good reads out there. Add in the drops that our receiving core had with the errant throws and it's just a recipe for disaster."

UTEP's Senior RB Donald Buckram ran to the tune of 235 yards on the NMSU defense, shredding them up and down the field and helping UTEP dominate the game's TOP. It doesn't get any easier for New Mexico State as next week they're heading to Big XII country to face off against the Kansas Jayhawks.

2010, Week 4 New Mexico State Aggies at Kansas Jayhawks

Jayhawks pummel NMSU.

Lawrence, Kansas:
If today's game were a prize fight it would've ended by TKO in the first round. Kansas came out of the gates hard versus the Ags of New Mexico State and would not let up. The KU rushing attack was dominant, as were the secondary. NMSU 1st year Head Coach Gunner "Grizz" Griswold had this to say in the post game. "To say I'm disappointed would be the understatement of the century. We started the season very promising with our win over a good San Diego State University football team and ever since then we've been getting our butts kicked up and down the football field!"

Griswold continued on his tirade, "We got out-played, out-coached, out-dressed, everything out there today. We couldn't stop their offensive line or their running back. No offense to that kid but our defense has been making a habit of making everyone we play look like Walter Freaking Payton. We have no intensity and the finger is being pointed at our entire program. Next week we have the #2 team in the country coming to our venue and if we don't watch out we're going to get our teeth knocked clean out. I expect a better effort from our squad next week."

As Coach Grizz eluded to the Aggies welcome in the Broncos of Boise State into Las Cruces next weekend. The #2 ranked Broncos have been unstoppable in WAC play for a very long time now. The challenge is going to be brought to the Aggies and we're going to see if they will get pummeled again next week.
