Do you worry a lot?

I worry about everything. I mean everything. I don't mean the "I'm-freaking-out" type of worry. I mean the just kind of below the conscious type of worry. I always think worst case. And sometimes absurd worst case. When I take a trip for example I stop at a gas station and when I get gas I wonder "is this the last gas station for like 400 miles...am I going to run out of gas before I get to another one?" This particular worry came about due to a trip in West Virginia once where I bypassed a gas station and then nearly did run out of gas before seeing another one up in the hills.

I worry about everything I'm doing in the day. Tonight for example I'm taking my girlfriend to dinner and I worry "will she like the place I picked out? What if she can't go? What if something comes up?" I mean it's ridiculous really. However, I don't just contain the worry to short term things though...I also worry long term as well "will I have enough money for retirement?" and "will I ever get married?" and etc. etc. Honestly it's exhausting.

Family and friends will say "just don't worry so much, go with the moment" and that is completely worthless to say that to someone like myself. The only time I really don't worry is when I've drank a few beers. Then that little voice in my mind will shut up and I can just "exist". I wonder how many people are alcoholics and/or drug addicts because of this problem. I'm very glad I've never gotten into that but I can see how some would.

So how about you? Are you a worrywart? I haven't even posted this yet and I'm worried someone will think how utterly ridiculous I am for worrying so much, LOL!

Re: Do you worry a lot?

No.

I rarely, rarely worry about things. I'll worry if it's a big deal, and that's about it.

Drives my wife nuts because it makes it seem like I don't care.

It's not that I don't care - I just don't waste my time worrying about things that I can't control or that don't matter.

Re: Do you worry a lot?

Well I wish I could do that but I can't. I will say though that it DEFINITELY has an upside. When I plan on taking a trip or doing something I'm usually the most well prepared person of anyone. You know how you go to a picnic or something and it starts raining and everyone is getting soaked? Not me because my little brain has placed the worry question of "what if it rains??" and I've brought along a little pocket poncho.

So yeah I guess it definitely has it's upside in relation to planning and being prepared but man does it really get mentally tiresome to constantly be thinking worst case and worrying about it. I wish I could just tone it down a little.

Btw - I love the show Obsession and shows about OCD because I believe those folks have a somewhat related affliction, it's just much, much worse for them.

Re: Do you worry a lot?

I do. I'm super paranoid my fiance will find some surfer guy in Australia and run off with him. I'm paranoid that my plane will crash as I head there. I'm actually a small bit afraid that I'm in some kind of elaborate Truman show where instead of being filmed, it's going to end up that everyone has acted in how much they like me and that everyone hates me, and they're all just waiting until the correct moment to pull the rug out from under my feet and then it'll crush my soul.

I need to relax or something.

See for me it's not a big deal because I'll be one who will be like "eh, it's raining. So what?" and continue doing whatever I was doing. I just won't worry about it because there's nothing I can do, so it doesn't really matter.

Re: Do you worry a lot?

Yeah I think what the difference is for us is you'll be like "eh it's raining" and accept that whereas someone like me or THEGIGGAS will be like "why the heck didn't I anticipate this? i could have easily brought a pocket poncho...dangit!!" and really regret what we could have done..

THEGIGGAS - The weird thing is I usually don't worry about like the plane crashing. I worry I guess more about the mundane things like "what if I miss my flight?" or "what if they lose my luggage" and stuff like that.

Btw - Yes I have always struggled with high blood pressure in case anyone wonders.

I really only worry about big things, though, like death or losing someone close to me. Like I worry a lot more about someone breaking into my place instead of whether it's going to rain.

Re: Do you worry a lot?

Oh that's funny you bring that up, I've had a recurring dream of home invasion for I don't know how long. I keep a loaded Glock with hollow points beside my bed but in my dream I go to reach for the gun and one of two things will happen:

1. Someone has replaced my hollow points with nickels. And the nickels obviously aren't going to fire out of the gun and if they do they won't do any damage.

2. I go for the gun and it's completely disassembled. Normally I can assemble it in 30 seconds but in my dream I'm completely clueless as to how it all fits together.

And in the final part of the dream the door bursts open and I'm shot like 83 times, although I wake up right when that happens.

But in general it's the mundane things I worry about. I guess because my brain thinks "well not much you can do about the plane going down" whereas for like my luggage I think "if it's clearly marked with a name and address then it won't get lost". Which is bogus I know, it could still get lost but it's just how I think. I guess it's a control issue because I have some form of control over the mundane stuff but life threatening stuff a lot of times is out of your control for the most part.
