Coaching sliders work!!! Huge impact

I have almost finished my slider set for playing but have been frustrated by the CPU blitzes and lack of sticking with a running game. In previous years the coaching sliders only effected simulated statistics. None-the-less I decided to experiment.

Coaching slider default 52 for run/pass team threw the ball ~65% of the time
Coaching slider 0 for run/pass team ran the ball ~70% of the time (was >90% until the forth quarter when behind by 3 touchdowns, then abandoned the run)
Coaching slider 100 run/pass team threw the ball >90% of the time

Defensive aggression slider:
Default 60: Team blitzed almost every down
Aggression 0: Team blitzed 1/5 plays and usually only 1 defender
Aggression 100: Team blitzed every down with multiple defenders

This is monumental. This means that we can actually have teams play like their real counterparts in the NCAA this year. Unfortunately the NCAA team didn't actually set these sliders up for the teams. I am going to try to gather %run for all teams in the NCAA and make slider adjustments for all teams. It would be great if others could help with this. To create this statistic check your favorite teams statistics on Yahoo sports box scores for the 2009 season. Please exclude all non-major school games (i.e. scrub games with backup and run heavy) and divide run attempts by total plays (run + pass attempts).

As an example: University of Louisville 35.8 rush att per game / 65.8 plays per game = 54.4% run plays (for slider 100-54 = 46; which would be the correct setting for the slider; currently set at 53 by default).

I am going to do this for my test opponent team and see if the slider is spot on for % of plays or if it needs a bit more aggressive adjustment.

Re: Coaching sliders work!!! Huge impact

As another note the blitzes can be adjusted with the defensive aggression slider. I feel the AI is currently blitze happy but I don't know where to get statistics for the number of blitzes a team runs. If the slider is set at 0 the teams rarely blitz and never multiple men, if set to 100 they blitz every play and multiple defenders.

Please let me know if you have insight into the % of time a team blitzes. I am currently leaning towards reducing this slider for all teams by 10.

Finally I am not into simulation statistics, but if anyone is interested in testing how these sliders effect season simulated stats let me know your results.

Re: Coaching sliders work!!! Huge impact

Don't waste your time with box scores. I went through this same exercise for NCAA 09 to get realistic sim stats for all teams.

Team Rushing Stats: http://web1.ncaa.org/mfb/natlRank.js...&div=IA&dest=O

Team Passing Stats: http://web1.ncaa.org/mfb/natlRank.js...&div=IA&dest=O

Figure out rushing attempts divided by passing attempts and then adjust based on the NCAA setting.

For defense you can figure out how many sacks, TFL's, and turnovers a team generates when compared to their overall defensive ranking and determine an aggression based on that.

Examples:
  • High Aggression Rating = forces a lot of turnovers, gets a lot of sacks and TFL's but allows a high number of total yards
  • Average Aggression Rating = forces a lot of turnovers, gets a lot of sacks and TFL's and allows a low number of total yards (elite defense)
  • Low Aggression Rating = doesn't force a lot of turnovers and doesn't get many sacks or TFL's

The key would be finding the correct balance in the slider to determine what an "average" aggression rating is. Average is clearly not 50, so if average is somewhere around 25-30 then low becomes 5-15 and high becomes 40-60.

Re: Coaching sliders work!!! Huge impact

Oraeon, if you can figure out which slider levels are ideal for low/average/high defensive aggression then I can work up a normalized distribution of slider settings for all NCAA teams based on last year's statistics.

Let me know if that sounds good.

The Run/Pass is easy enough to do with the stats available from NCAA.

TCU's gameplan is a very good gameplan that's in the game. Their team is kicking my butt 31-0 in the 4th quarter. This is CPU vs CPU mode.

I created this list a few weeks ago, I was going to come up with the correct sliders for run pass but have not had the time to test and sim.

Here is the list:
