THQ blames Red Dead for UFC sales

Quote:
THQ has blamed Rockstar's Red Dead Redemption for hampering UFC Undisputed 2010's sales, which have so far failed to meet expectations.

Speaking to trade mag MCV, THQ's UK marketing director, Jon Rooke admitted that Rockstar's Western swallowed up most of the public's cash in May and UFC was one of the victim's of its success.

"Our sales were softer than where we would have liked them to be," Rooke told MCV. "We know our UFC and MMA fans have bought it, but we haven't delivered the broader sales yet.

"That's largely down to Red Dead Redmeption. Rockstar have probably taken a fair amount of our market share. They shipped 5m units, taking a lot of consumer dollars."

The THQ man's comments match up with those of analyst Colin Sebastian, who pointed to Red Dead as a possible cause for UFC's performance last month.

Rooke claims that Undisputed 2010's lower-than-expected sales are due to "a change in circumstances" compared to when 2009 was released, but reckons that sales will pick up in the coming months.

"Last year, we had the perfect storm," he said. "This year Rockstar did. That's not to say our sales were in any way disappointing. We still managed to ship 2.6m units, which is a fantastic achievement, and that figure is still growing.

"And we've got a long tail with that product," he said. "We absolutely believe we will deliver our initial sales expectations for UFC and the 2010 edition has been a phenomenal success."

LMAO, so pathetic of them to blame the lack of sales of UFC on a game from an entirely different genre.

I'd blame it on 09 being so boring.

Apples and oranges, THQ. I honestly believe that UFC 2009's amazing demo did huge things for its sales, and when 2010's demo was (largely) more of the same, that support dwindled...that and bad press over how stagnant 2010 seemed. The series is only in its second year, and for THQ to think that die hard fans would be willing to pick it up just because it's a "UFC Undisputed" series game regardless of how good or bad it is is not smart on their part. Gamers expect improvement in a young series, so I think THQ/Yukes itself is at least partially responsible for this drop in sales, sorry to say.

Cop out to me...THQ shouldnt have made UFC10 a freaking arcade version of UFC09.

Biggest disappointment in gaming in quite some time how pathetic and awful UFC10 turned out....UFC needs to part ways with THQ ASAP. Take a year off and make a great sim-ish MMA game...UFC10 was like a slap in the face to most UFC fans...And the sales figures support that.

Re: THQ blames Red Dead for UFC sales

This further makes me want to trade my copy in. Take some ownership to the poor product you released. Rather than blaming it on other things. Cop out is completely right SAINT.

Bottom line, it did not do well. Because people caught wind from people who bought the game that it was worst than 09 and just stayed away from it.

Dana should fire THQ and get him a different developer. Someone that is not going to make excuses and will take some ownership for their product.
