My few worries about BB

As you all know i'm pretty hard on Madden most of the time, as I should be. They've been at it a long time now and excuses wear thin.

But as excited as I am about BB, and I will be buying on day 1, there are a few things that i've noticed that definately need attention. I'm talking pure football gameplay alone, not add ons like play creator or coaches and other things that they can add as they move forward. Now...

1) In this video, @ about 1:22 you will see what was 1 of my favorite plays to watch so far. But now that I see it slowed down, I notice a defender try to knock the crap out of someone but no one is there. The ball carrier is already gone. He also hits an invisible brick wall that creates a jarring effect.???

2) On the same play as the ballcarrier goes down one of the defenders jumps over a downed teamate and the guy next to him didn't have to but he jumps over nothing as well. I've noticed this 1-2 times. I'll call this "Twinn Syndrome". In all instances that i've seen this I must say that it has been when the ball carrier was already down and not during the play.

3) Coverage. @ about :37 noticed a reciever catching on the run while the defender stops for a second because the catch was made. Meanwhile the reciever made a great catch, turning his body but never gave the defender a reason to stop. Hopefully this can't be exploited.

Well, that's all i've seen so far. Check these out and give me your take. Here's the link. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yUjeqUHnCJA

Re: My few worries about BB

first off this what i see at the 0:37 mark
the DB that's next to the wr he's runing and plants his feet to turn around to try make a tackle soon as the DB is turn around the ball carry past him up he didnt have time to even try to make a tackle

when you run at full speed u cant just stop on a dim so to me this shows real football realstic when u run full speed u need to plant and trun around fast as you can but no way its going be 1 sec

This could be true. I'm just saying that I hope you can't get away with that on offense all day.

All valid points. I agree that there is a problem.

You're also probably going to get a lot of responses from various users that will say this is a trailer you really don't need to be too concerned about because the footage is a from a much earlier build. Evidence #1 for an earlier build: defenders are attempting flying tackles. Flying tackles are no longer prevalent in more recent builds.

Point 1 can go either way. Point 2 is concerning with respect to physics.

My main concern would be Point #3. Two components that are related to each other must be factored in this play:
  • Short Version
    • Good - Physics and human kinetics are actually respected.
    • Bad - Poor coverage technique (my main concern).

  • Longer Version
    • Good – Physics is respected. DB's hesitation is due to physics and human kinetics being respected with respect to player position. Player turns around, momentum causes the DB to appears as though he stops for no reason. Physics is respected due to player behavior.
    • Bad - Poor coverage technique - The DB has mental psychic abilities. One key unfortunate element that must be taken into consideration is that the DB has his back completely turned to the WR. The DB never really keeps watch on the WR at all until the last minute.
      • @0:35 - 0:39 [0:37]. (full screen; left side; DB with black jersey; 45 yard line). The DB is not looking at the WR at all before or during the pass; the DB is looking at the endzone. The DB magically becomes aware of the WR position immediately before the WR catches the ball--for some unknown reason, despite the DB having his back to the WR, and DB eyes looking towards the endzone, the DB knows when to turn around. DB-psychic abilities at work, unfortunately.
      • @0:55 - 0:59. (full screen; endzone; DB with black jersey). Another DB psychic ability sequence can be noted here. The DB/Safety in the endzone looks at the crowded seats without having awareness for his assigned WR nor the ball. DB psychic ability kicks in. DB raises arms for whatever reason despite keeping his eye on the crowded seats.
      • @1:44 - 1:45. (split screen; lower screen; bottom lower left side). White Jersey DB runs upfield looks towards the crowded seats, and is not looking at a WR. DB-psychic ability kicks in.

My main concerns: OL/DL interactions, WR/DB interactions, Elusive vs. Power RBs, varieties, etc.
But what's more concerning with respect to all public domain footage falls on the OL/DL line play, DB/WR interactions, off-ball interactions. One thing in particular, I have yet to see DE rush the arc properly.
    • Where are my Jared Allen’s, Reggie White’s, Lawrence Taylor’s, Dwight Freeney’s?
    • Where are my shut down corners, Deion Sanders, etc.?

Watch APF2k8's animation for these position specific animations to get an idea that proper individual interactions have been nicely captured in a video game. Better yet, Natural Motion should have attempted to fully mimic one on one interactions found in real live football footage.

Here's hoping BB2's on the field gameplay and individual football techniques will be more impressive. Here's hoping BB1 sales will allow BB2 to move forward. BB2 will either need to add better programmers and animators to the team or better, more authentic motion captures.

Here's hoping BB1 sales will allow BB2 to move forward and become reality. BB1 looks to be a relatively strong foundation for something truly special.

Re: My few worries about BB

Wow, how so many of you analyze every second of footage amazes me , not only with this game but with madden as well. I watch these same videos and all I see is a beautiful looking football game, something new and fresh.
My only concern is the game doesn't come out for another 18 days. I can't wait.

Re: My few worries about BB

My main concern is defense, defense, defense. I pride myself on having lock down defenses, and I just have a feeling it isn't going to be very effective in BB and it's gonna be hard as **** to get the hang of, not being able to see the whole field. With you as a single player, you're not gonna see a receiver coming wide open in a slant in zone coverage, and you can't take a DB over to cover this hole in the difference, or atleast get a head start towards this receiver to tackle him soon after he catches the pass. IDK, maybe it's just me, but defense is my only concern. Everything else looks gorgeous.

in my opinion this game on D is gonna be just like playing SStar mode on madden/ncaa with a defensive player. yes it takes a lil time to get used to it, but after a few games, itll all make sense. i wish it was just like madden on reg games where ur on top and going down, but its not like i havent had that SStar experience. the camera will tilt and pan around slightly so im not worried at all. im gonna pick my guy and stick with him just like SStar so i wont be switching around all day. ill stick to my assignment and do the best job i can at my position for that play.

if u havent done this....play a season of SStar mode on madden/ncaa to get some practice in with playing D from this perspective.
