IF.....

if backbreaker could somehow get the nfl liscence of maybe not maybe jus make it easy to customize a schedule and uniforms and players and all things like that AND then make the players look realistic, fine tune some things, and then have a franchise mode with a "super bowl" and stuff.. i think it would be THE best game EVER CREATED.

Those are a lot of IFS..it would be easier for Madden to get physics based tackling and animations then it would be for BB to get a franchise mode, mutliple player models etc.

You think its easier for Madden to add physics based tackling than for Bacbkreaker 2 to add multiple models and a franchise?

If its so easy then what took em?

Re: IF.....

The most difficult part of this premise is acquiring an NFL license. I think it's out of NM's price range, even if it wasn't exclusive.

Re: IF.....

I hope for the best from BB2 (if it actually makes it to market), but BB needs alot more than an NFL license. Frankly, I don't give a crap about NFL license. A few years into franchise, there are new stars in the league anyway. For me, fix the camera, the passing, and add some real meat to the bare bones franchise mode, and ya got something going on.

Exactly. Thats the hard part. It would take some doing.

If it wasn't exclusive, the NFL would want to give the license to as many takers as possible to make the most money. Natural Motion would just work out a deal that involved the NFL getting a certain amount from each copy sold.

Acquiring a NFL license in a non-exclusive environment would probably cost several if not 10s of millions of dollars before royalties, reflecting the value of the video game market.

They're not going to give me access to the NFL to make an XBLA game in my free time. A game bombing is not in their best interest, so it would be cost prohibitive for anyone who isn't empowered to make their game a success from being involved. Letting whomever take a shot at making a game with the intellectual property dilutes it's value. Requiring a significant investment for the license ensures some amount of payoff for the risk, in the event the title is not completed or does poorly.

At a glance many of their licenses are flat payments. Reebok isn't handing over a cut of jersey sales, and Bud Light likely isn't giving up a nickle for every can sold. Instead they're likely just expensive contracts with clauses for required levels of marketing and promotion.

As a result, I think NM should focus on making the best BB the best football game it can be, and not worry about the license stuff, and hope they don't get sued by the NFL for allowing people to recreate their IP in their games.
